Crowton Case Update

A while back, I posted this piece about another wonderful case of Child Abductive Services in operation up in Michigan. Yes, there were some problems but they had been dealt with, namely the father had a drug problem as a result of being hit by a car. When they contacted the state for help, what they got was a nightmare. If you did not do so before, go check out the particulars. If you are not enraged, you are probably beyond help.

Harry Potter

Okay, I have read the book and I loved it. There were two points that came up that deserve some attention, though they should not be spoilers. Both are philosophical points. One brought laughter, the other some concern and thought. Today, I am going to take on the fun one, based on a comment made by Harry. Even if it may draw down the wrath of Ith and others. :)

Australia's New Foreign Policy

I got this story from several sites, so am not sure who should really get the hat tip on this one. Go read it, and as for me I am going to rejoice. I think it a step in the right direction, in terms of the right of self defense. Lots of totalitarians of one stripe or another hate that right, so seeing advanced in any form is a good sign in my book.

Some Excellent Thoughts On Affirmative Action

There is, of course, a great deal being said out there pro and con, but this letter published at the Volokh Conspiracy calls out the racism behind both Affirmative Action, and those who are defending it so viciously. Go read it, read the post it references, and then go think a bit. Some of those thoughts are a bit uncomfortable, aren’t they. Good.

Do Not Call

The national Do Not Call site is now open for business and the initial overloads dealt with. I have registered and it was fairly quick and painless. While the calls may not stop for some time now, it is a start. Now, we just need to deal with the spammers and I am beginning to think that an open hunting season on them is the best way to do it. Thin the herds, don't you know.

Special Burgers

When I don’t grind my own meat, I usually get the extra-lean ground meat. The only problem with this stuff is that it does not have enough fat to cook properly, allowing things to get dry and tough. A good way around it is to do something like the following.

Easy Pulled Pork

I just realized that I forgot to put up a recipe last week, so will do two today. Given that the Fourth is upon us, I will start with easy pulled pork.

The key to this one is my thrifty nature: I got the cut of pork shoulder that is very inexpensive because most people don’t like all the trimming required. My way, you don’t need to worry about that. :) Don’t trim, don’t do a thing to it.

For The Fourth: Best Food

5{s doesn’t get some controversy going, nothing will. :) With the Fourth coming up fast, I though I would list what I consider to be the best in some traditional food. Note that I am a snob/purist and don’t consider anything just thrown on a grill as BBQ, for that requires real wood, slow cooking, and a few other things. Without futher ado, allow me to present:

An Easier Way

The improving journalism posts were of sufficient quantity (quality to be judged later) that I have tried to make it easier for people to get to them. I tried some code I was given but am not sure that worked, so I also did it "the old fashioned way" and put next buttons at the bottom of each. If you start here with the first one, you can now go directly to the next article in the series. Hope this helps with wading through them.

Music Review: Loreena McKinnett

Okay, now she is another over there on the right, down in the music section. She is there for a reason, and it is a good one.

I first had her brought to my attention by a friend, who knew of my love for Celtic music, or music influenced by Celt. That introduction led me to a wonderful song called “All Souls Night” and from there on I was hooked.

A Cheerful Thought For A Saturday

For the first time in far too long a time, I got out on a Friday night. This was a special occasion in that I joined up with some friends and went out to watch a former co-worker put it all on the line. Not a typical feat of macho daring, but much harder in my book because it risks putting your mind, soul, and ego out for play. He is doing improv with a group, and that is truly taking a risk.

Go Support Lileks

Meant to do this yesterday, but was still dragging. Even if you meant to put it in my tip jar, go put a couple of dollars in his instead. My pledge drive will wait a while, and it is a way to send a good message.

I was not alone in thinking that someone had attacked The Bleat, but instead the problem was what happened to his wife. Lileks is one of the best of the best, and even a couple of dollars will show support during a trying time.

Sarah’s Saga Continues

It is with an odd mixture of sadness and elation that I sit down to write this post. There is pride and joy in reporting that Sarah Saga has indeed returned to the United States. The country from which she was kidnapped, and bound over to an existence which few can imagine. One of abuse, forced marriage, and rape; yet, she never lost hope and somehow and someway the spark of courage stayed lit and burst into flame as soon as it could.

Well, that is how the cat looks at it at any rate. One of my neighbors has an indoor/outdoor cat that I have always referred to as Tigersocks. Nice enough cat, has talked to me a time or two, and has cut down on the mouse, and bird, population around the apartments. Love the former, am less than thrilled most days at the latter.

Food Safety Alert

Please bear with me while I get back on track. Also, allow me to share a rule of food that one breaks at one’s own peril – as I have been reminded.

With so much meat preparation being done elsewhere and shipped in to stores, it is wise to cook any ground meat you buy the day you get it. Waiting even a couple of days can become chancy. I was lucky, I pushed and things were not too bad, but it has knocked me back a bit more than I thought it had/would. So, be safe and be patient.

Sarah Saga: Saudi Prisoner?

The case of Sarah Saga, the U.S. Citizen holed up in a consulate in Saudi Arabia raises many things. It is clearly an emotional case, not only for her and her mother, but for the average American as well. It raises questions on several legal fronts, from the citizenship of her children to her rights and right of protection as a citizen. It also raises yet more concern about the Department of State and its actions. It also strongly calls into question the veracity of our gallant allies the House of Sand, er, Saud.

    Enough Is Enough

Fights go on all the time, and the net has been a place of flames and worse for some time. The better blogs have steered clear of it, and watching some of what I have seen is enough to make me reconsider the use of comments on posts, save that I want to encourage rational debate.

For now, I have to blog pseudo-anonymously because of potential contractual (i.e. job) problems, so I very much identify with a despicable act that has been committed by a troll. While I will in no way, shape, or form discuss or take sides on what led up to it, someone has lost a job over this bullshit. The way it was done was despicable, cowardly, and a few things worse than that. Whomever did it has no honor, is beneath contempt, and needs to be rooted out. Go check out Jim Treacher and the good JimK at Right Thoughts for information and background.

If you do have any knowledge about this matter, get it to Veronica ASAP. No matter what went on before or who was right and who was wrong, this crosses a line and makes it hunting season. The person who did this, and any who hide them or aid them, need to be exposed and dealt with by all means legal and by being shunned by those with honor.

    Affirmative Action

The Supreme Court has spoken, and despite the various spins it is clear that Affirmative Action has taken a blow. Not, perhaps, the final blow it should have taken, but a serious wound none-the-less.

The reasons for the start of such programs created a mythos in this country that has since been used to justify racism of the worst stripe, and to totally ignore the Constitution and much more. Whatever it was in the beginning, it has since turned into something that deserves a quick and merciful end.

    Saving Pvt. Journalism, Pt. 9

  • Part 9
One of the largest keys to saving journalism will be simple to identify, but difficult to make happen: Lose the attitude.

Yes, what passes for news in The Media comes with loads of attitude. There is the open anti-American attitude that is so prevalent in the New York Times, the BBC, and a host of other outlets. There is the less obvious, but no less prevalent, attitude of holier than though that comes from many in the profession. You see, they are the anointed ones to enlighten the masses, to guide them as betters should guide social and mental inferiors, the bearer of higher standards to which mere mortals (and bloggers) can not possible understand, much less aspire to. Like the Anointed One in Buffy, they forget that the inevitable name for such quickly becomes the annoying ones. There is also a cultural attitude of “we don’t make mistakes” that goes hand in hand with the-end-justifies-the-means approach towards biased news coverage.

A Wonderful Day In The Life…

Once again, I am going to try my hand at something more literary, but hopefully with more substance than simply a “look at me” type of posting. Indeed, I find myself to be quite fortunate, and not simply because the doctors were wrong when they said I would never grown up, and never be much if I did. Rather, I see it more in terms of what Gen. Doolittle said of himself, “I could never be so lucky again.”

The day started with an ache and a pain, as somewhere around 0530 my shoulders, body overall, light, and birds that were too bloody cheerful to see the sun combined to bring me up to the brinks of consciousness. I knew I was pushing at the gym this week, and I really felt it yesterday to the point that I went for a massage. Fair massage, but not as good as I had hoped for – thought I did not hurt as bad as I expected to this morning. Eight hours sleep was not enough, but I gave up about 0545 and began to get up.

    Saving Pvt. Journalism, Pt. 7

@ just realized that I forgot to post the discussion on how most media outlets operate, and to contrast it with other types of communications. So, I am going to do an abbreviated version and then jump into today’s suggestions and commentary.

First, all traditional outlets have the concept of deadlines. This is because the presses were only run once a day if possible, to cut costs, and in broadcasting because radio picked a set time for large-scale news that carried over into TV. How a story gets selected is simple: it is either a breaking news story that is big (fire, robbery, murder, etc.) or is a story that was most likely assigned to a reporter. Reporters can and do come up with their own stories, but they must be approved by, and other assignments come from, an editor. This editor then says have this story ready by XXX and the reporter hops to it. They research, talk to sources, write up/produce the story, and it goes into the hopper and out into print or broadcast. Review is often cursory by an editor or senior producer, and the copy desk (where a lot of fun and interesting mistakes can and do occur).

Well, someone is trying something like the Pay Pal scam letter, but this time with Best Buy as the alleged source of the e-mail. Just got off the phone with Best Buy, and they are aware of it and trying to deal with it. So don't fall for it.

Be very careful when you get something like this. Check it out with a local store, or call the toll-free or other customer service number for the company and verify it with them. Most companies do not and will not request personal information via e-mail or the Web.

We Still Have A Constitution Zone

An Open Letter To Senator "Boobie" Hatch and other like-minded congresscritters:

First, I would remind you of your sworn oaths to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. You pledged yourself to that task, yet it is painfully clear from your comments and follow-on comments that you either have not read that document or clearly do not understand it. Please re-read and re-consider, particularly those sections relating to due process, rights of search and seizeure, and the restrictions on the Government in regards those and other interesting concepts.

Second, I would suggest you clean up your own act since according to this your own WWW site is in violation of copyright. I seem to recall some biblical phraseology about sins and stones with which you should refresh yourself.

Third, if you do not understand the Constitution you swore to uphold and defend, or find that you are no longer willing to do so, you should step down. If you fail to do so, it is my sincere hope that you will not be returned in the next election.

Fourth, remember that you are a public servant, not a public master. You serve the people of this country, not a special interest group or groups.

Nuff said for now, let's see what you do as opposed to what you say, and if a fire can't be held to your feet in the meantime. It is hell having an informed constituency with near-realtime capabilities, isn't it?

    No Whining Zone

Bill O'Reilly is upset. People are being mean to him, and since he can't or won't fight back against those who are, he is going to turn around and pick on those he can hit. The problem is, he picked a target of the Internet and the blogosphere, and he is finding out that the people in those institutions can and will fight back. Those denziens are not the safe and easy target he thought they would be.

Out of the many wonderful posts on his ill-informed, illogical, and ill-considered rant, my favorite so far is this one from Rand Simburg. I dare him to post it as his next Fox column, I really do. Go read it, and then check out some of the others that point out the truth behind the spin, as well as just giving him a well-deserved clock cleaning. I have not watched his show for some time, since I don't consider it to be rational discourse (let people finish what they are saying before weighing in Bill, you might be surprised one day), so this won't change my viewing habits. Remember, though, that individual choice can and does have an effect.

By the way Bill, I blog pseudo-anonymously for contractual reasons (unless people take my pledge drive seriously and make it uneccesary), but tell you what. You want to face one of these anonymous people? Then bring it on because I can and will tell it to your face, on your show, in person. Think there are a lot more of us out here who would be glad to join in. So, I'm glad to bring some friends.

UPDATE: It was pointed out to me that I had erred by not posting the URL to the screed, so here it is. See Bill? Corrections made, and apologies offered for the oversight. That is the power of the Internet.

    Saving Pvt. Journalism Pt. 6

  • Part 6
From the background provided, it is clear that this is a complex situation and that simplistic solutions just won’t cut it. That is not to say that some of the suggestions I am going to put forward will not be simple and easy, but each will only be a part of what needs to be done.

The first thing I recommend is acknowledging the attacks on the Internet, the WWW, and the blogosphere as a start. These come from both within and without, and should be a matter of concern to everyone.
