Capping Off The Trip

After getting back from the marathon drive, I had the pleasure of breakfast Monday morning with Contagion and Ktreva and their lovely children. It was a wonderful way to cap off the weekend, and -- again -- I hope we can repeat the event soon.

I am alive, just loads of work and four days of almost continuous driving that has resulted in some tales -- as soon as a certain tail unkinks and gets back to its normal furry glory. And feeling. Non-painful feeling.

My Favorite Tribute To Rob

There are many good posts up saying goodbye to Rob, aka Acidman. Several of those who knew him have put up well written posts: Denny, Eric, Joanie, and Velociman. The Evilicious Blonde put up a tribute that stands well too.

It truly hit me this morning, and I was so glad that Eric linked to what I think may well be the perfect tribute. It brought a smile to my face and had me trying not to laugh too loudly at work, and the thing is, I could swear I heard another laugh as well. It wouldn't surprise me, as I think it would tickle his fancy on many levels.

A Night On The Phone

Pity it couldn't be on the town in honor of Rob, but it has been good talking with friends and people who knew him. Well said was the comment made that Rob had a way of bringing people together. Sometimes it was in horror (OMG, what is he up to now), sometimes in anger (that SOB, rah rah rah rah growl), sometimes in sheer admiration (Damn, I wish I had said that).

Rob, you did it again. Thanks for bringing some of us together again after far too long. Peace be to you old grouch, and thanks.

A Giant Passes

I have just gotten the news via a call from a friend, that Acidman has died. Rob was a character, and I am very glad I had the chance to meet him a couple of years ago. Love him or hate him, he was a remarkable writer and a painfully honest man. What you saw was what you got. For me, I hope his end was peaceful and pain free, for he deserved that given the pain in his life.

You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Blog Happenings Of Note

First up, I urge everyone to get over to Basil's (not the fox) Blog and ask questions of photoblogger Jan Bussey of Cascade Exposures. This talented photographer is worried there will be no questions, so let's give her plenty to answer. Meantime, go check out the outstanding photography.

Second, get over to the PC Free Zone, which is celebrating the milestone of its 100,000 visit. Wild Thing truly is a wonderful lady, and I hope one day we can meet in person. If you don't visit her regularly, you should.

Third, blog meister (diva?) Harvey is celebrating three years of blogging. Go wish him well, and drop a fake memory of Harvey here.

Finally, go read this post by Bloodspite and do what you can to help.

There is more I want to do, but am under the weather, so will call it a day for now.

Letter To The Brass Linked By CBS

My previous entry A Letter To The Brass has been linked by the CBS News Blog. They somehow got the idea I was talking about the media in it, and that it was a mock letter to the brass. Hate to dissapoint them, but it was a real letter that I did send to several points of contact in Marine leadership. Of course, as I told them, if the shoe fits...

I'm Not Dead Yet...

Just haven't had time to do much posting. The day job bosses liked something I did, and have told me to run with it -- which is great except there is an unspoken expectation that I can make up for the project being delayed almost a full year. Add to that having to do all the regular duties at the same time, and I am a touch tired. The grass has not listened to me (Cnute had his ocean, I have my lawn) and is having to be mowed multiple times a week, plus am trying to lay in my garden and more.

More soon, including thoughts on single-author blogs and changes in the blogosphere, soon. That is, if the lawn doesn't get me...

It's Not That...

There is not a lot to blog about, just not a lot of time. Huge project at work calling for some long hours and a lot of effort. Lots to do at the Lair, both in terms of the lair itself and the yard. A few other things going on as well. So, just saying that things will continue to be sporadic, esp. if we keep getting storms like of late.

Open Letter To The Lawn: There is no need to take the warmth and rain as a challenge, much less an invitation to unbridled growth. If you will see fit not to grow four inches in less than five days, both the lawn mower and myself as its mover, would be most appreciative.

Should I?

Or shouldn't I?

The cyberstalker has returned yet again, that brave soul speaking truth to power and haunting my days and blog to bring misery and dismay upon all. *Cough* That courageous soul who has posted as John Young and used about every alias in the book except, of course, their real name. *choke* That person who implies, if not outright claims, to speak for NASA and to know all, reveal all. *wheeze* A person who just happens to spend time in or near Reston, KSC, Michoud...

Logic and civility long ago failed, for rational discourse (much less rationality) were beyond them. Taunting and mocking grew way too easy, and so lost appeal. Lately, I've just been ignoring them and filing abuse complaints with ISPs.

The kick is that their efforts to gain attention for themselves may have paid off. I have an ISP that is willing to turn over all information they have on this creature to law enforcement if I file a complaint about their campaign. I also happen to be aware that their antics have also come to 9th level attention elsewhere shall we say.

So, what to do. Should I file a legal complaint and strip away the mask? Should I work through or with an agency that might just have an iron in the fire on this? Or, should we all just ignore them and continue to pray for them?

Decisions, decisions...

Wolf Park Blogfest: The True Story

Yes, this is very late but I had to wait for law enforcement, various prosecutorial jurisdictions, and the settlement provided Lafayette Brewing before posting.

I knew it was going to be an interesting weekend for myself and for Wolf Park, but I had no idea just how interesting it would be. Friday evening should have tipped me off. It took dogged perseverance and the use of overhead resources to find out that some had come to town early and were descending upon a hapless local eatery for dinner. Wanting to meet people, I went down and found them. I should have known better.

First up, I saw Contagion, or Mr. Huggy as he might better be known. I don't know what happened in his childhood, but I have never met someone so needy about being hugged and touched in my life. Every time you turn around, he wants to hug and touch, or better yet have you hug and touch him. In the immortal words of Dax, Just Damn!

The lovely and charming Ktreva was next on my path, but that was not to be. I was immediately accosted by a dark-haired woman who hit me. And then hit me again on behalf of a woman I've never even met in person. BoBo blogger indeed, the name should be the BamKaPow blogger!

The fourth in that grouping was a tall and lovely lady who's delicious er, attributes were overshadowed by a sleek rump bearing not only ISO 9000 certification stamps, but a Detroit Automotive Premium Choice Quality sticker as well. The turbo-charged talk that poured fourth meant that it could only be the Quality Weenie.

Dinner ended quickly with Kvetra gutting the waitron for slow service, so we adjourned to my home before the cops could arrive. Despite detailed directions, they still managed to get lost, and it took a searchlight to steer them in. Contagion promptly demanded another hug and some Asti, and then they all cut loose. It was a circus of activity, which was augmented by the arrival of Tammi, T1G, BloodSpite and BloodSpouse. The carnage is beyond description, and thanks to Quality Weenie, my chandeliers will never be the same.

The next day saw us off to the Tippacanoe Battlefield and then to Wolf Park. At the Battlefield, we were joined by this strange guy who would beat on anything and everything with sticks. The lady with him promptly pulled out bright lights and a rubber hose and used them on me as she demanded to know things like the average rise and fall of wolves in the Bay of Fundy. It could only have been Bodhran and his better half.

It was an ominous foreshadowing of the tragedy to come that Harvey ran late, and made Smiling Dynamite late as well. They arrived, and promptly ran off with Tammi to talk; unfortunately, no one knew where they went and they did not answer yells or phone, so everyone left for the park but we did leave trails of breadcrumbs for them. It was even more ominous when Harvey arrived late at the park, stuffed from the crumbs.

We have agreed not to talk too much about things, both for reasons legal and out of respect for Smiling Dynamite. Yet, the picture here tells the tale, for Harvey -- Mr. Loves To Camp And The Outdoors -- fell behind once again, but at least was rated a tasty bread-stuffed dish.

Later, at the celebration wake, as Smiling Dynamite did a twist-and-shout of mourning on the table, this guy showed up, though Ifni alone knows why. How on Earth a nice guy like him came to want to hang with this group of reprobates is beyond me.

Everyone seems convinced that it was cold, and I just don't understand it. It was barely brisk that day.

In truth, it was great to meet old friends again, and to meet the wonderful and lovely BoBo and the delightful and lovely Quality Weenie. BloodSpite and BloodSpouse were strangers and now known, and it was fun to meet Wes and be interrogated by his better half. A true pleasure it was to answer her questions and explore possibilities. It was also good to meet Jerry, though I still think he was crazy to come join the group.

My thanks to all who participated, and I look forward to seeing many of you here again, and most especially out at the Park.

For those who could not make it to Wolf Park, but would like to live vicariously, you can shop the Gift Shop online; find out about Wolf Park Seminars; sign up for Wolf Park Photography Seminars with Monty Sloan; sponsor a wolf or fox; donate towards general needs or specific needs such as ramps, enclosure improvements, or other; and, check out the Wolf Park Photos of the Day.

The Start Of Some Changes

I can't do all I would like, but I've started to re-do the blogroll a bit. Time, and the inability to reliably access MuNu, are slowing it down, but I am glad to have up a new list of those bloggers I have met.

Now, I have included Denny on here though the meeting was brief. In point of fact, he was grouchy, and may have run screaming like a girl when Eric began to sing... That's my story, and I may stick with it. Maybe not...

With a bit of luck, more changes soon. Many more, including design and some changes designed to promote more discourse. We will see. Meantime, I really do hope to have up my Howl on the Prowl wrap-up soon...

Howl On The Prowl: A Ru From The Lair

My hope is that everyone had a good time, and wasn't too cold despite the temperatures and wind. Of course, there was not enough time to do even half the things I would have liked for us to do, but those who braved it all got at least half of a tour, and the chance to see an interaction demo before the start of Howl Night.

As for me, it was good to meet people and to have some people over Friday night despite the lack of hospitality I was able to provide. It was good to feel the Lair filled with conversation, laughter, and music. And pretty good music it was too!

We were up late, up early, but I know that one group with a 13-15 hour drive is now safely on their way. Not sure about the others, am not about to call and risk waking any who did sleep in. Hence, the Ru rather than a full howl. Want to know what a Ru is? Well, you will just have to come back one day and let me tell you as it was one of the things I didn't get to cover/do yesterday.

My thanks to you all, and I hope it was fun and wonderful for you. It sure was for me. Thanks for taking part.

Howl On The Prowl Update 4(?)

Folks, there is still room and time for you to attend Howl On The Prowl 06 in beautiful Battle Ground and Lafayette, Indiana on 18 February. There are going to be some good people attending, and good blogs represented, so join on in the fun. You can show up at the door, so to speak, but to be assured of having a place at the dinner table that afternoon, I need to have your name by no later than noon on 10 February.

For those attending or thinking of attending, you need to keep the following in mind:

Dress
It is strongly recommended that you bring some layers and dress warm, as the unseasonably mild temperatures may go away. Wear comfortable clothing and clothing that you will not mind getting muddy, dirty, wet, or even damaged. No open-toed shoes, and I will have no sympathy for anyone wearing heels. We will laugh at you.

Keep in mind that that we could find ourselves getting put to work at Wolf Park by the Managing Director. This is the same person who put T1G to work when he visited, and has been known to co-opt tour groups on the odd occasion. So, keep all that in mind as you plan what you want to wear that day

Equally, I suggest you not wear leather, and that you have no dangly things on the clothes. Dangly things get caught in any number of things, which is not a good thing. I would also recommend that you not wear earrings, studs, or other visible piercings. Anything under clothes is, of course, okay.

This may seem a little overboard, but I am trying to make sure that every possible set of circumstances is covered. Far better safe than sorry.

Other
If you have stadium seats or pads, bring them. The stands are aluminium, and they will suck every bit of heat out of you. I have been out at Wolf Park outside all day in -40 wind chills, and the coldest I have ever been was the one time I tried sitting on the stands for part of Howl Night. If you don't have seats or pads, bring blankets. First, place several layers of blanket between you and the stands. Then, have another blanket (or two) to put over you as you will be sitting still. Folded up bath towels work well for seat padding too. Be creative.

There will be some hot tea and such available at the park during the afternoon. If you have a particular thing you want or like to drink, non-alcoholic, then please feel free to bring it. Alcohol is not allowed at Wolf Park, so be forewarned. There will be plenty of opportunities for that later...

Cameras are allowed and you are most welcome to take pictures. It is asked, however, that you not share or post pictures of anyone who has not given permission for their face to be shown. The wolves and similar critters have all signed blanket permission statements, so you can post them to your heart's content. Be sure to check out the photography seminars coming up, done by noted nature and wolf photographer Monty Sloan.

For those with children (of any age) both the dinner location and Lafayette Brewing are family friendly. The manager at LBC has assured me that kids are welcome in the downstairs area up until closing. I will also note for kids and those not wanting alcohol, that the rootbeer there is very good.

The gift shop will be available with a wide variety of merchandise. Books, jewelry, collectables, photographs, and more are there waiting for you...

Schedule
11-12: Walking tour and visit to the Tippacanoe Battlefield, with possible walks to Prophet's Rock and other sites.

12-12:45: Lunch on your own

1-5: Tour of Wolf Park

5-6:45: Dinner at a local establishment

7-9: Howl Night

Afterwards: More food and libations at Lafayette Brewing.

Since the park is being generous enough to let us in whilst closed, I have set the following prices for the tour/Howl Night combo:

0-5: Free
6-12: $5
13 and up: $10

Please have cash on the barrel head as I want the park to get all the money, and no percentage lost to credit card fees and such. Any additional donations you want to make will be most appreciated.

If anyone is interested in a special briefing and walking tour in Lafayette on Sunday, let me know.

Those Attending
These are the bogs of the people who have indicated they are attending:

Bad Example
Bobo Blog
Drunken Wisdom
Mamamontezz's Mental Rumpus Room
Miasmatic Review
One For The Road
Quality Weenie
Smiling Dynamite
Tammi's World

I Want To Join The Bad Example Clan Because

Well, heck. I've always been a joiner, willing to submerge myself in the greater whole (sp?) as it is always easier to be a non-conformist in a larger group where one can conform. Since Ol' Brokeback is creating a whole new group... Yeah, pity about his back, heard that Smiling Dynamite broke it during, ah, the birthday celebration. Yeah, that's it. Don't know what else he flippin expected...

I don't meet the rules: I think new bloggers should not be encouraged, but rather used as navigation bouys and race track bumpers; this is a job, nothing more, nothing less; I have no sense of humor At All; I hunt down and flay those who tease, taunt, or ridicule me; and, my life is too serious for laughter.

So, any of the interrelated members of that family care to vouch for my lack of character?

A Roar From The Lair

First, some cowardly deficient (deficients?) threaten the deliciously naughty Blondage. Yes, I read and enjoy her, and she is on the list of blogs to be blogrolled as soon as I get the chance. She may get a NSFW rating, but her site is fun and enjoyable if you don't have a broomstick permanently placed where the sun don't shine.

Second, a company threatened Techography because it didn't like an opinion expressed there. Facts be damned, they didn't like it and they have a bankroll and Calimus and BloodSpite don't. So, in a power play equivalent of a grown man beating a toddler, they forced the article down.

I am not happy with either case.

For the first, there is little I personally can do. I can only hope that the authorities track those responsible down and deal with them to the fullest and harshest extent of the law. Those responsible deserve nothing less, and a whole lot more IMO.

For the second, well, the Internet is a wonderful place and caches exist in many sites and services. Yes, Techography complied with the order, but it was not hard to do a little digging and learn which post and which company. I thought of all manner of things to do, but then started truly thinking.

This action is not the mark of a successful company, nor of competent and effective leadership. All that time spent in venture capital and related workshops and presentations paid off, for this is in many ways the hallmark of a company with problems, from the top down.

Now, I am not going to name the company here -- go figure that out for yourself. I figure any group that insecure and that on the edge won't hesitate to go after any single blogger -- or to take vindictive action against Techography just for spite given the mindset shown. Now, I hope that one day soon they face a blogswarm like they never imagined in their worst nightmares, and that the EFF joins in and gets positively medieval on their sorry asses.

Meantime, I have made a note of the company and its leadership, not just the top but down as far as I can. I will never do business with them, and I will do everything in my power to prevent any employer, client, friend, acquaintance, or other from doing so. If they are already doing business with that entity, I will encourage them to cease immediately and with prejudice as the actions taken bespeak something to be avoided. Furthermore, I have noted the leadership, and I will not only not do business with them here, I will avoid any company that they found, work with, are employed by, etc. now and forever amen. If I have the opportunity, I will blackball them from any club, organization, job, honor, award, or other venue to which I have a say.

Don't like that? Too bad. I sure as hell don't like you or what you have done. Want to threaten me with a lawsuit? On what grounds? There is a lawyer I know, who practices before the Supreme Court, who will love to hear it. Don't like my analysis? Fine, it is my opinion, and I am entitled to post it and, even better, I will be glad to detail for the press and a jury why and how I came up with it. Threaten me and I will call in the world on you by using every contact I have literally around the world, and most especially in DC and New York. I will give you all the publicity you can handle.

Howl On The Prowl #3, Lodging

Just a quick update with some notes on lodging. There are three places I am suggesting, and I have stayed at two of them. The first is the The Union Club in the Purdue Memorial Union. Rooms are nice, it is on campus, and not too far from the end of the festivities. The second is the Lee's Inn on I-65. The rooms I have had were nice and in good condition, and it is easy to find. The other, the Super 8, is near the park and offers a Wolf Park discount. I can't vouch for them one way or another as I have never even been in the doors, but it is an option. The phone there is 765-567-7100, and it is off I-65 and exit 178.

Howl On The Prowl Update #2

Hear ye, Hear ye, Hear ye!

The Howl On The Prowl blogmeet is a go! On 18 February, a group of demented intrepid and intriguing bloggers are meeting in Lafayette for a day of fun. The highlight of the day will be a tour of Wolf Park in the afternoon and participation in Howl Night that night.

First, a teaser: For those who come, I am working on a special event for Saturday morning from 9-10:30. Nope, not going to talk about it here, it's a surprise.

The plan for the day is as follows:

11-12: Walking tour and visit to the Tippacanoe Battlefield, with possible walks to Prophet's Rock and other sites.

12-12:45: Lunch on your own

1-5: Tour of Wolf Park

5-6:45: Dinner at a local establishment

7-9: Howl Night

Afterwards: More food and libations at Lafayette Brewing.

Since the park is being generous enough to let us in whilst closed, I have set the following prices for the tour/Howl Night combo:

0-5: Free
6-12: $5
13 and up: $10

This is close to the normal combo ticket price, and includes a very small donation to the park. Any additional donations you care to make to them will be very much appreciated.

The Wolf Park gift shop will be available to us as well, and it is filled with books, pictures, mugs, jewelry, and more.

I have sent out an e-mail update to those who have indicated they are coming, so if you have not gotten it drop me a line so I can figure out where I goofed and get you on the list.

If you want to come, drop me a line so I can start including you on the updates and such. We will need a firm count a week ahead of time for the dinner reservation, so keep that in mind. You are welcome to decide to come after that, but you may have to do dinner on your own.

Wolf Fest 06?

The Howl On The Prowl?

Okay, so we do have a few interested. Before I proceed further, here are some options, and I want to see what real interest there may be.

First, I talked with the managing director out at Wolf Park, and she is willing to go along. Even though the park is closed right now (except for Howl Nights), we can do something one Saturday. We may also get drafted into doing work around the park, but you pays your money and you takes your chances. Whether we work or not, the fee (chosen by me, not the park) per person will be $10, which covers the tour, includes Howl Night that night, and a very small donation to the park. At least one staff member is willing to join in the fun, and we may be able to entice one or two more...

Second, unless we have ten or more show up, I will not try to block rooms at a hotel. I will be glad to recommend one near Wolf Park that offers a Wolf Park discount, or another nice hotel in Lafayette, but unless and until that will be it.

Third, if we really want to see the wolves at their most active, we should do this in February or very early March. So, which Saturday in February would work best for most people?

Fourth, for a quick dinner between the afternoon and the start of Howl Night, we have a couple of options. We could see if it might be possible to do hamburgers and brats out at Wolf Park, or we could go someplace to eat. What would you like to do?

Finally, I can also put in a reservation for post Howl Night at Lafayette Brewing. The food is good, the stout is great, and the rest of the brews are not bad. I don't think it will hold up to Fritz's, but it will do.

Okay, what say you?

Fritz Fest '06

One of the nicest things about being able to work at home on occasion is choosing how I will spend my breaks. Today, I've chosen to catch up a bit and post about the wonderful Fritz Fest '06. I want to thank yet again the inimitable That 1 Guy for pulling this together and being such a great host.

I met some new people, and did not get to spend nearly enough time with them. I met Richmond, the Freedom Folks, TalulaZephyr, Sarah, Leslie, and Ktreva. Hmmmmm. Yep, I am forgetting something, what is it? Oh, yes, I guess there were some guys there too so I should mention meeting Contagion and Og.

In all seriousness, the biggest disappointment of the day was in not being able to stay for a few additional hours to talk with all these fine people. I had been looking forward to talking more with Contagion, as we are both man enough to wear the kilt. After meeting his better half and the other lovely ladies, I am sore hurt not to have been able to spend more time with them too.

It was also a great time to catch up with old friends. I had a truly marvelous time at Tammi's beforehand, made all the better by the arrival Sunday morning of Teresa who presented Tammi with a truly wonderful gift. I have so been looking forward to saying that Tammi ordered me into her bed (pity she wasn't in it) and that I took a shower with two beautiful women (in the house). Later, I was reacquainted with TNT. Such wonderful and charming company. Oh, yeah, Blackfive, Grau, and Harvey were there too. I think. Don't look at me that way, I was distracted.

I did get the time to talk with the lovely and charming wife of Fritz, and even was given a tour of their kitchen. Big surprise at that, as I wanted to see where the delicious food came from, and enjoyed the talks with her. The looks I got from T1G were enough to keep the wolf at bay from one of the lovely daughters also present...

My regret is in not being able to spend more time with such a diverse and wonderful group of people. Maybe sometime soon... And maybe, just maybe, Contagion and I will get over the painful shyness we both have...

Before I leave, however, I want to thank Eric for being there in spirit, and keeping us in spirits. Thanks my brother!

Who Wants A Blogmeet?

While up in the frozen north in the warm and wonderful Fritz's, the Omnibus Driver began pushing the idea of a blogmeet in or near Lafayette, Indiana with Saturday Day and Evening to be spent touring Wolf Park and the late evening/night to be spent somewhere like Lafayette Brewing. Anyone interested, let me know and I will think, repeat THINK, about trying to set something like that up.

No Blog Sabbath Today

Not as normal at any rate. I will be updating my hurricane post/list and getting it up as soon as I can. I will also try to do a photo a la my normal post, but no promises.

Meantime, for a good blog sabbath moment I will tell a quick tale. I gave two tours at Wolf Park yesterday, and the second one featured a wonderful group from Australia. They, and the others in the tour, were interested and engaged, so we took a long time (about double the official tour time) on the tour. One of the young boys from Australia asked some very good questions. At the end of the tour, one of the younger boys, perhaps about six or so, came up and presented me with a tiny stuffed Koala bear that clips onto clothing with its legs (that also hold a eucalyptus leaf) and told me "thank you" and how much he/they had enjoyed the tour. After something like that, I could have been banned from the park for life, and my day still would have been made. Thank you, young man!

Apologies Of Sorts

To all. I am several days behind on e-mail right now, and behind on posts as well. Things will get caught up, and soon I hope.

Right now, while the weather is good, I am trying to get as much yard work done as possible before winter sets in. Yesterday saw me come home from work, finish putting out the edging stone (and one pallet did not outline half the plans), use the spreader to get out granulated insecticide, and nail up clamps on the underside of the bottom of the deck railing to hold my blue rope lights. Today should, with luck, be weed-n-feed and the planting of about 50 bulbs -- will see. I have to get as much done before it rains, and before it gets too cold and such to plant and do.

More soon.

Weird Week Warning

Well, anything that has WWW for an acronym is going to be weird and interesting... I am working at home this morning waiting for the roofers to come, as -- you guessed it -- there was a leak in the new roof. First thing this morning means by noon, if at all, so I am working at home trying to get all the wonderful last minute things that have to be done for a major business trip and display done. While I am unamused with the contractor and his roofers, it was not as bad as I thought it might be. I would have been surprised (and very happy) had there been no leaks, but given the levels shown I am just happy not to have multiple major leaks...

Later come the joys of travel, the farce that is the TSA, and all such as that. I look forward to being in Baltimore and DC, but don't look forward to the trip at all.

More soon.

What Say You?

I've been doing Food For Thought Saturday since I started this blog. There are any number of reasons for continuing, but I would like to ask my readers -- all six of you -- what you think about it. So, what do you think? Should it continue? Should it go back more towards matters philosophical/spiritual with more Way of the Wolf posts? Should whatever be done continue to be on the lighter side of things? Or go more serious? Let me know your thoughts, and in perusing them I may be able to figure out my own thoughts a bit better. Yes, Things Have Been Lite

And may be so a bit longer. There is a small matter of trying to do the impossible for someone at work, said impossible going from zero to new display (which is actually four different displays), nine publications, and a presence at a major trade event in less than four weeks. There is the small matter of some of the work at the lair, which has included showing the door to a contractor who took almost three months to do what should have been less than a week's worth of work (long story), verifying that another contractor who told me I needed a new heat exchanger in my furnace (at almost the price of a brand new unit) was blowing smoke, and finally being able to truly start unpacking now that some long anticipated work is done. There is... Well, you get the picture.

The good news to share is that I can now highly recommend two companies in the area: Charles Wolf Plumbing and Electric (Flora, IN) and Advanced Tech Heating and Cooling. If all contractors did as these people do...

More maybe soon.

Thank You Joe Katzman

It seems like it has been forever. It seems like it was just yesterday.

Online news sources and communities were different then, and the rise of the Blog was just beginning. To be honest, while I knew the term and perused a couple, blogs and blogging really didn't register with me that much. The rough and ready forum of Baen's Bar was a favorite stop for news, discussion, and debate. And the occasional cyber bar fight.

All that changed one morning when a story broke on about some teachers behaving very badly towards children of soldiers. My first response was to call "Bull!" I figured it would take very little to show the story was bogus, so I set out to do some real journalism. What I found is something much worse than is accepted as conventional wisdom today. Among other things I found, thankfully, that I could never qualify as a "Real Journalist" again as when the families asked that the story be dropped (they had to live there with those people, and continuing could have made things bad and put the kids in a worse position), I dropped it.

I followed the story on my own, and didn't have client. I went to the Bar and started reporting what I was finding, and John Ringo told me there was someone I should meet. A sort time later, I was e-mailing with Joe Katzman, founder and original writer for Winds of Change. Almost immediately, I found myself a proud Citizen Journalist -- living up to what I had been taught journalism ought to be -- and posting at Winds.

Joe encouraged me, taught me about this brave new world that was starting to change the face of information and information warfare, and gave the occasional good swift kick when needed. I knew of his goals for Winds, and was and am proud to have been a part. I also knew that Winds was not the place for some of what I wrote, the little stuff, the day-to-day, the humor. So, with Joe's help, I started Laughing Wolf.

It was a lot of help. My last formal programming class was Fortran IV on punch cards, and it showed. Joe helped with coding, templates, anti-spam, and continued to encourage, kick, and do. I thought it only proper to do a couple of things as a result. First, Winds of Change went to a special place at the top of my blogroll. Second, I decided to do my own take on special Saturday posts. Joe had started doing "Good News Saturdays" as a way of helping promote thought and coverage of good news. It was a day of rest, of respite of the overwhelming and relentless onslaught of negative coverage in the Old Media and even the bad news covered in the blogs. My own take was "Food For Thought" so that I could cover a complementary but different range of topics.

All things, however, must come to an end. Change blows constantly around the world, even within the world of blogs. Most especially within a site devoted to covering and encouraging those winds. I have known what was coming, but a certain sense of denial has been there too. Yet, last Saturday, Joe told the world, and pulled the plug of Good News Saturdays and his current participation in Winds.

The changes in Joe's life are good, wonderful, and right and I want to wish him and his bride-to-be all the good things in life. May the light shine on them, on the new path they walk together, and fill their new life with health, happiness, joy, love, and prosperity.

Winds will grow, change, and continue. That is the way of things, and the way Joe envisioned and worked to make happen with what I will continue to think of as his blog. So will the blogosphere, as I am but one of many for whom Joe provided assistance and encouragement. Each one of us apparently decided to emulate that, so the ranks grow and become legion. Joe's legions.

Thank you so very much, my Blogfather. This does not begin to cover it all, but it is a start. Thank you, thank you for all you have done.

The cue here should be for a sunset, but that is not right. For what you ride off into right now is not a sunset, but the sunrise of a bright new day. A new road, the right road for the two of you. May our respective roads continue to meet and parallel.

Not A Lot Today

Tired, and things are very busy at work. Spent the weekend sanding floors, and getting very annoyed with myself as I managed to mess up the floors a bit in a previous effort. In short, I frelled them up. The good news is that I do have them to the point that someone who knows what they are doing can come in and fix things and refinish them -- without it costing an arm and a leg. Carpet gone. Nails (mostly) gone. Staples gone. Super staples gone. Still mad at myself, but have to admit I tried to do too much, too fast, with too little. It can and will be fixed, meantime I can live with it and furniture and such can hide the worst. Maybe more later.

Slow(er) For A Few Days

Things progress, but between something at work and work on the lair, things may be slow. I am trying to finish up some critical painting at the new lair tonight so that I can re-do this weekend the wood floors I found under some carpeting. Problem is that I have managed to do something to my right elbow such that I have some mobility issues. Not fun, but the lair is shaping up. I do hope that my friends will stage an intervention if I ever start to do painting that requires two or more processes to do... Yes, I got fancy on some of the wall and trim painting, and am paying for it in more than one way. I also now sport a nice long scratch down most of a forearm courtesy of OSHA and ill-thought safety "features" on lawnmowers. Had to spend Tuesday evening mowing the half acre or so of lawn instead of painting and prep...

More soon.

Technical Difficulties Over?

The free wi-fi is back, at least for now. Every time we have a good thunderstorm, it goes down and guess what we have had lots of lately? More soon, ranging from Pepsico to another despicable Eason-Jordan-wannabe. And good news, too, on the new lair.

Wolf Park Visit Update

Well, I have been most remiss since I don't seem to have previously linked to Smiling Dynamite's tale of her (and Harvey's) visit to Wolf Park. As for what happened later that evening, well, let's just say it was warmer than the day and I deny all responsibility.

Open Post Saturday

I've been doing my Food for Thought Saturday for more than two years now, and decided that today I would do something a bit different. I've never done an open post before, and decided that I wanted to give it a try so that you could comment or link to fun or thoughtful things that were of interest to you. If this works, it could become a regular feature on Saturdays, and perhaps even during the week as well. It will not replace the regular effort, but simply allow a way to augment it. So, keep in mind that this is a day for good news, philosophy, and perhaps pondering all the non-negative that gets such short shrift these days. With that caveat, have at it!

I've Been Tagged

Harumph. Army Wife Toddler Mom has hit me with a rather disgusting meme. I think I would rather have had to come up with something related to this instead. Ah, well, since Saturday is to be a lite day, I guess this qualifies:

Once upon a blog so dreary, I squandered weak and teary
Over yet one more curious meme of rotten gore
Came a sqwaking and a rapping, demanding entry to the chamberpot door
Only quickly, lest it be upon the floor

Silken feathers rustling against the purple curtain
Filled me with fantastic terror, as it launched across the floor
Over it flew, my heart beating hard, as it cleared the table and the bowl
Shamless brat for evermore

Deep into the bowl it plunged, from parrot flying
As I stood with horrored countenance and swore
Damned bird who shat, with aim deceiving
Your turd, my bird, in a punchbowl splats

With apologies to Mr. Poe,

What A Delightful Surprise

Things are hectic enough on several levels that I don't get to do all I would do, from posting to reading. One of the special treats I have is reading The Gray Monk. The posts are thoughtful, well-reasoned, and beautifully presented; and, I love his travel posts. In them, I learn things even about cities or places with which I am familiar, and the places with which I am not familiar come to life in a vivid way. Imagine my surprise when yesterday I discover that my humble efforts are one of his favorite reads. I will be exploring some of his other favorites, and would urge you to do so as well. Thank you, Gray Monk!

A Wonderful Saturday

As mentioned before, Mr. Bad Example and Ms. Smiling Dynamite came to visit on Saturday despite the interesting weather. My worry was finding things for them to enjoy doing, but they seemed to like spending time out at Wolf Park a good bit. I also got them out to the Tippacanoe battlefield, to a surprise, toured around the Purdue campus (sort of), lunch at a Thai restaurant, and back out to the park. They also went home with a belated gift, that I hope was enjoyed. I still worry a bit, hoping that these two delightful people enjoyed the day as much as I did.

Anniversary And Change

Fairly close to this date two years ago, I began blogging. My blogfather, Joe Katzman, invited me to do some posts at Winds of Change on a number of topics, from the Maine Teacher Story/Scandal to the Media. I did so, and became hooked -- to the point that I opened this site. In the journalism world, the opportunity to write thought and opinion pieces is very limited. It came at a time when I could devote the resources to doing long and thoughtful pieces, and I still enjoy that and hope to have the time again soon,.

Meanwhile, life has changed much over these last two years. I have a job that prevents me from blogging during the day and between work and the start of a real life, my ability to write and post as I would like is limited. I expect things to change even more, though I hope to have a very pleasant blog surprise soon. Until then, however, my posting will be lite and perhaps even missed on a day or two. We will all just have to wait and see.

For now, I am going to be taking some time for myself. Getting to play culture vulture this weekend was a delight, and I want more. I have some friends who would like me to come up to Chicago for at least one weekend a month, and I want to do so. I have some other friends that want me to head other places, from Highland Games to some pub and restaurant crawls in various exotic locations here in the not-so-frozen North. There are some various other bits that may result in some good news to share along the way, nor is the blog the only thing to perhaps go short. I am also going to be cutting back on my time at Wolf Park, so that I can do these other things. These are all good things, for they will help bring more balance to my life.

But for now, I want to say the following:

For all of you who have read me for the last two years, thank you. You and your adherence to rational discourse have made it all worthwhile. Without you, this site could not and would not exist.

For those disappointed in the lack of posting, as well as for my regular readers, hang in there. I do have plans and look forward to getting back to doing more posts. The changes in my life should, with time and luck, help this.

For all of those who have given support, time, and encouragement -- thank you. This especially goes out to Blogfather Joe, for getting me hooked and started.

To all of you I have had the chance to meet in person, all I can say is "Wow" and that it has been a pleasure! I look forward to meeting more of you, and to getting to know some of the ones I have met much better.

Thank you all. It is not nearly enough, but it is all I can do and I say it from the bottom of my heart.

What I Feel Is Pity

I think it wants me to be mad, upset, humbled, or something else, but all I feel right now is pity. Those with good eyes may have noticed that it has returned. It being the troll, cyberstalker, or whatever other name you call it. I'm not sure what the intent of this most recent effort (or the entire long-term thing for that matter) was supposed to be, but the result is pity.

How bad must a life be that someone devotes so much time and effort, often sitting in different hotel rooms around the country, to post puerile and infantile comments? How few achievements have been obtained in life such that beating the rather rudimentary blocks I've placed becomes a thing to be celebrated? What does it say about their lack of life and mental state that they obsess over my love and sex life more than I do? What measure of self-confidence is lacking that they must post anonymously and never as themselves? How sad.

I will do the usual and contact providers as needed, but I will also do one thing different. I will say a prayer for them, and I ask you to do the same, for if doing this is so important to them and makes their life complete and filled with achievement, then prayers and good thoughts are indeed needed for them.

Blackfive's Secret Identity

Before the meeting Tuesday night took place, we all had to swear to keep the secret of Blackfive's true identity. We could not tell of the secret access at 1060 West Addison that leads to parking for Castle Blackfive, nor of the secret pedestrian exit of the Castle Transporation System down near the Chicago jail. The secret(s) were to be kept upon pain of pain.

Yet, upon more mature and sober (HA! Ed.) consideration Wednesday morning, I decided that the truth must out. For what we thought we knew was only one more bit of maskirova from the ultimate dissembler. That identity that we swore to protect is as false as the name Blackfive itself, and what lies at the heart is truly blackest blackness.

For Tuesday night, I found out that Blackfive's real identity is: Satan, or Mr. S as I now call him after the introduction. The genial facade is just that, a false front. Who else but Mr. S could have taken our brave band and forced them into gluttony at a truly tasty tappas restaurant? It was subtle, but from his perch in the corner came a spiderweb of prompts and temptations that ensured continuing rounds of tasty treats and drinks. Who else but Mr. S could have then gotten such upright people to tramp around to various bars to try yet more drinks and engage in revealing conversations? Who else would have tried to send Eric to a BDSM establishment? No, wait, that was me (and glad I am the attempt got lost in the general noise and bustle). It was Mr. S who tried to send Eric into an alternative establishment with a "Parking In Rear" sign that generated amusement. I could go on and on, but the signs are all there for those not too blind to see. After all, only Mr. S. could keep us up and out until somewhere towards 0200 hours and enjoying the process.

Oh, Eric thinks he is Mr. S, or is at least going to take the throne, but he really is a choir boy in comparison. Eric is too straightforward in his attempts, and there is no guile and subtlety in his efforts. Besides, would the real Mr. S take to carrying my briefcase (which he acted like was heavy) around on the various treks between bars on his own initiative? Would the real Mr. S be so open in talking to everyone and making sure all were having a good time? Would the real Mr. S. start chatting up the blonde on whom I had my eye at one establishment? Hmmmmmm. Maybe that one is a wash... Would the real Mr. S order a raspberry vodka martini? Eric did so, and I watched him do it. So, he is too nice to be truly evil.

From now on, when I hear the Churchlady, or do the voice, I think the line I hear/say will be "Could it be...Blackfive?"

Tuesday night was a true delight and I hope to meet up with everyone again soon. My only regret of the evening was that I did not get to spend as much time talking to everyone there. Let's see.

Wonderful is the only word to describe finally getting to meet Teresa in person. From her blog, e-mails, and conversations I knew her to be an intelligent and delightful person. It was a real pleasure to meet her and prove that pictures do not do this statuesque person justice. And I do mean statuesque in more than just the physical.

Grau was a pleasure as well, and I did not get to spend nearly as much time with him as I would have liked.

That 1 Guy was fun, and we did get to talk just a bit as we were the first to arrive at the tappas place. As with Grau, I am looking forward to getting to know him better in the days ahead.

Smiling Dynamite: What an appropriate name on so many levels. My one regret is that so much of our attempted conversations took place with high-decibel competition that limited what all we could do. All I can say is that the Gnome knows how much fun it was to meet her. More on the Gnome later.

Ah, Tammi. What can I say that is not covered by the spirit of the court order she has in place on me? A delight as always.

Oh, yeah, Harvey was there, too. *G* In all seriousness, it was enjoyable to finally meet him in person, and he is yet another with whom I did not get to spend nearly enough time.

There were phone calls with several other bloggers, including Lee Ann, Boudicca, and the wonderful Jim at Parkway Rest Stop. I am thinking there was someone else, but can't be sure at this point. More on the food later, but one of the dishes used orange mojo and brought Val to mind.

Yes, a good time was had by all, though getting up early for my first meeting of the day was not a joy. Then again, I like as close to 8 hours of sleep a night as I can get, and that did not happen. It was well worth it, however, and I am sure that some more lies descriptions will be forthcoming.

My thanks to Mr. S and all for a most wonderful evening of conviviality, discussions, and more. It was a pleasure beyond my ability to describe, and I already look forward to more.

What A Night

So far, Army 0 and Marines 1. What a night it was. Is. Not sure how to say it, but I am here in Chicago with Blackfive, Eric, Teresa, Tammi, Smiling Dynamite, That One Guy, Graumagus, and, oh, yeah, Harvey. Tappas for dinner, and a variety of entertainment afterwards. It was fun watching Tammi give Eric a run for his money on a game of pool (and he is supposed to be good?), and even more fun meeting this diverse and fun group of people. More later, if we survive. Send single malt; there seems to be a shortage for some odd reason.

Your Patience Is Appreciated

Blogging has been far too lite of late, partially because of computer concerns and mostly because of a very busy professional and personal life. Adding to the mix is the fact that several people at work, including one to whom I report, have been made aware that I blog. Whilst this is a relief on several levels, and I think will be very beneficial to both parties, there is none-the-less a degree of trepidation with such a step. Also, daytime blogging is going to be difficult since I can't readily get away to blog on my own time and equipment. So, change is in the air and adding to it is a slow start to a personal life including dinners, dates, and more. Changes including the possible purchase of a real lair, which may also play hob with posting. My hope is that in the next few weeks that I can find something that will work for me, keep you happy and intrigued, and continue the process started a couple of years ago. Thank you for your readership, your links, and for taking the time to make my site a part of your day. All, along with your patience, are appreciated.

Not just slowed down like it has of late. :) Thank you all for the kind words and good thoughts! May just have to send it to Tammi-land, where it can be friends with the bullet and keep on working.

The computer may last several months (or longer) or it may kick the bucket in a few minutes. As soon as I started making backups of current mail and projects, it decided it would be nice. Am still making full backups of all data, so that at any time it would simply be a matter of the most recent mail and such. Yet another reminder of why we all need to be making backups of computers, sites, etc. You have made yours, haven't you?

A Day Semi-Off

From blogging that is. I have loads to do today, from several loads of laundry to cooking to cleaning. I will be having company here soon, and want to make a good impression, so cleaning is high on the list. Besides, I need to get the no-fog stuff on the inside of Pup's windows too while the weather is nice.

On a side note, I've found I really like cold weather. It can be a lot of fun. Besides, it makes the picking up of fox and wolf poop much easier, along with the handling of the "trash" from the wolf's dinner. Whole road-kill deer go in, the gamey remains have to come out later and be disposed of in bags and a dumpster. There is a reason some of the laundry has some urgency to it today, and I am not looking forward to that part of it this summer.

Off to a good start on the day, with one load of laundry done; the lamb and red lentil curry (modified a bit) from this week's Carnival of the Recipes is cooking; some bacon for the next week or so is cooked and ready to be frozen; and, I may even be able to finally make the New Mexico Red Chili Sauce I've been meaning to make for a month now. Now, off to the races, since I also want to relax this evening.

It was the worst of times. All in all, however, it was a fine time this last year, as Ironbear reminds us in his own inimitable way with his Best and Worst of Blogistan 2004. It is a good list, and rather than deal with individual posts and the usual things, he focuses on the events and the drivers behind events to select his best and worst. This is well worth reading, and putting some thought into, so go do it now. My thanks to Ironbear for his kind words, and I will note he left out his own site in the conclusion, and it should be there.

Val Is Over The Edge

Yep, I fear my friend and buddy Val has lost it with efforts like this and this to try and gather votes for the Weblog Awards.

Val, if you really want to inspire voters like myself, start with efforts like this and go better from there. You know what I mean by better too...

Also, keep writing posts like this one and you are guaranteed to blow the opposition out of the water.

Folks, help him out. Let's bring him back, and the way to do that is to go vote for him so he can win and put this behind him.

Spammers Damage The Environment

As if trying to fill our comments with their ads, causing systems to drop, and all the other havoc were not bad enough, now we have this news: They also damage the ecosystem. The TLB Ecosystem that is. Read about the environmental impact they have, and while you are at it take the time to thank N. Z. Bear for all the fine work he does as well.

2004 Weblog Awards

While I am disappointed that several I nominated did not make it, here is my take on the categories in which I voted. If I was not familiar with any of the blogs in a category, I did not vote, nor did I vote if I did not like any of the choices in a catetgory. Several were very, very hard choices. Thanks to the childishness of some, you do have to go to some effort to vote, but it is worth it for a fair election.

Best Overall Blog: Instapundit
Best New Blog: My Pet Jawa
Best Group Blog: Hog On Ice
Best Conservative Blog: Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler
Best Election Coverage: The Command Post
Best Media/Journalist Blog: Michelle Malkin
Best Culture Blog: A Small Victory
Best Military Blog: Sgt. Hook
Best Blog Design: Cold Fury
Best (and most missed) Essayist: USS Clueless
Best Canadian Blog: Being American In T.O.
Best UK Blog: Samizdata
Best European Blog: The Dissident Frogman
Best Australian or New Zealand Blog: Chrenkoff
Best Latino, Caribbean, or South American Blog: Babalu Blog
Best of the Top 100: Politburo Dikat
Best of 100-250: Bad Example
Best of 250-500: On The Third Hand
Best of 1,000-1,750: Boudicca’s Voice
Best of 3,500-5,000: Chapomatic

Please note that no bribes were offered or accepted for any of these, darn it. Cash and female human companionship are the best bribes (non-human female companionship provided by a very jealous temporary boss Clara). Go vote, and if you have time and high-speed, check out the blogs with which you are not familiar, for there are many good ones there.

Breakfast With Tammi And Her Mom

What a great way to start the day: Breakfast with Tammi and her Mom. Her Mom is delightful, and it was a pleasure to meet such a wonderful lady. We had a great time, talked, had a tale or two told on Tammi, and with some regret parted ways so that they could get home by a reasonable hour. Maybe some more later, but a good thing or three is taking place and taking my time for now. More soon.

Once again, I want to thank and highly recommend Kathy Kinsley of On The Third Hand for her help. In the continuing battle against thrice-damned-and-needing-of-unusual-punishment-spammers, she has upgraded my site to include a comment preview function that seems to be hurting them. Her previous upgrade did a lot, and this is helping even more. She does outstanding design work without theatrics, good support and technical work, and you always get more than you pay for. Breakfast With Tammi

This morning has been a delight because I had breakfast with the delightful Tammi of Road Warrior Rules. We had planned to have dinner last night, but work and other delights postponed her arrival, so we decided instead to have breakfast. That proved to be a good choice, as we caught up and I am sure she got on the road with a good meal, some good coffee, and before the worst of the weather hit. The latter is a large worry for me. No, I am not worried about her ability to handle it or the state of her vehicle (good) but because of all idiots less capable drivers out there.

It was good to see her again and to catch up a bit on life and blogging. Tammi was also very happy with our table, which had her back to a roaring fire – something about not liking the cold, which it was not. Our hope is for a longer visit on her way back down, so we can catch up on all we did not get to today.

In short, a very pleasurable morning that neither storms nor power outages (Laptop 1; UPS 1; power failure 0) can diminish.

A Thought In Regards Comment Spammers

I’ve just spent 15 precious minutes of my day dealing with spam that got past Blacklist. They are finding ways to defeat it, ways that mean I have to go through almost every spam comment and delete it individually. Add to this the fact that the new temporary lair is very nice and I enjoy it, but it also has no DSL or high-speed so I am on dial-up. The time it takes to deal with them is the time I had set aside for writing, so that may not happen today.

The sudden surge in spam comments is bad not just for me, but for a number of other bloggers I know. If it continues, I will have to discontinue comments.

This is not something I want to do, as comments are an essential part of this site and of rational discourse. It makes the site, and my day, to get good and thoughtful comments back. There are other ways to defeat the spam, such as a Turing test or some such, but right now I flat out can’t afford to add that.

Though a rational pacifist, I am fast reaching the point where I don’t see prosecution of the spammers as the answer. In fact, I am leaning towards going very medieval on them, dumping the parts in a crossroad, hearts destroyed, salt in their mouths, and one final thing done. Rather than their head upon a pike, I think it should be the literal part displayed to the world that matches the figurative shown to the world online. Nor do I think the pike should go in the usual place, but to leave such for whatever may come. Think rigid catheter folks.

Perhaps one or two such displays might deter many more.

LW

PS: Forgot to mention that in the best tradition, the "mounting" should take place at the start of the festivities, so that the spammer can enjoy it too...

A Friend Indeed, In Need

Many have noted the absence of the Emperor of late, but now Misha opens up. Idiotarians hate him, but he has been a good friend to many of us -- rumor has it even to some of his critics, which speaks volumes. Trolls, go away. Those with souls, go offer some support. He has supported and encouraged many, public and private, so the least we can do is return the favor when as the foundations of his world shift around him.

I have returned. I spent most of the last week near Vienna, and had a wonderful time. It was a business trip, but extremely nice all the same. Among other things, I was literally given keys to the facility and 24-hour access to the research library among other places. Posting may be light today as I was up 23 hours yesterday with travel and had to get up early this morning to deal with various letters and communications that needed to be sent or answered. If any of you have e-mailed me in the last week and a half, please be patient. I did not have net capability for most of that time, and must confess I did not miss it all that much (nor television, to be honest), not nearly as much as I miss all the good coffee this morning. Ice Cream Shortage Continues

Panic does not grip the nation as the Free Ice Cream shortage continues. The last few days have been filled with some good things, and a schedule that has been so hectic that I have not even had the time to make a pot of coffee or tea the last two days, or today for that matter. I almost feel guilty taking time to cook and eat breakfast... The only bright spot is that I have had time for they gym, and am finally starting to get back into the groove. Have not been there since a problem a couple of months ago, so am glad to be back. Hope to be back to burning 3000 calories a session within a month.

Right now, the largest story out there is the Old Media dropping any pretense at being objective. The complete abrogation of the principles of journalism is a far bigger story than current politicians, and I am working on something in relation to this story and the reaction to it, which starts right here. Right now, the words "willful endangerment" ring in my mind in regards NPR and I sincerely hope that this was not the cause of all of My Wars archives being pulled. I am also less than happy that Sgt. Hook is down.

On other fronts, I HIGHLY recommend you go here and watch "The Only Thing" as it is well worth doing. Also, go check out the latest from Ironbear which includes yet more on the true SA goons and fascists around. It is indeed interesting to see how the loons view anyone who disagrees with them, and how they feel that such people should be dealt with. They are welcome to try that, but had better bring lots of friends as I suspect that it will take at least one hundred of them to take on any one of "the opposition." Just a hunch.

More soon, I hope.

Yesterday’s thanks reminded me that I had failed to link to a post with which I have a lot of agreement. I meant to do this sooner, before the Commissar was sent to the Gulag for re-education, but the move and other joys got in the way.

Farewell To Tim And Capt. Patti

Sir,

I understand your reasons very well, but I must dispute one supposition of yours most strongly. You state in your wonderful farewell post that “My departure will not appreciably affect the blogosphere in any way.” On this point you are most sadly mistaken, for your departure will remove a voice of reason, of civility, of rational discourse, and of responsibility. I have no doubt that your departure will indeed have a large effect upon the world of you and Patti, for the best, and you would indeed be a fool not to devote your time and energies to that world. Yet, the world of the blogosphere is indeed diminished by your departure. I do wish you both the best in all things.

Yesterday, I gave myself something of a break. Did some packing, and may redo part of it yet again (meat slicer is difficult to fit in most standard boxes), but spent most of the day working on a book. Yep, Steve H. has inspired me and I am working on two books that I plan to offer. One is my take on cooking, including some recipes and various things from the site. The other, the one I got to work on yesterday, is more a philosophy book. What I am doing is taking my Way of the Wolf posts, combining them, and expanding them. So get on over to IMAO and get in line for the paddle! Blackfive asks everyone to list their favorite post, but I am unable to comply. The problem is, there have been so many good posts I can’t possibly choose one favorite. I will admit a strong liking for any post featuring Chomps, Buck, or the Rumsfeld Strangler. There, it is done. Frank, call back the ninja monkeys now…

No, It Was Not A Computer Problem

Just a day devoted to moving preparations and routine maintenance and backup. Well, not as routine as it should be and it was so much fun dealing with recalcitrant software that wasted a lot of time. The compression program labored for hours on a relatively small file as such things go, only to proudly tell me “ah, yup, yup, yup, hee hee hee, I saved you a whole thirteen percent space, duhhhhhhhhhhh” In real life with a real employee, this is grounds for termination with cause, if not outright termination (You spent a full work day just doing one game of tic tac toe?! Ka-Snick). Fortunately, I was much more productively occupied, and likely will be again today. The other good news is that the full backup was completed despite the software (and the bad news is that I was reminded that I really, really, need 1-2 new external hard drives in excess of 60Gb each) along with the first round of CD/DVD backups. More later when and if I can, as I try to meet the impossible goal of being almost completely packed by Sunday. BTW, more stuff will be added today to the online yard and moving sale.

Little Free Ice Cream Today

Doing computer maintenance, packing, and other joys of moving. I have added yet more to the yard sale and am a bit surprised no one has moved at all on the oak bookcases. Keep checking, as the items change on an almost daily basis. There is some Mac computer stuff there as well now, along with some "antique" photo gear from the pre-digital age. :) More later when and if I get the computer backup and compression software to cooperate a bit more.

The Bad News Is Power Failure

A large one according to the good folks at the power company, or at least that is what their recorded message says. The good news is that the power has been out long enough for me to figure out a problem in the UPS chain. The other bad news is that the UPS/battery back up that powers the answering machine has an audible that can’t be turned off. I’ve decided I can live without the answering machine for now, and may do some surgery later. Think I am going to go back to bed for now, posting may be light today…

Commercial Space, The Draft, And More

Things are hectic here right now, so I don’t have time to do justice to several topics I want to cover. So, allow me to point to some good discussions elsewhere.

While I am not at all impressed with the 9-11 commission so far (side note, read this), I am a bit more impressed with the Aldridge Commission. I haven’t had the time to look at a lot, but do see some cause for optimism there. Rocket Forge and Transterrestrial Musings have good coverage here, here, here, here, here, and here, Another hopeful sign is noted here.

Today is Blackfive’s One Year Blogversary! Go wish him a good one.

Baldilocks and Citizen Smash take on the draft non-story.

Don’t forget Operation Shoe Fly.

Just go read the last three days worth at Winds of Change.

This is worth taking the time to read.

There is more, but time is short. Go read, and enjoy.

I’ve been trying to get one of those favicons up and running on the site, but for the life of me can’t get it to work. Yet Another Attack On Free Speech

It should come as no surprise that the most recent assault on free speech by some dickless nazi wannabe was not from the evil Bushitler empire. It seems that someone did not like having the lies, misstatements, distortions, and other delights of the fictitious floating fat man exposed for all the world to see at Moorewatch. So, this aspiring Hitler launched a Denial of Service attack against the server, in the process taking down Right Thinking From The Left Coast and Right Thoughts. Yes, this does explain Jim’s absence from the Blogosphere.

In order to keep all these sites up, Jim needs your help. Go on over, visit, help out, and in the process maybe help educate some of the clueless and brainless about Free Speech and ensure that it lives despite terrorists and other fascists.

Blogmeet With Tammi

The first part of the family business took me to Central Georgia, where I was able to meet up with Tammi, of Road Warrior Rules for Survival. The plans had been a bit iffy, to be polite, on my end because of all that is going on. For this reason, I had not mentioned it and was scared that anything I did might jinx it. In the end, it all worked out and we met for dinner at Polly’s Café in Macon last Thursday night. She herself is nice, her steak looked delicious (I declined to get my hands anywhere near for safety), and my fried oysters were delicious. We then proceeded to get her settled into the wonderful B&B she had found and me into a hotel room.

As a quick note to Momma Bear, since a swipe from an angry Momma Bear is something that even the most ferocious wolf cares to avoid, I tried to be very good about the arm. Just ask Tammi, I did try (am very trying?).

A Quick Update

Am on a very interesting dial up from the mountains, so this will be brief with more to come soon.

Had a wonderful meeting with the delightful Tammi of Road Warrior Rules For Survival.

Am currently in N. Georgia on some personal business that has gone well. The English Werewolf and Borzoi joined me for part of the time, and I have been exceedingly cruel to them feeding them camp food of fresh grilled scallops, eggs with saffron Buerre Blanc sauce, and whole roasted tenderloin. Sophie and Heathcliff appreciated the scallop and tenderloin puppy treats. Have also managed to do two pork roasts (one stuffed with herbed goat cheese and the other with cheese and mushrooms) and a boneless leg of lamb.

Am headed shortly to Atlanta for yet more business.

Have responded to a comment from someone who either does not know history or is a troll. Maybe both.

More to come soon.

I have learned a number of things, and will share some or most of them with you. I have been thinking about some things, and once I can get those thoughts coherent they will be shared. Some of the dreams and waking dreams I’ve had whilst on medication, are not likely to be shared. Steaks, rare or raw, very much appreciated as the appetite is good. One More Random Thought For The Day

Before the shoes began to drop on Monday, I had planned to go do some visiting in the next couple of months. I’ve talked with a blogger or three about visiting, and received some very nice words of encouragement. I think, however, that I want to get a bit of dishonesty off my chest, just to be safe you understand.

It really isn’t the bloggers I want to meet, it is the pets. I mean, I want to eat Steve’s food and drink his beer, but it is really Marv I want to meet. Meeting Lileks would be great, but it is Jasper – fellow canine – with whom I would like to spend some time. I would love to be out helping Citizen Smash with his rally this weekend, but truth be told the time might be better spent with Tori.

There are more, and I would like to meet them all. May that happen in the future, but for now I just had to get that off my chest.

NOTE: No, I haven’t talked with all of these, this is just the start of a wish list…

You Know You Are Blogging Too Much When

You are watching the TV listings scroll by and see Wiggles on a kids network, and wonder what the Chief is up to; you see Smash Hits of Country and think to yourself that you did not know Citizen/Lt. Smash was a country music fan.

Under the evil influence of vidweasel Waldo, who vids shows and more, you catch yourself thinking that 10,000 Maniacs Candy (Give ‘Em What They Want) would make a great video about blogging, with Cardinal Puppilieu’s trademark “heh” flashing up when “Hey/heh” comes up in the song.

You are in a meeting with someone who says something interesting/stupid/etc. and think “I need to blog this.”

Yep, time for that intervention…

What Hath Blogs Wrought?

Yesterday’s interview with People Magazine derailed what I had planned for today, and set in motion an entirely new train of thought. The more I thought about the article, the less I care for the idea behind it. That idea being, ultimately, what amounts to an attack on blogging.

People Magazine Just Called

In the news of the weird department, I was just interviewed by Eric Francis of People Magazine for a story on bloggers. The focus seems to be on those that have had problems, and I don’t seem to qualify. Don’t know when or if the story will run, or if I will be in it or not, but it was different and fun.

It also reminds me that I need to thank you, my readers, yet again. The reason I have not had anything bad happen because of the blog is because of the quality that YOU bring to it. Most of the people who come here, and pretty much all the regulars, seem to abide by the rules and join in with the spirit of rational discourse. For that, and for your patronage, I thank you.

When You Are In A Rush

Which blogs do you check?

A while back, Jay Solo posed this question as a form of turn-around Friday Five, and listed the five blogs he checked when things were hectic. It got me to thinking, and I realized that I did not check five, but three. Given how hectic things have been here at the lair of late, I have not had the time to read and surf as I would like. The blogs I check for a quick idea of what is going on and what is important are: On The Third Hand; Cardinal Puppileu; and, Winds of Change. Each provides nice summaries of important issues, some good discussion, and pointers towards more in-depth coverage. I have a longer list of secondary sites, but I have to admit that these are my must-checks each day.

So, how many and which ones are on your must check list?

Changes To The Blogroll

Yes, you do indeed see some changes there. I have put it into something similar to alphabetical order, with a couple of exceptions. First, Winds of Change and my blogfather Joe Katzman will always be at the top. This is followed by Front Line Voices and the Blogger Alliance, since I feel they rate extra special mention. Hopefully, all this will allow people to find sites easier.

I am also adding some people to the roll. It is a pleasure to add Teresa and Technicalities, of delightful e-mail, comments, and posting to the roll. A belated addition is Baldilocks, who’s attitude and commentary I enjoy. I have added Galen’s Log for its commentary and because we needed a medical viewpoint on things. I have also added Cecile DuBois/Sky Watching My World because I see a lot of talent and potential there, and want to encourage and support that. Especially given what all has been going on of late. Many or all of these are also being added because of the posts they have made on other sites. Some other additions include Rocket Man, another space commentator; Live From Brussels; The Dissident Frogman; and, Merde In France.

There will probably be some other additions and changes soon, as I get the chance to catch up on things.

Rational, thoughtful, informative, and fun comments are welcome. Go off on tirades, violate rules of discourse, be abusive, or otherwise fail the test and the comment will be deleted and the poster banned. If things get to be a problem again, comments will go away again. I hope to keep them open, though, as you have all proven to be remarkable and responsible, and I want to do all I can to encourage civil discourse.

Vote Laughing Wolf For D-Day!

Well, it appears that I am locked in a three-way race for D-Day with Citizen Smash and Cold Fury Mike. While I figure that I don’t have a snowball’s chance against Smash, I do want to make it a fight so I am asking for your help. Please click here and at the second paragraph, click the e-mail link (or just send an e-mail to blackfiveATsbcglobalDOTnet) with the following slate of candidates:

D-Day: The Laughing Wolf
Bluto: Emperor Misha I
Boon: Stephen Green, VodkaPundit
Robert Hoover: Joe Katzman, Winds of Change
Flounder: Moe Freedman, Occam’s Toothbrush
Otter: Citizen Smash
Clorette DePasto: Da Goddess
Mandy Pepperidge: Glenn Reynolds, InstaPundit
Katy: Venemous Kate
Greg Marmalard: Andrew Sullivan

I don’t know who started the effort to make InstaPundit Mandy, but I like it. Love Joe’s suggestion of Andrew as Greg, so will second it here. Citizen Smash put himself up for Otter, and I shall not argue with him – especially if it gives me a better shot at the D-Day role.

Thanks for your time and help on this.

Vote For Me! Laughing Wolf Is D-Day

Okay, I wrote about it earlier, but now it is time to get serious. Blackfive, the Paratrooper of Love, is casting Animal House with bloggers.

I am asking one and all to go to his site and e-mail him the following slate:

D-Day: The Laughing Wolf
Robert Hoover: Joe Katzman, Winds of Change
Greg Marmalard: Glenn Reynolds, InstaPundit

Most people seem to be putting Glenn in for the pot-smoking professor, but I think that is too obvious. Besides, I can see him choking the stuffing out of a puppy, muttering "but they're getting better known on space than I am..."

So, please, go send in your e-mails. Push the slate, and most of all, please put me in for D-Day.

So Much For Cafe Press

When Allah gets hit by a wierd form of PC, you know the times are truly strange. It seems the folks at Cafe Press have a problem with his products, and have pulled them for being potentially offensive. Go, check out his items and then check out the KKK merchandise, Nazi Cola, and other "inoffensive" items upheld by Cafe Press.

I was looking into doing something with them, but will now explore other options. The largest problem I have had is in getting a logo done, since drawing is not my forte and the bank account won't support the hiring of an artist. My question to you is, would you buy something that just had words?

Beginning To Believe

That I have a breach of security. There have been some strange activity showing up on the modem when there should be no activity; DSL has slowed down tremendously; settings change, particularly in Word; and there are other signs. Standard sweeps detect no infections, but I am growing increasingly suspicious that someone, somehow, has managed to get a Trojan or spyware into the system. I find this most annoying…

Sorry For the Lite

I had wanted to do more today, but am scrambling and fumbling a bit instead. One of the jobs/work I was pursuing in Atlanta did not come through, so this has me both a bit down and scrambling trying to find other work. That is an ongoing process in many ways, but especially crucial right now.

It has also brought on a bit of introspection. I no longer enjoy a lot of what I used to do, and for whom I used to do it. Journalism as practiced in the Old Media is a crock, and I much prefer the work I do here. A good bit of standard science writing is not terribly fulfilling, adding to some of the thought. Change is nice, change is good, and I am giving a good bit of thought to what changes will be best for me in my life.

Stay tuned. If I ever figure it out, you may be among the first to know. If you figure it out, please let me know and also let me know if you find my attention scampering around out there somewhere.

A Non-Random Thought For A Friday

I had planned this morning to do a post of some random thoughts, touching on a number of different topics. I was going to have some fun with His Rottiness using actress Mischa Barton as the foil, I was going to touch on some topics and posts I’ve seen, and lay a bit of groundwork for a new media/commentator post that is percolating its way through the twisty corridors of what passes for my mind.

I may still do those one day soon, but instead I want to offer a non-random thought, and two very serious offers. It seems that in discussions by The Most Annoying Right Wing Blogger and Blackfive, that some of the far left managed to twist something said into a death threat. Having reviewed some of the material, it was a stretch but it was done. The problem is, that someone then decided to issue a real death threat.

The matter stems from the despicable ad developed for the Kucinich campaign by Eric Blumrich. Dissent is a thing not just to be tolerated in a free and open society, it is – within certain parameters – a thing to be actively encouraged. Some of the parameters are quite clear and involve such things as constitutional law and actual case law.

Now, I am not one to go around using the terms traitor or traitorous, because I think that there are very clear definitions of same and I detest anyone who calls anyone who disagrees with them in any way a traitor. The far left is the best at this, though they rarely use the terms in connection with the U.S. Government, but instead with their dogma. The far right is also far too much in love with the term, for similar reasons.

That said, there is a difference between giving active aid and comfort to our enemies in time of war, and rational and reasoned dissent. That line has been crossed far too many times of late, by people who immediately throw up the “you can’t question our loyalty, we are only exercising our free speech” defense. Well, it is a bogus defense consisting of a doozy of a logical fallacy. The fact is, yes, I can. Yes, I should. Anyone on any side should be examined, especially when they start wrapping themselves up this way.

The ad in question uses our dead soldiers in a way that is disrespectful to them, to their families, and to their comrades. It is an appalling misuse of names and imagery, giving - to my mind - the false impression that such is being done with permission and concurrence of those listed. It is an abuse of many things, and an abomination of which Eric and others involved should be heartily ashamed. One wonders what the families and comrades of those used without permission would think. One wonders if Eric and the others involved ever bothered to truly think about what they were doing, to truly consider the feelings and rights of those soldiers and their families. I rather doubt it, given all I have read, and that is where the true shame lies.

To my mind, the ad violates every cannon of decency, good taste, and possibly even law in terms of the use of private names and images. It is a violation of respect for our troops, which Eric and company appear not to have from anything I have seen. It is an abomination and an affront to any rational person of any political persuasion. To my mind, it does appear to offer aid and comfort to the enemy, by calling for an immediate end to the War on Terror – for that is the ultimate message of the piece once you strip it to its logical framework and dispense with the frippery. Yes, there is free speech, but that does not mean complete freedom from consequences of said speech.

The problem for today, however, is that some supporter of the ad and of Eric Blumrich has issued a real death threat over the matter. It seems that Eric and his friends don’t like what is being said or that anyone would question them in any way. So, this wonderfully brave soul, as part of a campaign to put a person’s name, home address, and other information out on the net, has issued a real threat against the life of Blackfive.

My concern is that most people who would do something like this rarely have the balls to come out and do something face-to-face. In fact, in a number of cases (go do the research) they either opt for an assassin-style attack or go after the family of the person, the soft targets. I trust that this will not be the case here, but I am concerned enough to make the following two offers.

First, Blackfive has called the person out. If they, male or female, are a man in any sense of the word, they need to stand up, step forward, and deal with this as a man. I doubt they will, but should they do so and should this go to the field of honor, I would like Blackfive to know that I would be most willing to stand second to him. Dueling and personal responsibility are topics for another day, but I am most serious about this. I realize that he probably has a number of people for this, but I did want to make the offer.

Second, should Blackfive have any concerns for his family, I am willing to call a few friends and see about providing a squad for their protection. While it is not on my resume or vita, I have helped provide security to people with death threats. Another thing not on my resume is that while I have never worn the uniform of my country, I have held military expert ratings, issued by the military, with a number of weapons. I can and will ensure the safety of those I choose to protect, unto my life.

Someone has stepped over a very serious line here, and it was not Blackfive or Misha. I hope that the full weight of the law, and the world, drop in on them like a ton of bricks. Such behavior, like getting a blogger fired over a spat, is beyond childish and must not be tolerated by any mature and civilized person.

This Is Turning Into A Really Good Day

Things look good for meeting the deadline on four stories I am writing, and I am really enjoying working with one of the scientists involved. I also have managed to get off an application from Hades this morning, one that has taken several days of hard work and the help of someone familiar with the process. Now, if I can just get caught up on some letters I need to be writing, all will be very good from a writing standpoint.

My day has also been brightened by a very unexpected honor. I have not been paying attention to the blog and blogging as I should, with the result being I missed a few things. One of them was my being given a link by Steven Den Beste at USS Clueless. This means a great deal to me, as I regard him as one of the best philosophical writers today. More than a polemicist, he takes the time to dissect a subject with a skill and with the supporting facts and documentation that make true rational discourse possible. There is a reason he and his Essential Library have been near the top of my link list since I started.

I also just found out that Michael Mealling submitted my letter to the President to the Carnival of the Capitalists. This is a good showcase, and I am glad to finally have something in it. Thank you, Michael!

In checking links, I also found that Who Tends The Fires liked my idea for Food For Thought Saturday and has adapted it for their site. This is great, and the more people doing this, the better, though I will point out that the Sufi is my Blogfather Joe rather than me. I tend toward Way of the Wolf, and look to all: be it Sufi, Tao, or other. I also found out that Ironbear has posted something there that relates a bit to my post on Rational Pacifism and Responsibility. I really do need to do a better job on the mail... Thanks Ironbear.

There may be some other thanks and good news, and I hope I get the chance to follow-up on them today. To all of you who link to me, and most of all to all of you who read me, let me just say:

Thank You

A Day Late, Dollar Short

Sorry for the delay, but three things have conspired. First, I was under the weather most of this week, and am still not 100 percent. Second, I am out of town to be with a friend who -- as usual -- did a great job on something, which unfortunately this time was a concussion. Third, I am on dial-up with a not too great connection. I miss DSL...

DSL Blues Gone?

In the brief time I was home last week, I had a problem that was no fun at all for the digitally addicted: My DSL died. No real warning, no nothing. Just no DSL.

I tried all the things you are supposed to do, and finally called Earthlink tech support. The first person I got was friendly and we went through yet more steps. It finally ended with him thinking it might be something on their end, or a software problem on mine, but unable to do anything including log my call properly because the needed database was down. So, I called back in an hour and talked to another person and we had to do it all again because it wasn’t logged and did a few new things as well. He was convinced that it was the cables, so off to the computer store I went to get new cables. Still no joy. I finally gave up because I needed to leave for Knoxville. So, I pulled the plug on the modem and left.

When I got back, I powered the modem back up along with the laptop, and lo and behold there it was working perfectly. Which leads me to think that there may be a problem with the modem itself, or that there was a problem on the other end at Earthlink. Whatever it is, I am glad to have DSL back up and am now trying to catch up. And hoping the DSL stays up.

Attacks, Attacks

No, not referring to Iraq but to the net and blogs. Today we face yet another attack from the Sun, with a solar storm/coronal mass discharge scheduled to hit the Earth today. After Friday’s event, I lost DSL for a while so am not looking forward to today.

Also, the too-tight-turban crowd appears to be planning another DDOS attack against Internet Haganah at the old address. This means that Hosting Matters could go down again, especially if those upstream (Hint, bloody Hint AT&T!) don’t remove their collective thumbs from certain orifices and join in the fight. Meantime, go support IH with a donation or three.

On an interesting note, after the page in question got posted at Evil Cardinal Puppilieu, it has gone to password protection to keep people out. Neat, and shows that they are aware that people are watching. Just hope the hackers had enough time to get some good info on the crackers…

If things do go down here and elsewhere, remember to go to InstaWolf (http://instawolf.blogspot.com) where I will post and where I have a listing of emergency backup sites for several blogs.

The next few days may be a bit sparse, as I have had the opportunity suddenly arise for me to take part in the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing New Horizons In Science Briefing. This is being held in Knoxville, home of the Evil Cardinal Pupplylieu, and it would not break my heart if I were to bump into him. No, Frank, not with a car. Halfway expect to see him Sunday as most of the day is devoted to nanotech and proteomics. Good opportunity for me to build on some hands-on work with MEMS and nano I got to do a few years ago at Cornell. I will blog when and if I can, but no promises.

Some Thoughts for The New Media

Yesterday’s DDOS attacks have brought a number of things to light for this wonderful new media known as the blogosphere. The most obvious is, of course, exactly how vulnerable we are to disruption. What also came to the fore is that we face other challenges as well, challenges to free speech and hosting that take trial to reveal. There are other topics, but these will do for a good start.

Welcome Back!

Now that the cowardly attack by the pork-eating, sheep-humping terrorists is being dealt with a bit, the site is back up. Because this is the third time recently that the kiddies actually came out from behind their women's skirts to do this, I have set up an emergency backup blog. InstaWolf is an idea cheerfully stolen from the evil Cardinal Puppylieu and one that works.

I am also compiling a list of other emergency backup blogs and already have Pejman, Little Tiny Lies, and a couple of others up. If you have a mirror or emergency site, leave it in the comments below and I will see about adding it to the list. I do reserve the right to reject (and inject), but want to get this done as a bit of community service.

I Am Back

Things will be slow at the start, but I have rested a bit, recharged, and taken a break from all things electronic. No television since Friday morning, no radio, no computer, no newspapers – and I loved it. The electronic DTs never did kick fully in, and I can tell the evil Cardinal Puppylieu that intervention might be fun. It was for me, as I got to spend time with a new acquaintance looking at leaves, then worked on a rock wall, hiked around a bit, dealt with some property issues and worked to encourage sale of a lot of mountain property, and also sat on a porch and watched the world go by. You know you need this when you go to sleep at 2030 hours (8:30 pm) and don’t wake up until 0715 (figure it out) the next morning.

I was adopted by a neighbor’s dogs for the trip, who were my companions and protectors even when I did not want protection. They were not bad for the most part, though my acquaintance and I had to mount an armed guard on the grill Saturday night while cooking the steaks.

The rock wall is actually a move and rebuild. I built it the first time about 20 years ago, but fire trucks, logging trucks, and careening relatives took a toll. We needed to change the drive a bit anyway, so I have moved it to a temporary location to let my Aunt look at it and check it out. If a go, I will take down and re-do right. The idea behind this technique is that you use the rock as is, only minor reshaping if any, and piece the wall together like a jigsaw puzzle. Once all is in place, it is strong and secure. Getting to that point can be interesting, however. To make it more of a challenge, the front and back use flat rock that are put in place vertically, so no cheating and laying everything flat. You fill with other rock, dirt, and use that to link it all together. Yes, I am sick in that to me this is fun, not work. Lots of hard labor, yes, but not work.

I almost stayed another day, but needed to get back to take care of some things. So, stay tuned as I am back and do have some posts to try to get done amidst all the “real” work that has come my way.

Sorry for the lite posting, but I have been busy. The good news is that I finished the rough of one job, and primed on another, and even made up a gallon or two of New Mexico red sauce (hot and mild chilies) for use in carne adobava and such. The latter did not take long, but was interesting – and fun. Still have about eight pounds of dried chilies to use over the next several months, so more sauce is to come. Hopefully, some more posts of substance are to come as well. Let me highly recommend you check out the Monday Cul-de-Sac on Suburban Blight, as it is always a good collection of links and food or nibbles for thought.

He's Everywhere, He's Everywhere!

Was just over at the local university library doing some research for some encyclopedia articles I am writing, when what to my wondering eyes did appear? But an article by Glenn Reynolds, the Instapundit, that ties into the topic at hand. I think it is the one he keeps mentioning repeatedly in his blog, and I am actually going to try to get it and read it. The library, alas, has a somewhat miserable periodicals collection, but I must admit that it is better than the local public library. I think I know who may have a copy, now to see what the price will be to borrow it.

Hurricane Blogging

Keep on checking Tobacco Road Fogey for his updates. I admit, I had despaired for him of late, as he had not posted much in quite some time. When he does, he sure does make up for the absences.

For other hurricane bloggers, go to On The Third Hand, where Momma Bear is doing her usual excellent work with a nice list of bloggers. The only one I think she missed is Lt. Cmdr. Smash, who left the sandbox to come home and play in a hurricane, and with two hurricanes known as his nephews. Sort of reminds me of my godsons.

To all: Be safe, be careful, and enjoy it as much as one can.

CoTV Is Up

And it is a special one this week, since the founder is hosting. While my own entry was inadvertantly omitted, there are a LOT of good posts there. So, what are you waiting for? Go on, get over there and start reading. And take a minute to thank him for getting this wonderful showcase started. Next week's CoTV will be at Pathetic Earthlings.

An Overdue Blogroll Addition: Jay Solo

I've been meaning to do this for some time, and decided it was way overdue. Go check out an interesting and fun site that is well worth the read. Jay also provides some of the best comments on other sites as well, and by that has been a good steer towards thoughtful discussions. Jay, sorry it took so long.

Forget Gary The Rat, InstaPundit is Richelieu!

I meant to note this on over the weekend, but failed. Yet, it is a masterstroke worthy of the shifty cardinal himself. InstaPundit joined the alliance against himself. Yep, go check it out, he did. Sheer genius, and very scary. As for me, I need to go to the library this week and see if I can find any mention of Richelieu liking puppy shakes…

Lite Posting Today

I am trying to get back to the “regular” schedule I had for a while of lite posting on the weekend. Today it is needed because it has turned into a cooking and cleaning day. I have to cook up several pounds of sausage and freeze it (after spicing it up a bit); grind some beef; smoke and cut up a pork roast and then slow cook carne asada; and smoke a couple of racks of ribs. Also have to get ready for the rescue mission to come in the morning to pick some stuff up. So, don’t expect a lot today. Tomorrow should be better, promise.

Sorry To Be Away So Long

Of course, some out there may have wished for longer, but…

Life has been interesting, in very good ways, but it has been extremely hectic as well. As stated earlier, I did finally get the wheelock firearms piece in to Military History despite some missing reference works and similar delights. I am now waiting to hear back from them that it was acceptable, etc. This week is going to be incredibly busy as well, as I have both a major bid to do and some encyclopedia entries on which I need to get cracking. The pay is lousy on the latter, but it should be fun and I need the clips. The fact is that the work I did for NASA meant I could not freelance during that time (no time), so I am having to re-establish my “chops” with magazines and such.

Sorry, No Way Today

On several fronts. It is 0130 local time and I have to be up at about 0630, and work all day. So no Way of the Wolf today, but I will try to make it up to you soon.

There is some news to share, but that too will wait. :)

Meantime, all of you be safe, have fun, and enjoy the holiday weekend!

Slow Time

Not much time to do much today, my apologies. There is a lot going on, so check the news, tune in Winds of Change and keep informed.

The good news is that I have turned in a story on wheelock firearms to a magazine, am now gearing up to do a number of encyclopedia entries, and will be working all weekend at the restaurant.

Take care, enjoy the weekend, and be safe.

Instapundit = Gary The Rat?

Okay, I come home the other night and am getting to watch the late rerun of Gary the Rat on Spike. One advantage to working at the restaurant is coming home late and seeing all the shows that are normally on well past my bedtime.

Now, I admit that working two full-time jobs has been a bit stressful, and that working in a hot kitchen during a heat wave, sometimes in front of a red hot grill, has added to it. So, my mind was wandering strange and interesting paths late at night. Strange enough that I began to consider that Gary the Rat might be some form of alliteration of Glenn Reynolds. I could even sworn that I heard Gary say "Heh" once, but at that point in my sleep depravation cycle it could have been the bedside lamp. Still, I wonder, could it be? Could the Instapundit be an inspiration for Gary the Rat? Only time will tell...

Proof? Or another sleep depravation nightmare?

An Apology And An Explanation

Things have been a little lite of late, and I want to apologize for that. I do know that I have not written as much as normal, and I also know that I have not written on many issues and subjects that deserve attention.

The problem has been that I have suddenly developed two full-time jobs. I have my writing and related work, which though slow is picking up. This weekend, I have to finish a piece on wheelock firearms for a magazine in addition to all the other things on the to-do list. There are some other possibilities looming, and I am do very much hope that they manifest and soon. Being busy earning money is a good thing.

Business WWW Site Is Up

My professional WWW site is now up and running. I want to thank those who sent in comments, particularly Sapper Mike who had some real good ones. My Blogfather has been most patient with some of my questions and whining as well. Check it out, and let me know what you like or if there is a problem. Now to figure out how to best do the audio samples...

Taking Sides Between Frank J. And InstaPundit

As many of you may be aware, war has been declared between Frank J. of IMAO and InstaPundit. Frank feels spurned by the lack of a link in the InstaPundit blogroll, much less the fact that the good professor refused to link to him in stories for a while.

Being the whore mercenary that I am, I am offering myself on the market to InstaPundit. Frank doesn’t link to me or return e-mails, but at least he doesn’t call asking for money. While the professor has ignored me for some time now, he does teach at my most recent alma matter and was kind enough to link to me on a story a while back. That day alone brought in some 2,500 hits. I hear that he likes his puppy drinks shaken, not stirred, and will keep that in mind.

Of course, if the professor continues to ignore me as well, and Frank makes a good offer…

A Beta Test Of Sorts

As mentioned earlier in the week, I have been working to get a new site up and running. I now have the beta version of the site up, and since it is my site, I wanted to give everyone here a chance to shoot at it. Go here, give it a tour, and tell me what you think. Please send comments to me at blake at blakepowers dot net, and put "Site Comments" somewhere in the subject line so that nothing gets lost in the spam filters. This is the first real site design and coding work I have done in many a year, so be gentle. :) Thanks!

An New Blogroll Addition

Transterrestrial Musings has joined the blogroll over on the right. Rand Simberg is known for his columns on Fox, and his blog has a lot of good food for thought, especially on matters of space.

A story up today on the undercover sting at Johnson Space Center back in the 90s, and the alleged manufacturing of evidence and other malfeasance on the part of the FBI, is well worth a look.

Go on, check him out and enjoy.
