If, Like Me, You Take Vioxx

Go here for some important information. If the server is swamped, you can get some coverage here though I suspect coverage here will be some of the best around. Talk to your doctor, and to your pharmacist. Calmly.

LW

PS: What has me PO'd right now is not that the suspected link is confirmed, or even that it is now off the market. It is that I just spent $100 yesterday refilling the prescription, and said prescription can't be returned.

Also, for good medical coverage I am going to Galen to see what he says, and to make use of the wonderful healthcare blogroll he has up.

UPDATE: A WWW Site has been established that includes instructions on how to get a refund on unused Vioxx.

Then go read Lileks. This is a very good thought piece with a LOT of food for thought. For me, the money line is "They’re brontos lumbering into velociraptor territory." This post is as much for his compatriots in the Old Media as it is for the rest of us, but it is writing about which we should all be thinking.

CBS Find Bottom, Commences Blasting

Yesterday, I asked how low CBS could go post Rathergate, and Little Green Footballs provides the answer. It is one thing to correct a transcript for accuracy, it is quite another to add things to it that were not in the original in an effort to cover up serious mistakes. If indeed mistakes they were.

LW

UPDATE: Go read this at INDC Journal for more. CBS really is not helping themselves. Hat Tip Instapundit.

UPDATE: Michelle Malkin points out that NBC has also jumped into the fraud fray with this bit of scaremongering. Whatever else it may be, it ain't journalism.

UPDATE: Just when you thought Rathergate could not get worse, or stranger, comes this story, with a huge hat tip to LGF. Truly, how low will it go.

X-Prize Attempt Underway

FNC is doing some lame coverage, but at least it is live. The studio person seems determined to show "balance" by getting into all the negatives. Anti-NASA, more about passion than money, etc. One of the things dragged up is the chance of disaster and death.

It will happen. Deal with it. In pursuit of any new venture, any new opportunity, any new frontier, there will be setbacks, destruction, and death. Risk is a part of life, and NASA has quite a few names on the wall. There are many more around the world. The current zero-defect/perfect safety crowd would end all advancement because there is no advancement in any area without risk.

Yes, we will lose people. We will lose craft. And we will move forward.

Launch. Nice, good music, wish the studio anchor had shut up as she promised. She lied. Then again, she is a broadcast journalist, so why am I not surprised she lied?

BTW, launch delayed because of winds. More later when it reaches separation altitude.

FNC studio anchor really seems obsessed with the risk.

1110 hours: Launch! Beautiful start, but craft is now spinning on its way up. Interesting. Really more of a roll around the long axis than a spin. Looks like it is stabilized. Good image on Fox, reportedly a camera attached to a telescope.

1113 hours: At height? That is announcement, no confirmation.

1116 hours: On the way back home. Things look really good, stable, nice images. FNC continues to hit on the risk.

1120 hours: Reports now that engine had to cut off early because of the roll. Thought it had gone out early, but was not sure.

FNC really has the bit in its teeth over risk. For the umpteenth time in the coverage they have brought up that civilians will die, it will hurt government funding of space efforts, etc. Asked and answered, by multiple guests. Some small bits of good info, but a lot of blather and poor reporting/info too.

Really want to know more about the roll. That is troubling, even though it was dealt with. Still a few bugs in the system, but not surprising given all.

Bloody hell will FNC give it a rest? We know, we know it is dangerous and that it is landing as a glider. Really don't think the touchdown is the most dangerous part no matter what they say. Think the most dangerous time was on the ride up, not the landing. Yes, it is gliding but that is why they are where they are. Pilot deserves kudos for all he has handled.

1133: Touchdown!

Looking forward to hearing from real experts about the roll, most especially the pilot. May hit mute until then, but if FNC keeps on as it has they will blather over it all.

Think the reported repeat attempt on Monday will depend on a lot, including exactly what was going on with the roll. If all goes well, and the roll is not a real bad problem, would not be surprised if they don't try for Monday. They have two weeks, so will see.

Really do wish CSPAN or someone would do straight coverage, no blather, for the Ansari flights. Actually, really wish I could have been there today for this.

Short version is that the door is indeed kicked open. The first two flights have shown that private enterprise can make it up and back, even if not smoothly. Then again, the start of any new industry is never smooth. You can look to coaches, ships, and even the airline industry. Smooth was not the goal, just showing it could be done was enough for now. Smoothness will come with time, experience, and with competition. All that needs to happen for now is smooth enough to get up there and back in reasonably good shape. Even if the next flight is not smooth, the door is still open to real space commercialization. It will take a literal act of Congress to close it now.

Some good commentary on the roll issue, as expected, is up at Transterrestrial Musings.

How Low Will CBS Go?

Rathergate continues, and Gunga Dan is NOT helping himself by running discredited scare stories. I like the Commissar's take on this a lot, and think that if the letter were couched in anti-Bush terms he would take it hook, line, and sinker. Just like he does with what passes for news. Yep, the last two initials of the network seem to describe very well what the peddle and the level of journalism involved.

Carnival Of The Recipes #7

Okay, this is not really a dish recipe, but two tips for cooking.

First, do you want your steaks and such to come out more like high-end restaurant steaks? When you cut the steak (or bring it home from the store), put it in a resealable bag along with extra-virgin olive oil, fresh chopped garlic, and fresh rosemary. Let it sit at least overnight, 24-hours is better, then cook. Do not salt the meat until it is done.

Second, want to add flavor to boiled things? You always hear about using beer and such to boil hot dogs and other delights. If you want to add some zing to hot dogs, pasta, or anything else you cook/heat by boiling without using beer or alcohol, consider adding some real (not artificial) apple cider vinegar (or balsamic) and spices to the mix. The vinegar adds zing, and the spices can add a great deal of flavor as well. There is nothing that says boiled must be bland. Season the water.

Oh, what the heck. Here is a link to my Chocolate Ecstasy Cake, sometimes called Exxxtasy Cake. Enjoy.

Taliban Johnny Wants To Be Free

To the surprise of many, I will state up front that I hope that the President honors this request. John Walker Lindh has petitioned the President to commute his sentence to time served based on the fact that Yaser Esam Hamdi has been let go. I think fair is only fair, and that Johnny should be let go too – with the same conditions. I say let him go if he renounces his American citizenship and is returned to Afghanistan. He still has some friends there, and they may want to talk with him on a variety of subjects including his apparent cooperation, so let’s arrange the meeting.

Some Humor For The Morning

Busy day, lite posting, but thought I would start the morning with a bit of humor. Someone I know has the occasional dealing with Hollywood-types and recently shared this. It seems that there is a television show that is not doing bad at all, especially for slot, network, type, etc. In fact, one of the actors (and I will not specify gender) has a bit of a following. It also seems that this actor tends to suffer from wind, as in breaking. The rumor is that it is so bad that cast and crew openly make comments and even the odd threat about it. Then something happened to brighten their day, and ours. It seems that for an episode, the major cast members ended up in real hazmat suits, sealed. Yep, you got it – this person ended up gassing themselves to the delight of cast and crew. From the description, I really do hope that they got it on film, and that it does end up on the blooper reel one day.

Virgin Galactic

One more sign that the space revolution is underway is the entry of Virgin Galactic. When people like Richard Branson take space tourism and space commercialization seriously, that means it is being taken very seriously indeed. I agree with Rand that the giggle factor is gone, and is being replaced by some serious market research, business plans, and preparations for even the next stage. That, to me, is one of the best single signs for truly taking humanity into space. Even if it means starting with a tourist or three at a time. The entry of Virgin ties into things said here, here, and in several other posts here.

NY-Bound Jetliner Grounded For Suspected Bomb

Sky News is reporting that an Olympic Airlines jet bound for New York was escorted by Tornado fighters and has landed at Stansted Airport after the pilot reported he believed a bomb to be on board. Updates as they become available.

LW

NOTE TO FNC: Olympic Airways and the Olympics are two separate things.

From Sky News, the plane was bound from Athens to NY and was diverted "under full emergency conditions" to Stansted. FNC is reporting that a Spanish passenger claimed to have a bomb, no verification on this so far.

No news on the Olympic site and the last press release was issued in June. From schedule information, this appears to be Flight 411 which departed Athens at 1230 hours local time. Athens airport has long had problematic security, which was a major issue for the Olympics. A number of changes were reportedly made for the Olympics, but current status is unknown.

Sky News is reporting the passengers are off, but no word on device or any of the info that has been reported on FNC.

AirWise shows that the flag carrier is up for sale or will be shortly.

Baghdad Broadcasting is reporting that the MoD portion is over, and a search of the plane underway. According to their story, a threat was phoned in to an Athens paper and authorities and the plane notified, prompting the pilot to request diversion.

UPDATE 1455 hours Eastern: Not a lot of new info to report. Sky News is reporting that there may have been up to three threats made, but that is not confirmed. More as I can find it.

UPDATE 1825 hours Eastern: Last report I can find is that search is still underway. More later.

UPDATE Monday AM: Plane has been cleared, and apparently the search was thorough. Instead of four or so hours, from reports the search went much longer. Glad this was done, and that the incident appears to have been a hoax. Far better to test procedures than to need them.

Hurricane Jeanne Blogging Starts

Well, for those tracking Jeanne, Boudicca has posts here, here, and here. Tammi is blogging a bit too, and Kathy has up a list of Florida bloggers and hurricane resources. I must confess, I love Val's message to Jeanne.

More Later.

LW

UPDATE 1: Rand Simburg has some posts here and here. VW at One Happy Dog Speaks is without power per Boudicca, who's own power was flickering. UPDATE: We appear to have LOS there, so figure power and/or internet access are gone, not unexpected. Tammi has made coffee and is hunkered down, and I have laid a bet on her. No, it has nothing to do with her proposed career switch. Kathy has up both a good update and some neat ASCII art.

UPDATE 2, 0525 hours Eastern. Tammi hasn't posted in a while, and looked to be losing power. Before that, she had posted some updates from various news sites and such, as well as what the change in landfall means for her and those previously hit. Note the new name for her site... Boudicca is still LOS which is not good since there were warnings that she could be without power for four weeks if it did go out. VW is also still LOS. Rand is also LOS and has been since early last evening. Kathy, awakened by the winds, has links and updates. Noble Pundit has been all over this. Just posted an interesting radar image and a lot of good posts you just need to go read. Florida Cracker continues to post and those pictures! And I agree, what is it with people and bridges in hurricanes??? Just keep scrolling down for updates. Debwire is finally getting some sleep, I hope. Val and Maynard have not posted in a while, but were well to the south with no problems reported last we heard from them. Figure Val is snuggled in with wife and Maynard is dealing with that messy pet of his. Hard to tell about Lee Ann since she hasn't posted since last Thursday. My Little Corner is another one since there are no new posts since early Saturday. Ocean Guy reports he is/was going to miss the worst of it. That's it for the early AM edition, more later. OH: You really also need to go read WeatherBlog for updates, good info, and more. No updates in a while, hope they are sleeping and not LOS.

UPDATE 3, 0720 hours: Val is up and has a short take on Jeanne. Snort. Sekimori has a fun drinking game up in regards idiotic media folk.

UPDATE 4, 0840 hours: DebWire is back up and posting. Am on the phone with Tammi, who has power but no cable and no internet. Level 2 winds, waterfront property, garbage all over courtesy of a neighbor, something hit the house but all appears okay. Tammi did sleep in her saferoom, and could hear all despite all the bulkheads. She does have coffee. All is good according to her. :) Huge amounts of rain (S***load), shrubbery has taken a pounding, but worst is allegedly behind them. She is taking that with a grain of salt, notes that south Orlando took a pounding. The people who lost everything in Charley and Frances are getting slammed again. Tampa is indeed going to wake up to a real surprise, and the tracks she is getting shows that it is going to go up through Pensacola and then on. No freightrains so far, but keeping an ear out. She is very worried about Tampa and what will happen there. Reports that the rain is a fine rain, but so much and so fast that it is hard to see anything. She had to run, but will be calling back soon.

UPDATE, 0918 hours: On the phone with Tammi again. Top of palm has come bouncing across, caught the screen of the pool cage, and is now busy pulling down the pool cage. Dead bird hit window and stayed there a bit, but now gone, not a good sign. She heard from a friend that West Palm got hit hard. She is very worried about Tampa, as people there are not prepared. Another tree just bounced by and the windows are leaking. She really is better prepared for no power than for no cable. Thank goodness it is a new complex, as the plants are all young, not brittle. Street in front is a river, back is lakefront, and with the southern track the ***** is taking it is going to be interesting. Seals are shot on windows, but at least windows are still in. Roofs holding up well, but lots of palm trees down, tops bouncing around. May try dial up later, very frustrated. Something keeps hitting the house, but still not going out into the garage in case Mr. Snake is still there. All internal doors are closed, just in case. Ooops. Rain is driving through seals and into the wall between windows. Discussion of local station who will no longer show Scarborough because he was such an idiot in his local report. "All he can tell us is that it is windy and he knows a Senator from W. Palm Beach. We will not be showing him again." LOL Tammi is estimating current winds at app. 100 mph right now. Really misses having her news fix, attempting to supply. "It's going to be a long flippin day" More treetops have gone by. Still waiting for the winds to start coming from the other direction, meaning that the eye has gone past her. News coverage I can get is really honking her off because it is not very good. Agree with her assessment.

UPDATE, 1000 hours: Water is up at least two feet further in the backyard, making it up three feet total in the last three hours. And "I don't live near the water!" Windows leaking again. "oooh someone's losing their mailbox. Oooh. There's another tree, just a little one." The wind is gusting badly, as I heard it over the phone as she was trying to deal with one or more of the windows. Neighbor's pool cage is gone, apparently another trash can from tourist neighbors came to visit. Tammi has to run, another phone call and a call to make to check on people. More later.

Tammi is back on dial-up and posting. I am taking a break and trying to work the Olympic Airline story. Hoping it is a false alarm of one type or another. LW

UPDATE 1520 hours: Guest blogger Morrigan says that Bou is okay just without power, some roof tiles, and a couple of the storm shutters. Glad to know they are okay.

Doing Good

I have written before about the need to do good, but do it constructively. More than ever, I think the lessons there must be considered, for fate is placing a lot of need our way.

The weather alone is doing damage, from ravaging the Caribbean to devastation in Florida and elsewhere. We have unique opportunities to help fight an important part of the war by giving to Operation Give and Operation ShoeFly among others. We can directly help our troops in a variety of ways, from Hook-A-Thon to Soldier’s Angels to Adopt A Sniper to Beer For Soldiers. We can help those in need here in the U.S. by giving to organizations ranging from the Mennonite Disaster Services to Strengthen The Good.

Also, look into helping individual bloggers. If you know of good jobs, contact Tammi, DaGoddess, or Kathy. Heck, I’m under employed and could use some work too. If you can make a donation, DaGoddess, The Delightful Ith, and Kathy would all appreciate a hit to their tip jars. To be honest, there are a lot more out there who need help, some who have no Amazon button and some who do. Choose wisely and do what you can.

For we can all do a good bit. I know someone who is in desperate straights, having been screwed over royally on paychecks and told flat out that they will not get the money they are owed. Too bad, so sad. Yet, this person still has given to those in need, and continues to do so. What are you willing to do? Can you live up to the challenge this person places before us all?

Choosing wisely is the heart of today’s food for thought: Think about what you can do, and do it wisely. It is not enough to donate to something that says it will do good, for what you must do is take the time to find out how much goes where, and where that where really is. Are you helping those in need? Or, just perpetuating a bad situation and making it worse. Can you live without fancy coffee for a week to help those in need? Choose wisely. Go back, read the post, and think.

Then do. And do what is right and best for everyone, including yourself.

Don’t just give a hand-out, for that is a cheap cop-out. Give a hand-up. Do some real good in the world. We will all be the better for it.

The real problem here is that they don't appear to to tell him what is objectionable on his site. I am writing them to inquire of it, and suggest you check this out too. Link courtesy of InstaPundit.

LW

Letter sent:   Sirs,

I am writing to inquire why you have decided that Bill Quick's Daily Pundit site (http://www.dailypundit.com/) is a hate site and otherwise in violation of your policies? Your letter to him, as published by him, has no specifics whatsoever on what you deem improper or offensive. How is he to know what to correct if you can not or will not provide that information? As a private company, you do have the right to do business as you see fit, but to act in such an apparent arbitrary and capricious manner does not appear to be good business in any sense of the word. Your full and complete explanation would be most helpful, both to myself for my site and to any and all who would consider doing business with you.

That was John Kerry yesterday, in his comments after the free Iraqi address to Congress. Clueless as well, still lost somewhere on the Cambodian border (navigation purportedly not being a strength of his) I imagine. All I have to ask is, this is the man who would be our strong, coalition-building Commander-In-Chief? Feh.

We're Back. Hire Kathy!

We are back after some behind-the-scenes upgrades and such, all done by the excellent Kathy Kinsley. Kathy has been my go-to person for a while now, I ,highly recommend her, and she needs the work. So, what are you waiting for? The only thing I forgot to do was to get her to install these two wonderful MT plugins. Hmmmmm. Well, are you still here? Go hire her, and if you need a nurse, go here, and if you need a good account manager/rep, go here.

Carnival Of The Recipes: Wurst Delight

Okay, I really don’t remember the proper name for this, but I had it in Austria last week and loved it.

Hardware:
Knife
Cutting board
Skillet

Ingredients:
Wurst or long hot dogs
Bacon
Cheese

Start by taking the wurst, come in a bit from the end, cut down, and then along the wurst until you reach the corresponding point at the other end. What you are doing is instead of cutting it in half, you are sort of carving it out into a canoe shape. Cut the cheese to fit the wurst, put in place, then put the carved out portion of the wurst back on top of the cheese. Wrap in bacon so that bacon covers and holds everything in place. Cook. Serve with mustard, potatoes, and such.

Enjoy.

This week's Carnival is bieng hosted by Mellow-Drama, so go check it out!

You Know, It's Not So Bad

No, things are not at all what I would like them to be. I would like to win the lottery and/or have the world's best job. Then again, a few minutes ago on a break, I saw what I think may have to be the world's worst job. That is the communications director for KE04, who has to come out and say with passion, sincerity, and a straight face that Kerry is telling the truth on issue X... I just don't think I could, or would, do that. In fact, I think I would rather shovel shit in Louisianna or dig ditches before I did that.

No, it's not coming back. Indeed, the only people who have introduced the legislation necessary to do so are Democrats. Don't believe me? Go look it up. Nor did Kerry say that Bush was going to do so: That was just the AP doing it's usual outstanding job of trying to equal the lofty heights of unbiased journalism set by CBS. What a pity. Gee, there appears to be some very good reasons he was denied entry. Simply because he had some hits years ago does not give him a pass on the rest of his life. I have not listened to his stuff since he called for the death of Rushdie, in response to The Satanic Verses. Yes, I think there should be a full accounting here from the U.S., one that perhaps shows where all the "peace" money he raises goes and what it is truly used for.

Rathergate: The Panel, Criminal Investigation

Well, CBS has named a two-person panel which is a good start, but I think only a start. At the least three people are needed, and I would urge them to pick someone who has familiarity with New Media as a part of it. Only time will tell what will come from this.

Time is the key here. The public deserves to know what went on, in detail, well before the election. This goes beyond the actions of CBS in airing the documents. It means that we need a full criminal investigation of where the memos came from; how they got to CBS; the full extent of any coordination and/or collusion with any campaign; and, the full intent of this effort. To do anything less is a disservice to the public and to the Republic.

UPDATE: And all the more needed NOW if this is true and Mapes is still actively working the story. Hat Tip goes to LGF.

Media: Why Rathergate Matters

Yesterday as I flipped through the stations, I caught a number of people presenting the argument that CBS has acknowledged the error, let’s move on to the real story here, which was Bush and his failure to do his service. CBS is getting a lot of help, and high-powered help, in its efforts to try and re-focus attention away from the real issues. This post is going to focus on the first of the two real issues I see.

In this post I talked a bit about the process that is involved in a basic story. A story of this magnitude does not go through the basic cycle, and that is the heart of the media story here.

Rathergate: The Need For Federal Investigations

Amidst all the wild spinning yesterday, I heard something with which I fully agreed. I was a bit surprised, as it came from a member of the Old Media. The source was John Gibson’s My Word, which alas has not been updated on the Fox site. He made a number of excellent points, and I will now make mine.

First off, we have someone or several someones who are involved with forging Federal documents. A clear crime has been committed, and it is one pursued almost routinely when such is brought to light.

Second, those documents were used to attack a sitting President in time of war.

Third, those documents and the attack made were so done with the intent to influence and/or alter an election. If this is not election fraud, I would love to know what is.

Fourth, there is evidence that people involved with the story and the forgeries had more than one contact with one of the campaigns involved in the election. Remember, both Joe Lockhart and Max Cleleand have admitted talking to Burkett, which along with the decision by CBS News to violate policy and arrange such contacts, raises a number of issues. Add in that various timelines show the possibility of a bit more than limited contact, and the need for some form of external check becomes clear – even if just to clear the air.

At least two crimes are in evidence, and I hope that the political ramifications will not prevent the FBI, DoD, and the FEC from carrying out their responsibilities.

This one goes under terrorism no matter how you cut it. The perp is as cowardly a terrorist as any in the Middle East, attacking from behind and bravely running away when confronted. Okay, this story just makes me have to ask if it a Kerry trait to try to break up critical alliances and/or otherwise provide aid and comfort to the enemy in times of war?

There are some who will listen to her, I know. I had to listen to a group of Australians during a Danube river cruise on Saturday loudly talk politics, denigrate America, and such to the point that I left the cruise early just to get away from the rude bunch of boors. From some of what I was forced to listen to, I think that at least some of the group would agree with this tripe. This is not a good thing, and I know some Australians who are not going to be happy to have an American try to stick a huge oar into their politics, all in an effort to try to influence the election here.

Religion Of Beheading, Yet Another

Go here. The interesting thing here is the demand for release of women prisoners, of which there are only two: and they were both involved with bio weapons research. Gee, wonder why terrorists and outside fighters would want them released. This story does have a local angle for me, in that one of the remaining hostages is from near the temporary lair. My thoughts go out to them and all the families, and especially to those left behind by the brutal murder -- not execution -- of Mr. Armstrong. May the light shine on them all.

Just a thought to share: anytime, anywhere, if a group tries to take you hostage, seize a plane, etc., remember that no matter what you are probably going to die. The only choice left is how.

Can Anyone Tell Me

Why are we still members of the UN? Why do we continue to prop up and support an organization that has so clearly failed of charter and mission? That condones racism, genocide, torture, murder, slavery, and more for its own ease or gain? Or the gain of relatives and friends or such that may just happen to share that wealth perhaps? I cought the news of Koughy's comments whilst in Europe, because it was big news there (and may have fueled a loud chounversation I will discuss later). I do plan to start asking my elected representatives about this, and the possibility of trying a third time for something that works.

Bullshit

I’ve been out most of the day and have just gotten back to the temporary lair. Via various sources including Instapundit, I’ve read Dan Rather’s statement, and the title of this piece sums up my feelings at the moment. Does he really think that the public is that stupid?

There is no way he would let a politician get away with something like this, what makes him think that he can do so? It in no way addresses any of the substantive issues and is a masterpiece of non-apology apologizing. I suspect that the “if I knew then what I know now” has less to do with the memos and a lot more to do with the blogsphere. Pathetic is the least descriptor of this statement.

Mr. Rather, you need to address the source(s) of the memos; detail the procedures followed or not followed; the rationale for the decisions made; and, most of all, who made those decisions and decided to air such a shoddy piece of work that fails any standard of objective journalism. Indeed, a piece of work that would get a journalism 101 student a failing grade. Finally, you fail to tell us what you will do to truly get to the bottom of this, and the steps that will be implemented to ensure that something like this never happens again.

There are many more questions about this story, all the more so in light of your stonewalling, than just the memos. The public deserves and requires a complete and full accounting from you just as it would any public servant. You, sir, are accountable and so far you have failed of that task. You fail your network and its vaunted reputation; you fail your colleagues in journalism; and, you fail in your duty to your viewers and the nation.

In view of this statement and the manifest reluctance of CBS News to acknowledge problems and errors, you have zero credibility. If you truly want to begin the process of restoring honor and integrity to the organization, you, Andrew Heyward, and any others in the chain of command who green-lighted this piece need to resign immediately.

Ms. Mapes, allow me to echo John Ellis and suggest that if you have not already done so, that you retain independent counsel immediately. Furthermore, I strongly suggest that you have copies outside of the office of all electronic files, correspondence, paperwork, and meeting notes so that no unfortunate accidents result in such being lost.

The War Of Enlightenment

I had planned for this to be a much longer post, but things are a bit hectic here at the lair. So, I am going to lay out a quick framework to which I hope to return in time and flesh out a bit.

Yesterday was a day for those murdered by terrorists on 9-11, and to my mind a day for all the victims in this latest battle. Today is my day. If anyone is truly interested in my memories and catharsis, go for it. I will not spend today on just one part of the past, but a broader sweep, and on the future.

What we are in is not a War on Terror. The campaign against terrorism is just one part of a much larger war. For what we are in is the penultimate battle for the Enlightenment of our generation. For what is at stake are the ideals and the accomplisments of the Enlightenment that are the true achievement of our civilization.

That is the cornerstone of all we have. It is capitalism, which is one function, that gives us our advanced and strong economy. It is the concepts of individual worth, liberty, freedom, and responsibility that drive the economic and social engines. It is the combination, the serendipitous workings of the various aspects, that have literally begun to take humanity to the stars.

These functions also are a threat to those who either live in, or want to return to, “simpler” times. Times where the strong ruled, peasants did as they were told, and the vast majority of individuals had no value other than as workers. There are many such people and groups, and they range from the radical Islamicists to radical socialists. It is not our culture or strong economy that they hate, for they are just symptomatic to the greater threat to them: freedom and the concepts of same that taking root throughout the world.

We are now in the middle of a war that will determine if the ideals of the Enlightenment will continue to spread and grow, or if humanity as a whole will drop back into barbarism of the worst stripe. The campaign on terror is a part; the coming war between radical and “moderate” Islam is a part; the struggles and wars between fundamentalists and “moderates” in Christianity and other religions is a part; the current Presidential campaign is a part; and, the war between socialism and other radical thought and the original ideals of the Enlightenment is yet another. All of these are going on now, and the decisions made in one part shape the fight and affect the others.

The lines in each are reaching a point where they can be clearly drawn. The enemies of the Enlightenment and freedom are clearly defined. “Let’s Roll” was a good start for the first part in the campaign on terror. It defined the immediate needs and responsibilities. For the larger fight it is time to toggle the selector, define the broader War and its needs and responsibilities, and deal with it as a whole. Let’s Rock.

Quick Note On Subaru Service

Okay, things are hectic and I am on the road a good bit right now. Yesterday, Pups had run a bit rough, but not too bad, so figured maybe some bad fuel. Given Frances, water in some of the gas I bought out on the road was not unlikely. This morning, things seemed better, then they got worse. Much worse, and it was clear that one or more cylinders were not firing and that there could be worse problems. Thank goodness for cell phones, as I was able to locate the Subaru dealer closest to where I was and managed to make it there without a tow. Hook up the computer, and do some checking, and what do we find? Spark plug wires in such bad shape that they are arcing within the engine compartment. Wheeeeee. What fun. Especially since not all that long ago I paid for the super duper 50,000 mile service at Madison Square Subaru in Huntsville, where I had the distinct impression they had changed the plugs, checked or changed the wires, etc. For what that service cost, they sure should have changed those wires. As it is, I can't be sure the plugs were changed and the wires sure as heck were bad. In for a penny, in for a pound, I had a full diagnostic run, the oil changed, and we got the worst of the wires changed out. They did not have enough to do both sets, so I went ahead and paid for the second pair which they have now ordered, and when I am back by there in about 10 days they are going to install them for me. I have also decided that Pups will never again go for service at Madison Square Subaru.

Yet, keeping in mind the lessons of the other day, I did not let it get me down. There being nothing I could do whilst waiting, I got directions to a nearby restaurant within easy walking distance and enjoyed a book and some fair fried oysters. I also changed my plans and ended up going to an Apple store and getting some help with a problem. Net result, my computer is now reading my digital videocamera. Finished up everything I needed to do, and am now relaxing a bit. Who knows, I may even go see a movie tonight, and I hope that all of you will take a moment to appreciate the day.

Prayers And Thoughts Needed

Folks, I don't care what your beliefs may be. What I do ask is that you pray, meditate, cast spells, or whatever for the people in Florida, and all those already hit in Grenada, Cuba, and elsewhere by the hurricanes that have already come to visit. They need your thoughts and prayers more than ever, as yet another storm is on the way. There has been little chance to begin to repair the damage done, physical or psychological. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare yet again. As for me, I hope that Ivan gives Florida a break and a lot of good people a chance to recover. On a separate note, Denita could use some for her Mom too.
