Doing Good

I have written before about the need to do good, but do it constructively. More than ever, I think the lessons there must be considered, for fate is placing a lot of need our way.

The weather alone is doing damage, from ravaging the Caribbean to devastation in Florida and elsewhere. We have unique opportunities to help fight an important part of the war by giving to Operation Give and Operation ShoeFly among others. We can directly help our troops in a variety of ways, from Hook-A-Thon to Soldier’s Angels to Adopt A Sniper to Beer For Soldiers. We can help those in need here in the U.S. by giving to organizations ranging from the Mennonite Disaster Services to Strengthen The Good.

Also, look into helping individual bloggers. If you know of good jobs, contact Tammi, DaGoddess, or Kathy. Heck, I’m under employed and could use some work too. If you can make a donation, DaGoddess, The Delightful Ith, and Kathy would all appreciate a hit to their tip jars. To be honest, there are a lot more out there who need help, some who have no Amazon button and some who do. Choose wisely and do what you can.

For we can all do a good bit. I know someone who is in desperate straights, having been screwed over royally on paychecks and told flat out that they will not get the money they are owed. Too bad, so sad. Yet, this person still has given to those in need, and continues to do so. What are you willing to do? Can you live up to the challenge this person places before us all?

Choosing wisely is the heart of today’s food for thought: Think about what you can do, and do it wisely. It is not enough to donate to something that says it will do good, for what you must do is take the time to find out how much goes where, and where that where really is. Are you helping those in need? Or, just perpetuating a bad situation and making it worse. Can you live without fancy coffee for a week to help those in need? Choose wisely. Go back, read the post, and think.

Then do. And do what is right and best for everyone, including yourself.

Don’t just give a hand-out, for that is a cheap cop-out. Give a hand-up. Do some real good in the world. We will all be the better for it.
