May 10, 2005Lawn Mower QuestionIf someone was needing to get a lawn mower and had a quarter acre or so of regular lawn, and a quarter acre plus of fairly deep grass to cut, what would you recommend for them? Would you go with a plain mower, a mulching mower, a bag mower, or what? Given the size of the lot, a push mower (a la the Coyote Blender) is not an option for more than just the first area, IMO. See, Evil Glenn is not the only one who can do mower blogging... BTW, no reason I ask, no reason what-so-ever. LW Posted by wolf1 at May 10, 2005 11:20 AM | TrackBackComments If the mower-operator intends to keep that second patch short thereafter, go for the right one for a half-acre. Getting that 2nd half under control the first time round, just do rows about a third of the width, or less, of the full-cut width.....tedious and hard, but the best way to set the grass for the rest of the season....... Posted by: MommaBear at May 10, 2005 12:28 PMI would definitely get one with wheels? Just a suggestion, but I like them to have wheels. BORK! Posted by: zammers at May 10, 2005 01:16 PMI like mulchers but you have to keep the grass cut down to really use them. Posted by: vw bug at May 10, 2005 03:00 PMI used to use a bag mower, but given the amount of clippings I would have a huge mulch pile in no time. Thought of just a plain, but hate the clumps and dissarray they can cause. The mulching sounds good, but have never used one and that lawn may not be able to be cut short. Whatever is obtained, however, will have wheels. :) Posted by: Laughing Wolf at May 10, 2005 08:07 PMI would get a mulching mower if you don't want to be trying to dispose of a huge amount of grass clippings. For the long part of the lawn... start out with the mower on the highest setting possible (make sure the grass is NOT wet) cut once on the highest setting and work your way down until you're at the same height as the rest of the grass. We have a mulching mower that can also be used with a bag. (yes it's a push mower - we have about 1/3 acre total ground which includes the house). If you can find such a mower. The first time you mow the long grass - bag it. When you get things evened out. Revert to the mulching mower for the rest of the mowing. Good luck! Unfortunately The Wife won't let me do this here at home. Posted by: Graumagus at May 11, 2005 03:52 AMI have a Murray self-propelled mulcher with a 6-horse Briggs&Stratton. After sitting on the porch unused for almost 6 months, I put in oil and gas and it fired up on the first pull. Gotta love that. Plus it goes through wet grass like it was nothing. Post a comment
