Quizno’s Away

As in far away. Is anyone else besides me put off by this horrid travesty? Who the heck sold them on this? It will get them publicity, I am sure, but I am also sure it will cost them customers too. I am not going to eat there, and in fact I find the commercials so bad on so many levels that I change the channel as soon as I see it start. Note to programmers, I don’t always go back to that show either.

UPDATE: This entry has generated more comments than any other post I've done. So much so, that I have done another post on advertising with reference to to the ads. Enjoy. LW

I completely agree!! Being in the marketing/advertising fields, I cannot fathom how Quizno's bought off on this campaign. Whoever sold it to them must be one heck of a seller. I find the little rat/flea creatures a total turn-off to what is otherwise a decent product. What are they supposed to be, anyway? And their disgusting teeth! Are we to assume their teeth got this way from eating Quizno's subs? The little song they sing is painful to listen to, and I can't really even understand what all they're saying. Shame on Quizno's - what a horrible way to waste their money...and lose business in the process.

Quiznos is quickly becoming the second coming of Burger King when it comes to advertising. Their ads campaigns continue to be insulting and off-putting, and each is worse than the one before.

Posted by: Ted at February 3, 2004 04:29 PM

Are you f*ing kidding? Their commercials are genius! Look, you are talking about them! Wxactly what they want you to do. They create a buzz, regardless of what they are. The campaign is hilarious. Those creatures rule!

Posted by: Big D at February 5, 2004 06:18 PM

Never seen the adverts you're talking about. Of course, I've never been to a Quiznos either :)

The new McDonald's campaign is still at the top of my most hated.

Posted by: Ith at February 5, 2004 07:52 PM

I LOVE the little quizno's commercial creatures. I think they are so funny, and everytime that commercial comes on I can't help but crack up laughing so hard that my stomach and face hurts. Call me stupid, but I think those commercials are great. I've never eaten at a Quizno's before, but because of the hillarious commercials, maybe I'll start! I hope those creatures become like the taco bell dog, with stuffed animals and other marketing approaches. I love it!

Posted by: Brittany at February 5, 2004 10:31 PM

Not only do the quizno's creatures continue to grow on me, but I've become so enamoured with them at this point that I would buy a feature length album of just them singing.

Posted by: Derek at February 5, 2004 11:20 PM

Where have all of you been. These creatures are not the product of marketing guru's at Quizno's. These furry, bug eyed creatures from another world are just that, from another world. the world of the internet to be exact. They hail from a popular web site that spoofs pop songs and music videos. "We love the Subs!" was originally "We love the Moon!" (There suppose to be Moon creatures). The site was first brought to my attention by my daughter nearly two years ago. I thought the creatures were histerical and I hope the original artist do get some tpye of payday in reguards to the use of their novel charectors.

Posted by: Allan L. at February 5, 2004 11:49 PM

The Quiznos' creatures are the best. My little 8-year-old brother saw this commercial and now can't stop singing that jingle. He wants to go eat at Quiznos and see if they have a kids meal featuring them. He calls them "Krunchies" (don't ask me why). Good job, Quiznos, on finally getting some humor going on in your advertisements.

Posted by: Carlos V. at February 6, 2004 03:33 PM

They're from www.rathergood.com

They're called the spongemonkeys. It's been an internet "cult classic" for a couple of years now.

I give a serious thumbs up to the brand manager who gave that c.ampaign the OK. After all, Quiznos is saying "Buck the norm".

Posted by: cathleen at February 6, 2004 05:33 PM

I think that it was genius of them to use the Spongemonkeys for the ads. It is both very funny and really gets your attention. You won't soon forget that Quizno's commercial after seeing the Spongemonkeys ads. Oh, if you want to see how the Spongemonkeys got started, go here --> http://www.rathergood.com/moon_song/

Posted by: Mark at February 6, 2004 07:26 PM

These "creatures" may be cool on the Internet, but I find them extremely unappetizing--they make me think of deformed rats. It certainly doesn't make me want to visit quiznos and I think the campaign will backfire.

Posted by: ellie at February 7, 2004 04:36 PM

Wow, this post has generated some interesting comments. I'd like to respectfully respond to Big D who stated that the commercials are serving their purpose in that they're creating a buzz, that we're talking about them. Well, you do have a point in that yes, we are talking about them. But the real purpose of advertising is to sell the product. In the words of the late, great David Ogilvy, ads should be so "interesting that you buy the product."

Another point I'd like to make is that I consider myself web savvy and I've never run across the website that was cited with the creation of these "creatures," and I feel that Joe Q. Public will have never heard of it either. It seems to me that those who have are not of an age that has purchasing power...but I could very well be wrong on this and may have misunderstood the previous comments.

Posted by: Stacy at February 7, 2004 06:54 PM

I think the commercials are great... They are something crazy and random in an otherwise boring, some old same old commercial world. I also like the coupon generator on www.quiznos.com site. They make up for the "total turn-off to what is otherwise a decent product" by giving you a "buck off" for bringing in ANY coupon... now thats marketing... the don't even have to print any stinkin coupons. That's genious.

Posted by: Brian Blackmore at February 9, 2004 03:47 PM

Respecfully in response to Stacy, I do see your point but couldn't disagree more. The more and more people I talk to say that they have visited Quizno's a couple of times because of seeing the commercials. Most of which it has been the first time they have ever been there. I must also state that the majority of them have been in their early 20's to late 30's. I would say that if the commercial did target a younger age that the parents would end up spending their money at Quizno's after the childs request to visit that resturant after seeing the commercials. That's all Quizno's needs is to get you in the store once so that you can taste the food and you will be back for another visit.

All in all I think we are all reading way to much into this commercial. It does what it is supposed to do, which is get the name Quizno's in your head and not let you forget it. So when it comes time for you to decide what to eat, you think Quizno's. It is not meant for anything more so just try to loosen up and enjoy a truly different commercial, instead of the usual boring same as everyone else commercials that I for one usually leave the room for until what I was watching comes back on.

Posted by: Mark at February 9, 2004 06:19 PM

Actually, if you don't get these commercials, you probably aren't the target. According to someone I know who works at this ad agency, these ads are purely targeted to the bread 'n butter of all fast feeders: Males 18-24. Inside that, they are targeting an irreverent mindset rather than the mainstream. Using an obscure device like the spongmonkeys taps into these guys subversive tendencies. However, spongmonkeys going mainstream is a danger as they could loose their credibility with this group. But once buzz and affinity is set with this particular group, it will bubble up to the masses.

Posted by: Michelle at February 9, 2004 11:05 PM

The spongemonkies are a fad and they are making Q's a fad. Business built on the back of promotional gimicks will dissassociate the customer's memory from the product. Unfortunately, they are indicative of society, that we have short attention spans and react to oddities. Look at all the past performers who were 'shocking' only to be outdone tomorrow. No one wants to ride fame to the bottom, but always do. Some think any publicity is good. I.E. why do you think these 'monkeys' haven't become well known? Q's uses them for flash-bang effect as Michelle points out. But the 'monkeys' proved they are a dying breed, since they have existed for two years and are fruitless. Oh, o.k. the are usefull...as a 'lure'. Ride that ball-o-flames and go out with a bang!

Posted by: Justin at February 10, 2004 02:51 AM

Well, all I can say is I have never been to Subway's, McDonald's, Burger King's, or any other fast food website, but couldn't wait to visit Quiznos.com to see more of those ads. What's more fun, is now I want to go to Quizno's with the most bizzar, shocking coupon I can find and see the reaction from the employees! I have never eaten at Q's before, but I am sure going to try it now.
Wow, looks like their ad campaign does work...

Posted by: James at February 10, 2004 04:47 AM

they look like pieces of turd...the heads at quizons are on acid man, yeah :D

Posted by: stoney at February 12, 2004 07:06 AM

An absolutely brilliant ad campaign in my view. I'm way past the age demographic Quizno's is shooting for, but I find the commercials hysterical. The spongmonkeys are so out-of-the-norm, that you can't help but remember them, regardless of how "appetizing" you find them, or the overall theme of the ad.

And the jingle is strangely appealing. It's SO horrible that it kind of generates its own aura, and slowly grows on you like a fungus. I can honestly say that this is the ONLY time I've EVER sought out more information about a TV ad on the web, and was delighted to find the origination of this wacky duo (www.rathergood.com) yesterday. If Quizno's goal was to get people talking about their ads by the watercooler, I'd say they succeeded. I haven't laughed so hard at a TV spot since the days of Joe Sedelmaier 's campaigns (Where's the Beef, Barkolounger guy, etc.)

A truly unique and entertaining commercial in an era of endless yawners and tired old formulas that always leave you asking, "what was that ad for?"

Hey Quizno's -- get one hot for me!

Posted by: DwayneinMaine at February 12, 2004 12:48 PM

I actually threw up a little in my mouth the first time I saw that commercial.
Has anyone heard the radio spots? When I think about ordering a sub, body hair is the last thing I want on my mind.

Posted by: Melissa at February 12, 2004 03:47 PM

Ugh. I was so happy when a Quizno's opened in my neighbourhood---for a good while I was a repeat visitor. But this commercial has forever changed that. Those things look like something dead, and seeing something dead doesn't pique my appetite for their subs. I can't even stomach looking at them long enough to let their 'quirkiness' take hold. It's really the only commercial I've ever seen that repulsed me. And to have it be for a sub shop just makes it that much worse. Yuck.

Posted by: Davien at February 12, 2004 04:18 PM

dude and dudets, the quiznos commerial was crucial

Posted by: charlie at February 12, 2004 06:44 PM

LOL...well, whatever we think of them, the commercials are working. I've had the song stuck in my head all day, and was interested enough in whatever those bizzarre creatures are that I did a google search to find out more, and found you all here posting about them. I have to agree with Big D, DwayneinMaine, James and the rest who think they're a stroke of genius. I've never been to a Quizno's, but I'm planning to go as soon as I find the perfect wierd coupon LOL

Posted by: Lynn at February 12, 2004 06:59 PM

I just can't get past the whole rat thing. I keep seeing a rat tail or hair on my sub. I definitely hear the "buzz" around the office about the commercial. It seems to be 70% find the commercial "just wrong" to 30% who love it.

Posted by: Tim at February 12, 2004 07:52 PM

LOL...I fall somewhere in between. It IS "just wrong", but wierdly compelling just the same... And it's growing on me. Then again I have a strange sense of humor. My boyfriend HATES those commercials!

Posted by: Lynn at February 12, 2004 08:03 PM

Personally it doesn't matter what I think of the commercials. The fact is that people are talking about them. I'd tend to agree that any press is good press in most feilds however I disagree when it comes to food. Quizno's has associated their product with diseased-looking animals. In a time of mad cow disease and the chicken flu the last thing a company wants do do is make a clear link between their product and diseased animals. I believe that the execs at Subway are laughing all the way to the bank.

Posted by: Pauly at February 12, 2004 10:14 PM

If you hate the commercials hate... by all means continue to hate. They were never meant for you in the first place. But I find it very odd that there are so many of you that "hate" the commercial so much that you would go to a site and complain about them. The commercials are working because EVERYBODY is talking about quizno's.

Quizno's is the little guy in the fast food industry, and if Quizno's ever wants to become one of the big boys they need to take some risks. This risk may be uncalculated but it sure seems to have everyone talking.

Everyone also seems to forget about what the ads actually do say they are pointing out the differences that Quiznos has from the other ordinary sub shops.

'We love the subs! Because they are good to us.
The Quiznos subs.
They are tasty. They are crunchy. They are warm because they toast them.
They got a pepper bar'

That says it all... The ads are designed to make you curious enough to go in. See that there are no dead rats and enjoy a truely great warm toasty crunch sandwich.

Bravo Quiznos for breaking through all the other mindless clutter and stepping up to the plate and imo hitting a grand slam.

Posted by: Nate at February 13, 2004 01:54 AM

"Mindless clutter?" sounds more like you should be referring to this commercial. I'm in the target demographic, and when I saw those two dead rats jumping all over pictures of subs, and singing that god awful song, I wanted to go down to my local Quizno's (which I eat at quite often) and lay into the manager.

Yeah it created a buzz. However, everytime I think about Quizno's now I see those damned rats, with their twisted eyeballs. That's not exactly appetizing. I think I'll start buying salads for lunch.

Posted by: Mike at February 13, 2004 03:35 AM

Perhaps people are talking about the ads, but when I use to think of Quizno's I could smell the fresh hot bread, the taste of the meats, cheeses and veggies on the sandwiches.

However, now when I see a Quizno's, I think of Rat meat. Dirty, hairy dead rodents. If that is the image Quizno's is seeking, so be it! They have achieved it. I no longer have the desire to eat at Quizno's.

On another note, my 11 year old daughter use to love Quizno's, but the other day when I mentioned it to her and several of her friends they all started going ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! And holding their noses as if a horrible stench was in the air. Turns out amongst the kids at her school, laughing at the Quizno's ads is considered coool!

Good shot Quizno's! You've scored a direct hit amidship with this advertising blunder.

Posted by: Borg at February 13, 2004 04:10 AM

Visited two Quizno's after they opened in our area. They seem to be quite prolific in opening franchises - both experiences were terrible beyond belief. Sorry to say that the content and quality of the product caused me to wonder just how far processed food can go before consumers refuse to purchase it.

The analogy between my consumer experience and the unrecognizeable being in their advertising was too striking and cemented a view in this consumers mind that this is a really entertaining place to watch commercial content from, but a terrible place to eat.

Posted by: Steve at February 13, 2004 04:25 AM

that commercial fucking ROCKED!!! i laugh my ass off every time i see it. it totally conviced me to buy a sub there. my thinking is, if they r that cool to put out a campain like that, they got good subs!! : )

Posted by: dodo at February 13, 2004 04:52 AM

An important point to "Advertising-101" is that product/client visibility is 75% of the battle... If the product winds up selling better because of a particular campaign, ANY response is better than no response. This campaign may prove that it has not inspired substantial, profitable margins for Quizno's - it is a success, regardless as it has sparked interest that will (very likely) make the viewer take particular note in subsequent ads from Quizno's independent of the methodology. Keep in mind, we are the dolts that took the time to search out this site and speak to our thoughts on it; proof-positive that the campaign has succeeded.

Posted by: dmfett at February 13, 2004 06:37 AM

For the Madison Avenue three-piece suit crowd, with wingtips, the SpongeMonkey ad is non-conformist and revolting.

For those of us who live a little more on the edge, a sandwich shop's advertizing doesn't have to limit itself to computer-enhanced, glossy photos of salami on a French roll, with PERFECT dew-covered lettuce and tomatoes. This is how everybody else advertizes their subs.

Right on for Quizno's and RatherGood.com How refreshing to see a daring gambit, instead of the same old gray mare.

Posted by: TheGriz at February 13, 2004 07:04 AM

These are the most awesome commercials ever. I've never been to Quizno's, but I'm going now! Does anyone know where I could download these commercials online. I know you can watch them at the Quizno's website, but it comes up in a flash window so you can't download it. I must get a permanent copy so I can watch them until the end of time!

Posted by: Andy K at February 13, 2004 08:49 PM

These commercials are hilarious! They surely get everyone talking about Quizno's. I too searched it out on the internet, I still need to find out what animals those are based on, it's not a rat I know that.

All you people who now associate Quizno's with rats? Thats just sad, your mind is so gullible that you learn to associate the food with rats? To instantly equate a rat (which those are NOT) and food is laughable, and all commercials probably have way too much impact on you.

A memorable ad + a clever coupon deal = many more customers

Posted by: Dave at February 13, 2004 11:56 PM

Otayyy... after visiting Rathergood and watching "We like the Moon", I no longer have any interest in ever eating at a Quiznos. Or in seeing the commercial that has everyone buzzing.

Heh heh heh: kewl - they managed to jump the shark with it before I've even seen the ads. Now that's talent. ;]

Posted by: Ironbear at February 14, 2004 03:32 AM

The commercial is awesome, I don't care if you think of dead rats or whatever--it's perfect. The first time I saw it, my boyfriend and I were like..."What the hell is this?!?!" and started laughing hysterically. [Snarky, self-serving ad hominem deleted. I love that commercial and think it's great that they chose the spongemonkeys as their "mascots" or whatever.

Really, what would you rather have, something odd and subversive, or some boring guy that lost a hundred pounds eating sandwiches?

I'll never eat anywhere other than Quizno's anymore.

Posted by: Bill Chance at February 14, 2004 05:00 AM

I found the commercial hilarious. If anyone wants the commercial, just use your favorite file-sharing application such as Limewire and do a search. Found & got both of them this way.

Posted by: Carl Gunderman at February 14, 2004 12:32 PM

Wow!!! I have to say that I really enjoy the commercials. I think that it was a genious move to incorporate the spongemonkeys into the Quizno's ad campaign. Mostly the people who don't like the commercials are middle-aged people who have children that love the commercials. Who cares, at that point, whether middle-agers like it anyway? Their children's money, or even their own money, via their children, will buy Quizno's subs!!! Genious!! Violent video game manufacturers, and toy companies have been using this same philosophy for years. Genious!!!!

Posted by: Chris Weeks at February 16, 2004 05:54 AM

Hmm...I wonder how a spongemonkey sub would taste anyhow? These commercials are beginning to create week's buzz. I wonder if they pulled out a breast (last week's big news) if they'd be popular too? Just remember, spongemonkeys need love too. Quizno's subs aren't in question, just their ad campaign. I have a friend named Marcie that thinks "midgets" (her word, not mine) are hillarious...all 3feet 10inches of her. If you don't like the campaign, does that mean you don't like the subs? Maybe, but it certainly means you are as easily manipulated as silly putty...desired result acheived. Congrats, Quizno's

Posted by: RoiDuSoleil at February 16, 2004 07:17 AM

The spongemonkeys are a little disgusting I must admit. But the song is what stayed in my head. I was with my friends (who are probably in the 16-20 something target age group) when one of them broke into "we love the subs" commercial jingle. So the five of us went to Q's and I loved the subs. In other words, the commercial served it's purpose and got people to Q's. It reminds me of that Dairy Queen commercial with the dudes making those noises. It was a hit for awhile and even though it got annoying, it customers.

Posted by: anna peoples at February 16, 2004 09:13 PM

I want to download that song from their new commercial lol!! I think its cute even though I don't like subs period. My friends and I think its hilarious

Posted by: Michaela at February 17, 2004 03:51 AM

At first it was like watching a car wreck, but I have to say I stop and watch everytime these spots air. I think they are incredibly effective and pretty funny. Having been in marketing forever, they certainly meet the highest objective "Love me, hate me, but don't ignore me."

Posted by: Scott at February 17, 2004 03:19 PM

Love It. Sooooo Funny! everytime!~

Posted by: Carey Best at February 17, 2004 03:40 PM

I saw the commercial and quite frankly it disgusted me.. And they look like dead rats because there feet are all curled like dead rats and it made me not want to eat.. It is probably a good idea if you don't advertise food with dead disgusting animals.. I like quiznos and the crunchy bread and they coupon thing is good. but then you talk about hair plugs in the commercial!!! That is a little repulsive.
Try to come up with something to attract an audience not disgust them..
