After getting back from the marathon drive, I had the pleasure of breakfast Monday morning with Contagion and Ktreva and their lovely children. It was a wonderful way to cap off the weekend, and -- again -- I hope we can repeat the event soon.

I am alive, just loads of work and four days of almost continuous driving that has resulted in some tales -- as soon as a certain tail unkinks and gets back to its normal furry glory. And feeling. Non-painful feeling.

My Favorite Tribute To Rob
There are many good posts up saying goodbye to Rob, aka Acidman. Several of those who knew him have put up well written posts: Denny, Eric, Joanie, and Velociman. The Evilicious Blonde put up a tribute that stands well too.
It truly hit me this morning, and I was so glad that Eric linked to what I think may well be the perfect tribute. It brought a smile to my face and had me trying not to laugh too loudly at work, and the thing is, I could swear I heard another laugh as well. It wouldn't surprise me, as I think it would tickle his fancy on many levels.

A Night On The Phone
Pity it couldn't be on the town in honor of Rob, but it has been good talking with friends and people who knew him. Well said was the comment made that Rob had a way of bringing people together. Sometimes it was in horror (OMG, what is he up to now), sometimes in anger (that SOB, rah rah rah rah growl), sometimes in sheer admiration (Damn, I wish I had said that).
Rob, you did it again. Thanks for bringing some of us together again after far too long. Peace be to you old grouch, and thanks.

A Giant Passes
I have just gotten the news via a call from a friend, that Acidman has died. Rob was a character, and I am very glad I had the chance to meet him a couple of years ago. Love him or hate him, he was a remarkable writer and a painfully honest man. What you saw was what you got. For me, I hope his end was peaceful and pain free, for he deserved that given the pain in his life.
You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Blog Happenings Of Note
First up, I urge everyone to get over to Basil's (not the fox) Blog and ask questions of photoblogger Jan Bussey of Cascade Exposures. This talented photographer is worried there will be no questions, so let's give her plenty to answer. Meantime, go check out the outstanding photography.
Second, get over to the PC Free Zone, which is celebrating the milestone of its 100,000 visit. Wild Thing truly is a wonderful lady, and I hope one day we can meet in person. If you don't visit her regularly, you should.
Third, blog meister (diva?) Harvey is celebrating three years of blogging. Go wish him well, and drop a fake memory of Harvey here.
Finally, go read this post by Bloodspite and do what you can to help.
There is more I want to do, but am under the weather, so will call it a day for now.

Letter To The Brass Linked By CBS
My previous entry A Letter To The Brass has been linked by the CBS News Blog. They somehow got the idea I was talking about the media in it, and that it was a mock letter to the brass. Hate to dissapoint them, but it was a real letter that I did send to several points of contact in Marine leadership. Of course, as I told them, if the shoe fits...

I'm Not Dead Yet...
Just haven't had time to do much posting. The day job bosses liked something I did, and have told me to run with it -- which is great except there is an unspoken expectation that I can make up for the project being delayed almost a full year. Add to that having to do all the regular duties at the same time, and I am a touch tired. The grass has not listened to me (Cnute had his ocean, I have my lawn) and is having to be mowed multiple times a week, plus am trying to lay in my garden and more.
More soon, including thoughts on single-author blogs and changes in the blogosphere, soon. That is, if the lawn doesn't get me...

It's Not That...
There is not a lot to blog about, just not a lot of time. Huge project at work calling for some long hours and a lot of effort. Lots to do at the Lair, both in terms of the lair itself and the yard. A few other things going on as well. So, just saying that things will continue to be sporadic, esp. if we keep getting storms like of late.
Open Letter To The Lawn: There is no need to take the warmth and rain as a challenge, much less an invitation to unbridled growth. If you will see fit not to grow four inches in less than five days, both the lawn mower and myself as its mover, would be most appreciative.

Should I?
Or shouldn't I?
The cyberstalker has returned yet again, that brave soul speaking truth to power and haunting my days and blog to bring misery and dismay upon all. *Cough* That courageous soul who has posted as John Young and used about every alias in the book except, of course, their real name. *choke* That person who implies, if not outright claims, to speak for NASA and to know all, reveal all. *wheeze* A person who just happens to spend time in or near Reston, KSC, Michoud...
Logic and civility long ago failed, for rational discourse (much less rationality) were beyond them. Taunting and mocking grew way too easy, and so lost appeal. Lately, I've just been ignoring them and filing abuse complaints with ISPs.
The kick is that their efforts to gain attention for themselves may have paid off. I have an ISP that is willing to turn over all information they have on this creature to law enforcement if I file a complaint about their campaign. I also happen to be aware that their antics have also come to 9th level attention elsewhere shall we say.
So, what to do. Should I file a legal complaint and strip away the mask? Should I work through or with an agency that might just have an iron in the fire on this? Or, should we all just ignore them and continue to pray for them?
Decisions, decisions...

Wolf Park Blogfest: The True Story
Yes, this is very late but I had to wait for law enforcement, various prosecutorial jurisdictions, and the settlement provided Lafayette Brewing before posting.
I knew it was going to be an interesting weekend for myself and for Wolf Park, but I had no idea just how interesting it would be. Friday evening should have tipped me off. It took dogged perseverance and the use of overhead resources to find out that some had come to town early and were descending upon a hapless local eatery for dinner. Wanting to meet people, I went down and found them. I should have known better.
First up, I saw Contagion, or Mr. Huggy as he might better be known. I don't know what happened in his childhood, but I have never met someone so needy about being hugged and touched in my life. Every time you turn around, he wants to hug and touch, or better yet have you hug and touch him. In the immortal words of Dax, Just Damn!
The lovely and charming Ktreva was next on my path, but that was not to be. I was immediately accosted by a dark-haired woman who hit me. And then hit me again on behalf of a woman I've never even met in person. BoBo blogger indeed, the name should be the BamKaPow blogger!
The fourth in that grouping was a tall and lovely lady who's delicious er, attributes were overshadowed by a sleek rump bearing not only ISO 9000 certification stamps, but a Detroit Automotive Premium Choice Quality sticker as well. The turbo-charged talk that poured fourth meant that it could only be the Quality Weenie.
Dinner ended quickly with Kvetra gutting the waitron for slow service, so we adjourned to my home before the cops could arrive. Despite detailed directions, they still managed to get lost, and it took a searchlight to steer them in. Contagion promptly demanded another hug and some Asti, and then they all cut loose. It was a circus of activity, which was augmented by the arrival of Tammi, T1G, BloodSpite and BloodSpouse. The carnage is beyond description, and thanks to Quality Weenie, my chandeliers will never be the same.
The next day saw us off to the Tippacanoe Battlefield and then to Wolf Park. At the Battlefield, we were joined by this strange guy who would beat on anything and everything with sticks. The lady with him promptly pulled out bright lights and a rubber hose and used them on me as she demanded to know things like the average rise and fall of wolves in the Bay of Fundy. It could only have been Bodhran and his better half.
It was an ominous foreshadowing of the tragedy to come that Harvey ran late, and made Smiling Dynamite late as well. They arrived, and promptly ran off with Tammi to talk; unfortunately, no one knew where they went and they did not answer yells or phone, so everyone left for the park but we did leave trails of breadcrumbs for them. It was even more ominous when Harvey arrived late at the park, stuffed from the crumbs.
We have agreed not to talk too much about things, both for reasons legal and out of respect for Smiling Dynamite. Yet, the picture here tells the tale, for Harvey -- Mr. Loves To Camp And The Outdoors -- fell behind once again, but at least was rated a tasty bread-stuffed dish.
Later, at the celebration wake, as Smiling Dynamite did a twist-and-shout of mourning on the table, this guy showed up, though Ifni alone knows why. How on Earth a nice guy like him came to want to hang with this group of reprobates is beyond me.
Everyone seems convinced that it was cold, and I just don't understand it. It was barely brisk that day.
In truth, it was great to meet old friends again, and to meet the wonderful and lovely BoBo and the delightful and lovely Quality Weenie. BloodSpite and BloodSpouse were strangers and now known, and it was fun to meet Wes and be interrogated by his better half. A true pleasure it was to answer her questions and explore possibilities. It was also good to meet Jerry, though I still think he was crazy to come join the group.
My thanks to all who participated, and I look forward to seeing many of you here again, and most especially out at the Park.

The Start Of Some Changes
I can't do all I would like, but I've started to re-do the blogroll a bit. Time, and the inability to reliably access MuNu, are slowing it down, but I am glad to have up a new list of those bloggers I have met.
Now, I have included Denny on here though the meeting was brief. In point of fact, he was grouchy, and may have run screaming like a girl when Eric began to sing... That's my story, and I may stick with it. Maybe not...
With a bit of luck, more changes soon. Many more, including design and some changes designed to promote more discourse. We will see. Meantime, I really do hope to have up my Howl on the Prowl wrap-up soon...

Howl On The Prowl: A Ru From The Lair
My hope is that everyone had a good time, and wasn't too cold despite the temperatures and wind. Of course, there was not enough time to do even half the things I would have liked for us to do, but those who braved it all got at least half of a tour, and the chance to see an interaction demo before the start of Howl Night.
As for me, it was good to meet people and to have some people over Friday night despite the lack of hospitality I was able to provide. It was good to feel the Lair filled with conversation, laughter, and music. And pretty good music it was too!
We were up late, up early, but I know that one group with a 13-15 hour drive is now safely on their way. Not sure about the others, am not about to call and risk waking any who did sleep in. Hence, the Ru rather than a full howl. Want to know what a Ru is? Well, you will just have to come back one day and let me tell you as it was one of the things I didn't get to cover/do yesterday.
My thanks to you all, and I hope it was fun and wonderful for you. It sure was for me. Thanks for taking part.

Howl On The Prowl Update 4(?)
Folks, there is still room and time for you to attend Howl On The Prowl 06 in beautiful Battle Ground and Lafayette, Indiana on 18 February. There are going to be some good people attending, and good blogs represented, so join on in the fun. You can show up at the door, so to speak, but to be assured of having a place at the dinner table that afternoon, I need to have your name by no later than noon on 10 February.
For those attending or thinking of attending, you need to keep the following in mind:
Dress
It is strongly recommended that you bring some layers and dress warm, as the unseasonably mild temperatures may go away. Wear comfortable clothing and clothing that you will not mind getting muddy, dirty, wet, or even damaged. No open-toed shoes, and I will have no sympathy for anyone wearing heels. We will laugh at you.
Keep in mind that that we could find ourselves getting put to work at Wolf Park by the Managing Director. This is the same person who put T1G to work when he visited, and has been known to co-opt tour groups on the odd occasion. So, keep all that in mind as you plan what you want to wear that day
Equally, I suggest you not wear leather, and that you have no dangly things on the clothes. Dangly things get caught in any number of things, which is not a good thing. I would also recommend that you not wear earrings, studs, or other visible piercings. Anything under clothes is, of course, okay.
This may seem a little overboard, but I am trying to make sure that every possible set of circumstances is covered. Far better safe than sorry.
Other
If you have stadium seats or pads, bring them. The stands are aluminium, and they will suck every bit of heat out of you. I have been out at Wolf Park outside all day in -40 wind chills, and the coldest I have ever been was the one time I tried sitting on the stands for part of Howl Night. If you don't have seats or pads, bring blankets. First, place several layers of blanket between you and the stands. Then, have another blanket (or two) to put over you as you will be sitting still. Folded up bath towels work well for seat padding too. Be creative.
There will be some hot tea and such available at the park during the afternoon. If you have a particular thing you want or like to drink, non-alcoholic, then please feel free to bring it. Alcohol is not allowed at Wolf Park, so be forewarned. There will be plenty of opportunities for that later...
Cameras are allowed and you are most welcome to take pictures. It is asked, however, that you not share or post pictures of anyone who has not given permission for their face to be shown. The wolves and similar critters have all signed blanket permission statements, so you can post them to your heart's content. Be sure to check out the photography seminars coming up, done by noted nature and wolf photographer Monty Sloan.
For those with children (of any age) both the dinner location and Lafayette Brewing are family friendly. The manager at LBC has assured me that kids are welcome in the downstairs area up until closing. I will also note for kids and those not wanting alcohol, that the rootbeer there is very good.
The gift shop will be available with a wide variety of merchandise. Books, jewelry, collectables, photographs, and more are there waiting for you...
Schedule
11-12: Walking tour and visit to the Tippacanoe Battlefield, with possible walks to Prophet's Rock and other sites.
12-12:45: Lunch on your own
1-5: Tour of Wolf Park
5-6:45: Dinner at a local establishment
7-9: Howl Night
Afterwards: More food and libations at Lafayette Brewing.
Since the park is being generous enough to let us in whilst closed, I have set the following prices for the tour/Howl Night combo:
0-5: Free
6-12: $5
13 and up: $10
Please have cash on the barrel head as I want the park to get all the money, and no percentage lost to credit card fees and such. Any additional donations you want to make will be most appreciated.
If anyone is interested in a special briefing and walking tour in Lafayette on Sunday, let me know.

I Want To Join The Bad Example Clan Because
Well, heck. I've always been a joiner, willing to submerge myself in the greater whole (sp?) as it is always easier to be a non-conformist in a larger group where one can conform. Since Ol' Brokeback is creating a whole new group... Yeah, pity about his back, heard that Smiling Dynamite broke it during, ah, the birthday celebration. Yeah, that's it. Don't know what else he flippin expected...
I don't meet the rules: I think new bloggers should not be encouraged, but rather used as navigation bouys and race track bumpers; this is a job, nothing more, nothing less; I have no sense of humor At All; I hunt down and flay those who tease, taunt, or ridicule me; and, my life is too serious for laughter.
So, any of the interrelated members of that family care to vouch for my lack of character?

A Roar From The Lair
First, some cowardly deficient (deficients?) threaten the deliciously naughty Blondage. Yes, I read and enjoy her, and she is on the list of blogs to be blogrolled as soon as I get the chance. She may get a NSFW rating, but her site is fun and enjoyable if you don't have a broomstick permanently placed where the sun don't shine.
Second, a company threatened Techography because it didn't like an opinion expressed there. Facts be damned, they didn't like it and they have a bankroll and Calimus and BloodSpite don't. So, in a power play equivalent of a grown man beating a toddler, they forced the article down.
I am not happy with either case.
For the first, there is little I personally can do. I can only hope that the authorities track those responsible down and deal with them to the fullest and harshest extent of the law. Those responsible deserve nothing less, and a whole lot more IMO.
For the second, well, the Internet is a wonderful place and caches exist in many sites and services. Yes, Techography complied with the order, but it was not hard to do a little digging and learn which post and which company. I thought of all manner of things to do, but then started truly thinking.
This action is not the mark of a successful company, nor of competent and effective leadership. All that time spent in venture capital and related workshops and presentations paid off, for this is in many ways the hallmark of a company with problems, from the top down.
Now, I am not going to name the company here -- go figure that out for yourself. I figure any group that insecure and that on the edge won't hesitate to go after any single blogger -- or to take vindictive action against Techography just for spite given the mindset shown. Now, I hope that one day soon they face a blogswarm like they never imagined in their worst nightmares, and that the EFF joins in and gets positively medieval on their sorry asses.
Meantime, I have made a note of the company and its leadership, not just the top but down as far as I can. I will never do business with them, and I will do everything in my power to prevent any employer, client, friend, acquaintance, or other from doing so. If they are already doing business with that entity, I will encourage them to cease immediately and with prejudice as the actions taken bespeak something to be avoided. Furthermore, I have noted the leadership, and I will not only not do business with them here, I will avoid any company that they found, work with, are employed by, etc. now and forever amen. If I have the opportunity, I will blackball them from any club, organization, job, honor, award, or other venue to which I have a say.
Don't like that? Too bad. I sure as hell don't like you or what you have done. Want to threaten me with a lawsuit? On what grounds? There is a lawyer I know, who practices before the Supreme Court, who will love to hear it. Don't like my analysis? Fine, it is my opinion, and I am entitled to post it and, even better, I will be glad to detail for the press and a jury why and how I came up with it. Threaten me and I will call in the world on you by using every contact I have literally around the world, and most especially in DC and New York. I will give you all the publicity you can handle.

Howl On The Prowl #3, Lodging
Just a quick update with some notes on lodging. There are three places I am suggesting, and I have stayed at two of them. The first is the The Union Club in the Purdue Memorial Union. Rooms are nice, it is on campus, and not too far from the end of the festivities. The second is the Lee's Inn on I-65. The rooms I have had were nice and in good condition, and it is easy to find. The other, the Super 8, is near the park and offers a Wolf Park discount. I can't vouch for them one way or another as I have never even been in the doors, but it is an option. The phone there is 765-567-7100, and it is off I-65 and exit 178.

Howl On The Prowl Update #2
Hear ye, Hear ye, Hear ye!
The Howl On The Prowl blogmeet is a go! On 18 February, a group of demented intrepid and intriguing bloggers are meeting in Lafayette for a day of fun. The highlight of the day will be a tour of Wolf Park in the afternoon and participation in Howl Night that night.
First, a teaser: For those who come, I am working on a special event for Saturday morning from 9-10:30. Nope, not going to talk about it here, it's a surprise.
The plan for the day is as follows:
11-12: Walking tour and visit to the Tippacanoe Battlefield, with possible walks to Prophet's Rock and other sites.
12-12:45: Lunch on your own
1-5: Tour of Wolf Park
5-6:45: Dinner at a local establishment
7-9: Howl Night
Afterwards: More food and libations at Lafayette Brewing.
Since the park is being generous enough to let us in whilst closed, I have set the following prices for the tour/Howl Night combo:
0-5: Free
6-12: $5
13 and up: $10
This is close to the normal combo ticket price, and includes a very small donation to the park. Any additional donations you care to make to them will be very much appreciated.
The Wolf Park gift shop will be available to us as well, and it is filled with books, pictures, mugs, jewelry, and more.
I have sent out an e-mail update to those who have indicated they are coming, so if you have not gotten it drop me a line so I can figure out where I goofed and get you on the list.
If you want to come, drop me a line so I can start including you on the updates and such. We will need a firm count a week ahead of time for the dinner reservation, so keep that in mind. You are welcome to decide to come after that, but you may have to do dinner on your own.

Wolf Fest 06?
The Howl On The Prowl?
Okay, so we do have a few interested. Before I proceed further, here are some options, and I want to see what real interest there may be.
First, I talked with the managing director out at Wolf Park, and she is willing to go along. Even though the park is closed right now (except for Howl Nights), we can do something one Saturday. We may also get drafted into doing work around the park, but you pays your money and you takes your chances. Whether we work or not, the fee (chosen by me, not the park) per person will be $10, which covers the tour, includes Howl Night that night, and a very small donation to the park. At least one staff member is willing to join in the fun, and we may be able to entice one or two more...
Second, unless we have ten or more show up, I will not try to block rooms at a hotel. I will be glad to recommend one near Wolf Park that offers a Wolf Park discount, or another nice hotel in Lafayette, but unless and until that will be it.
Third, if we really want to see the wolves at their most active, we should do this in February or very early March. So, which Saturday in February would work best for most people?
Fourth, for a quick dinner between the afternoon and the start of Howl Night, we have a couple of options. We could see if it might be possible to do hamburgers and brats out at Wolf Park, or we could go someplace to eat. What would you like to do?
Finally, I can also put in a reservation for post Howl Night at Lafayette Brewing. The food is good, the stout is great, and the rest of the brews are not bad. I don't think it will hold up to Fritz's, but it will do.
Okay, what say you?

Fritz Fest '06
One of the nicest things about being able to work at home on occasion is choosing how I will spend my breaks. Today, I've chosen to catch up a bit and post about the wonderful Fritz Fest '06. I want to thank yet again the inimitable That 1 Guy for pulling this together and being such a great host.
I met some new people, and did not get to spend nearly enough time with them. I met Richmond, the Freedom Folks, TalulaZephyr, Sarah, Leslie, and Ktreva. Hmmmmm. Yep, I am forgetting something, what is it? Oh, yes, I guess there were some guys there too so I should mention meeting Contagion and Og.
In all seriousness, the biggest disappointment of the day was in not being able to stay for a few additional hours to talk with all these fine people. I had been looking forward to talking more with Contagion, as we are both man enough to wear the kilt. After meeting his better half and the other lovely ladies, I am sore hurt not to have been able to spend more time with them too.
It was also a great time to catch up with old friends. I had a truly marvelous time at Tammi's beforehand, made all the better by the arrival Sunday morning of Teresa who presented Tammi with a truly wonderful gift. I have so been looking forward to saying that Tammi ordered me into her bed (pity she wasn't in it) and that I took a shower with two beautiful women (in the house). Later, I was reacquainted with TNT. Such wonderful and charming company. Oh, yeah, Blackfive, Grau, and Harvey were there too. I think. Don't look at me that way, I was distracted.
I did get the time to talk with the lovely and charming wife of Fritz, and even was given a tour of their kitchen. Big surprise at that, as I wanted to see where the delicious food came from, and enjoyed the talks with her. The looks I got from T1G were enough to keep the wolf at bay from one of the lovely daughters also present...
My regret is in not being able to spend more time with such a diverse and wonderful group of people. Maybe sometime soon... And maybe, just maybe, Contagion and I will get over the painful shyness we both have...
Before I leave, however, I want to thank Eric for being there in spirit, and keeping us in spirits. Thanks my brother!

Who Wants A Blogmeet?
While up in the frozen north in the warm and wonderful Fritz's, the Omnibus Driver began pushing the idea of a blogmeet in or near Lafayette, Indiana with Saturday Day and Evening to be spent touring Wolf Park and the late evening/night to be spent somewhere like Lafayette Brewing. Anyone interested, let me know and I will think, repeat THINK, about trying to set something like that up.

No Blog Sabbath Today
Not as normal at any rate. I will be updating my hurricane post/list and getting it up as soon as I can. I will also try to do a photo a la my normal post, but no promises.
Meantime, for a good blog sabbath moment I will tell a quick tale. I gave two tours at Wolf Park yesterday, and the second one featured a wonderful group from Australia. They, and the others in the tour, were interested and engaged, so we took a long time (about double the official tour time) on the tour. One of the young boys from Australia asked some very good questions. At the end of the tour, one of the younger boys, perhaps about six or so, came up and presented me with a tiny stuffed Koala bear that clips onto clothing with its legs (that also hold a eucalyptus leaf) and told me "thank you" and how much he/they had enjoyed the tour. After something like that, I could have been banned from the park for life, and my day still would have been made. Thank you, young man!

Welcome To Two New Blogs
A couple of people I know have started blogs. Please welcome Don't Tell me What I Can't Do and So Here Am I.... As always, no I don't agree with everything they say. I will even go so far as to say I think they suffer from BDS in politics. That said, however, differences can be the fun part of it and are, along with rational discourse, the key to the whole "Marketplace of Ideas." Go welcome these two to the marketplace.

Apologies Of Sorts
To all. I am several days behind on e-mail right now, and behind on posts as well. Things will get caught up, and soon I hope.
Right now, while the weather is good, I am trying to get as much yard work done as possible before winter sets in. Yesterday saw me come home from work, finish putting out the edging stone (and one pallet did not outline half the plans), use the spreader to get out granulated insecticide, and nail up clamps on the underside of the bottom of the deck railing to hold my blue rope lights. Today should, with luck, be weed-n-feed and the planting of about 50 bulbs -- will see. I have to get as much done before it rains, and before it gets too cold and such to plant and do.
More soon.

Weird Week Warning
Well, anything that has WWW for an acronym is going to be weird and interesting... I am working at home this morning waiting for the roofers to come, as -- you guessed it -- there was a leak in the new roof. First thing this morning means by noon, if at all, so I am working at home trying to get all the wonderful last minute things that have to be done for a major business trip and display done. While I am unamused with the contractor and his roofers, it was not as bad as I thought it might be. I would have been surprised (and very happy) had there been no leaks, but given the levels shown I am just happy not to have multiple major leaks...
Later come the joys of travel, the farce that is the TSA, and all such as that. I look forward to being in Baltimore and DC, but don't look forward to the trip at all.
More soon.

What Say You?
I've been doing Food For Thought Saturday since I started this blog. There are any number of reasons for continuing, but I would like to ask my readers -- all six of you -- what you think about it. So, what do you think? Should it continue? Should it go back more towards matters philosophical/spiritual with more Way of the Wolf posts? Should whatever be done continue to be on the lighter side of things? Or go more serious? Let me know your thoughts, and in perusing them I may be able to figure out my own thoughts a bit better. Yes, Things Have Been Lite
And may be so a bit longer. There is a small matter of trying to do the impossible for someone at work, said impossible going from zero to new display (which is actually four different displays), nine publications, and a presence at a major trade event in less than four weeks. There is the small matter of some of the work at the lair, which has included showing the door to a contractor who took almost three months to do what should have been less than a week's worth of work (long story), verifying that another contractor who told me I needed a new heat exchanger in my furnace (at almost the price of a brand new unit) was blowing smoke, and finally being able to truly start unpacking now that some long anticipated work is done. There is... Well, you get the picture.
The good news to share is that I can now highly recommend two companies in the area: Charles Wolf Plumbing and Electric (Flora, IN) and Advanced Tech Heating and Cooling. If all contractors did as these people do...
More maybe soon.

Thank You Joe Katzman
It seems like it has been forever. It seems like it was just yesterday.
Online news sources and communities were different then, and the rise of the Blog was just beginning. To be honest, while I knew the term and perused a couple, blogs and blogging really didn't register with me that much. The rough and ready forum of Baen's Bar was a favorite stop for news, discussion, and debate. And the occasional cyber bar fight.
All that changed one morning when a story broke on about some teachers behaving very badly towards children of soldiers. My first response was to call "Bull!" I figured it would take very little to show the story was bogus, so I set out to do some real journalism. What I found is something much worse than is accepted as conventional wisdom today. Among other things I found, thankfully, that I could never qualify as a "Real Journalist" again as when the families asked that the story be dropped (they had to live there with those people, and continuing could have made things bad and put the kids in a worse position), I dropped it.
I followed the story on my own, and didn't have client. I went to the Bar and started reporting what I was finding, and John Ringo told me there was someone I should meet. A sort time later, I was e-mailing with Joe Katzman, founder and original writer for Winds of Change. Almost immediately, I found myself a proud Citizen Journalist -- living up to what I had been taught journalism ought to be -- and posting at Winds.
Joe encouraged me, taught me about this brave new world that was starting to change the face of information and information warfare, and gave the occasional good swift kick when needed. I knew of his goals for Winds, and was and am proud to have been a part. I also knew that Winds was not the place for some of what I wrote, the little stuff, the day-to-day, the humor. So, with Joe's help, I started Laughing Wolf.
It was a lot of help. My last formal programming class was Fortran IV on punch cards, and it showed. Joe helped with coding, templates, anti-spam, and continued to encourage, kick, and do. I thought it only proper to do a couple of things as a result. First, Winds of Change went to a special place at the top of my blogroll. Second, I decided to do my own take on special Saturday posts. Joe had started doing "Good News Saturdays" as a way of helping promote thought and coverage of good news. It was a day of rest, of respite of the overwhelming and relentless onslaught of negative coverage in the Old Media and even the bad news covered in the blogs. My own take was "Food For Thought" so that I could cover a complementary but different range of topics.
All things, however, must come to an end. Change blows constantly around the world, even within the world of blogs. Most especially within a site devoted to covering and encouraging those winds. I have known what was coming, but a certain sense of denial has been there too. Yet, last Saturday, Joe told the world, and pulled the plug of Good News Saturdays and his current participation in Winds.
The changes in Joe's life are good, wonderful, and right and I want to wish him and his bride-to-be all the good things in life. May the light shine on them, on the new path they walk together, and fill their new life with health, happiness, joy, love, and prosperity.
Winds will grow, change, and continue. That is the way of things, and the way Joe envisioned and worked to make happen with what I will continue to think of as his blog. So will the blogosphere, as I am but one of many for whom Joe provided assistance and encouragement. Each one of us apparently decided to emulate that, so the ranks grow and become legion. Joe's legions.
Thank you so very much, my Blogfather. This does not begin to cover it all, but it is a start. Thank you, thank you for all you have done.
The cue here should be for a sunset, but that is not right. For what you ride off into right now is not a sunset, but the sunrise of a bright new day. A new road, the right road for the two of you. May our respective roads continue to meet and parallel.

Not A Lot Today
Tired, and things are very busy at work. Spent the weekend sanding floors, and getting very annoyed with myself as I managed to mess up the floors a bit in a previous effort. In short, I frelled them up. The good news is that I do have them to the point that someone who knows what they are doing can come in and fix things and refinish them -- without it costing an arm and a leg. Carpet gone. Nails (mostly) gone. Staples gone. Super staples gone. Still mad at myself, but have to admit I tried to do too much, too fast, with too little. It can and will be fixed, meantime I can live with it and furniture and such can hide the worst. Maybe more later.

Slow(er) For A Few Days
Things progress, but between something at work and work on the lair, things may be slow. I am trying to finish up some critical painting at the new lair tonight so that I can re-do this weekend the wood floors I found under some carpeting. Problem is that I have managed to do something to my right elbow such that I have some mobility issues. Not fun, but the lair is shaping up. I do hope that my friends will stage an intervention if I ever start to do painting that requires two or more processes to do... Yes, I got fancy on some of the wall and trim painting, and am paying for it in more than one way. I also now sport a nice long scratch down most of a forearm courtesy of OSHA and ill-thought safety "features" on lawnmowers. Had to spend Tuesday evening mowing the half acre or so of lawn instead of painting and prep...

Open Post Saturday
I've been doing my Food for Thought Saturday for more than two years now, and decided that today I would do something a bit different. I've never done an open post before, and decided that I wanted to give it a try so that you could comment or link to fun or thoughtful things that were of interest to you. If this works, it could become a regular feature on Saturdays, and perhaps even during the week as well. It will not replace the regular effort, but simply allow a way to augment it. So, keep in mind that this is a day for good news, philosophy, and perhaps pondering all the non-negative that gets such short shrift these days. With that caveat, have at it!

I've Been Tagged
Harumph. Army Wife Toddler Mom has hit me with a rather disgusting meme. I think I would rather have had to come up with something related to this instead. Ah, well, since Saturday is to be a lite day, I guess this qualifies:
Once upon a blog so dreary, I squandered weak and teary
Over yet one more curious meme of rotten gore
Came a sqwaking and a rapping, demanding entry to the chamberpot door
Only quickly, lest it be upon the floor
Silken feathers rustling against the purple curtain
Filled me with fantastic terror, as it launched across the floor
Over it flew, my heart beating hard, as it cleared the table and the bowl
Shamless brat for evermore
Deep into the bowl it plunged, from parrot flying
As I stood with horrored countenance and swore
Damned bird who shat, with aim deceiving
Your turd, my bird, in a punchbowl splats
With apologies to Mr. Poe,

A Wonderful Saturday
As mentioned before, Mr. Bad Example and Ms. Smiling Dynamite came to visit on Saturday despite the interesting weather. My worry was finding things for them to enjoy doing, but they seemed to like spending time out at Wolf Park a good bit. I also got them out to the Tippacanoe battlefield, to a surprise, toured around the Purdue campus (sort of), lunch at a Thai restaurant, and back out to the park. They also went home with a belated gift, that I hope was enjoyed. I still worry a bit, hoping that these two delightful people enjoyed the day as much as I did.

Anniversary And Change
Fairly close to this date two years ago, I began blogging. My blogfather, Joe Katzman, invited me to do some posts at Winds of Change on a number of topics, from the Maine Teacher Story/Scandal to the Media. I did so, and became hooked -- to the point that I opened this site. In the journalism world, the opportunity to write thought and opinion pieces is very limited. It came at a time when I could devote the resources to doing long and thoughtful pieces, and I still enjoy that and hope to have the time again soon,.
Meanwhile, life has changed much over these last two years. I have a job that prevents me from blogging during the day and between work and the start of a real life, my ability to write and post as I would like is limited. I expect things to change even more, though I hope to have a very pleasant blog surprise soon. Until then, however, my posting will be lite and perhaps even missed on a day or two. We will all just have to wait and see.
For now, I am going to be taking some time for myself. Getting to play culture vulture this weekend was a delight, and I want more. I have some friends who would like me to come up to Chicago for at least one weekend a month, and I want to do so. I have some other friends that want me to head other places, from Highland Games to some pub and restaurant crawls in various exotic locations here in the not-so-frozen North. There are some various other bits that may result in some good news to share along the way, nor is the blog the only thing to perhaps go short. I am also going to be cutting back on my time at Wolf Park, so that I can do these other things. These are all good things, for they will help bring more balance to my life.
But for now, I want to say the following:
For all of you who have read me for the last two years, thank you. You and your adherence to rational discourse have made it all worthwhile. Without you, this site could not and would not exist.
For those disappointed in the lack of posting, as well as for my regular readers, hang in there. I do have plans and look forward to getting back to doing more posts. The changes in my life should, with time and luck, help this.
For all of those who have given support, time, and encouragement -- thank you. This especially goes out to Blogfather Joe, for getting me hooked and started.
To all of you I have had the chance to meet in person, all I can say is "Wow" and that it has been a pleasure! I look forward to meeting more of you, and to getting to know some of the ones I have met much better.
Thank you all. It is not nearly enough, but it is all I can do and I say it from the bottom of my heart.
