February 24, 2006The Odd Things One LearnsWhilst under the weather. Kosher salt, sprinkled into ginger ale, foams up just like Alka Seltzer. LW Comments Greetings! Just strolled along and thought I might as well say hello :-) Kosher salt in ginger ale... yay, applied chemistry! Should work with any salt though, not only kosher NaCl :-) I think the solubility product is accountable for the effect. Since H2CO3 has a low solubility (unstable like hell), and NaCl dissolves a lot better, the salt dissolves in the water and swamps out the carbonic acid and your ale foams up from all the CO2. These are my two smartass cents, if that makes sense ;-) Posted by: Oliver at February 24, 2006 09:37 PMOh no. I hope that you are feeling better soon! Posted by: Richmond at February 24, 2006 10:55 PMmy 2 cents... sounds like it would taste like crappola... Posted by: armywifetoddlermom at February 25, 2006 09:23 PMHi Oliver, apprecate the comments and had sort of been thinking that way on the chemistry. Richmond, thanks for the kind words. AWTM, it actually is not bad. It is an anti-nausea trick I was told that I am glad to say that it works. You don't put in a lot, just a little bit. May be one of the reasons that saltines work so well. Posted by: Laughing Wolf at February 25, 2006 10:56 PMPost a comment
