A Letter To Hilton's chairman and ceo

crossposted at Blackfive

I have just finished my letter to Hilton's chairman and ceo, and thought I would share it with all of you.

Mr. Stephen F. Bollenbach Chairman and CEO Hilton Hotels Corporation 9336 Civic Center Drive Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Sir,

Enclosed are the remains of my Hilton honors card, and notice of termination of my account (#redacted).

My cancellation comes as a result of the treatment of Fran O'Brien's at the Capital Hilton, and the callous disregard shown them and the disabled veterans whom they treat as family. Indeed, having read the latest spin campaign (http://getonthe.blogspot.com/2006/04/giving-credit-where-credit-is-due.html) wherein Matt Hard and Marc Grossman engage in the - to be polite - disingenuous smear of failure to pay rent, it is clear that honor is only word for the Hilton Corporation. Such disgusting and despicable tactics, sadly, are hardly surprising at this point given a response that has ranged from feeble to a general manager who greeted the wounded veterans for the first time only when the cameras were rolling and the heat was on.

Know that I plan to give my business to any competitor rather than stay in any Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn and/or Suites, Embassy Suites, Doubletree, Conrad, or other property owned or controlled by the Hilton Corporation. Know also that I am encouraging my employer, clients, family, friends, business colleagues, and any others I can influence to do the same.

Even were you to intercede and do what is right at the last minute, I would have no faith or confidence that such an action would be real, or would hold, given the abhorrent behavior shown to date.

If they don't like the language, they do not want to hear how I am phrasing it where I am not trying to behave for polite company...

My card did make a nice bit of statuary though...

Go Soldier's Angels! Go Project VALOR-IT!

It is true that I have spent a large portion of time around the boys in blue, no, not the Post Office but the others using the same uniform, the Air Force. It is true that a lot of my ROTC time was with AFROTC. Yet, not all my time is there and the little certificate upstairs for ROTC and training says Army. Besides, one should never trust a smiling Blackfive, for the camera is loaded with infrared film I do not want shared, so...

I have joined the Army Team for Project VALOR-IT. What is it, you say?

Project Valour-IT
(Voice-Activated Laptops for OUR Injured Troops)
In memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations at major military medical centers.  Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the 'Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse. The experience of CPT Charles "Chuck" Ziegenfuss, a partner in the project who suffered hand wounds while serving in Iraq, illustrates how important this voice-controlled software can be to a wounded servicemember's recovery. (text stolen from Blackfive, why work when great is there)

I am going to add to this post as time goes by, and it will stay at the top until the 11th, so please help.

This Is The Way To Celebrate Veteran's Day

Just take a look at the post at the top and cheer. This is so much better, more meaningful, than any memorizing of In Flanders Fields and such.

We went over the top yesterday and are moving towards some serious overachievment. I don't want just serious, I want ridiculous. I want completely absurd. So, get to it. Click that button and make a donation if you have not already done so. Let's give our wounded a way to communicate, and to rehabilitate.

At the risk of being treasonous, I am even going to point out a couple of other options to you. Courtesy of T1G I found out that Holly Aho is running a kissing and tattoo booth to raise money. You know, I may just have to go for that as I think she is not just a great lady, but a cute one too. FWIIW Holly, I might just have bought an autographed picture of you...

Or, you can go here and star in your very own Day-By-Day strip. The talented and wonderful Chris Muir is pitching in too.

So why aren't you?

Remember what this guy said and advance! For the real winners of all this are our wounded, and for them we can do no less than our best.

VALOR-IT: An Address

Be seated.

Now, I want you to know that no bastard ever won a competition by sitting on their butt. They won it by getting off their butt and getting others to do so as well.

All this stuff you've heard about America not supporting its troops, especially the wounded troops, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love those who fight. All real Americans love the sting of competing to help them. When you were kids, you all admired the champions in various competitions, and there are no greater champions than our wounded soldiers. Americans love a winner, and will not tolerate a loser.

That is why the Army team will not lose this important competition. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for anyone who laughs at this and does not do their part. The very thought of losing is hateful to us, and to all Americans.

Now the Army is a team, and we are raising money as a team for our wounded. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bilious bastards who write that it is about them know as much about helping the wounded and raising money as they do about fornicating. The Army team has the finest writers, the best blogs, and the best people in the world. You know, by God, I actually pity those poor fools on the other teams. We are going to leave them in the dust, raise our goal, and keep on raising money so that every wounded soldier who needs VALOR-IT from any service has it. We are going to use their blogs to grease the skids to raise even more money than they ever dreamed of.

Now, some of you are wondering if you will chicken out under the stress of competition. Don't worry about it. Wade into this, spill their ink, and get their readers as well as your own to donate to the Army team. When you put your hands into the goo left behind by the Navy team (they don't call them pukes for nothing), well, you will know what to do.

Now, there is one other thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any comments that our team is holding its own. Leave that for the Marines. We're not holding on to anything, let the Air Force do that. We are advancing constantly, and we are only interested in raising more money than all the others combined. We are going to hold them by the nose and kick their collective asses. We are going to go through them like crap through a goose.

Now, there's one thing that you will be able to say when this is all done, and you may thank God for it. When your grandchildren ask you what you did for the troops, you will not have to say that "I shoveled shit for the enemy." You will be able to proudly state that you helped our wounded, because you gave in the great campaign for VALOR-IT.

All right now you sons of bitches, you know how I feel. I am proud to be beside you in this, and to help with this effort.

That's all.

Hurricane Katrina: Flood Aid - Help Today

Today is the day to dig deep folks. My charity of choice is Soldier's Angels Operation Katrina Soldiers Relief Fund. That said, there are two other very worthy charities that could use your help: Mennonite Disaster Service which goes in and helps individual families clean up and rebuild, and the Humane Society which is going in and helping both the pets left behind, and the care givers to animals of all types.

I am re-posting all of yesterday's post, with a caveat. While Val is threatening to post no more until a good amount is raised, I want to go the other way. There are trolls and similar ilk who have asked, demanded, or harassed me to shut up. To all of them, I say now is your chance. For each paid pledge of $1,000.00 to any of the above named charities, I will not blog for one week. Dead Air. An image saying thank you for your generosity. The attention you crave, the silence you want, and good coming from it. Now is the time to put up, and I will shut up.

*****
Hugh Hewitt gave the call, Instapundit set the date, and N. Z. Bear is tracking.

Taking my cue from the offer Val is making, I will be offering some signed, numbered photographic prints. Send me some form of receipt and a mail address and I will send you:

for donations of $20.00

for donations of $50.00

for donations of $100.00

I will do this for as long as the prints last.

There are lots of lists, but one of the first and best is done by Lee Ann, and Baldilocks has a great one too.

Tomorrow is the day. Do what you can, both to give and to help spread the word.

Project Valor IT: Helping The Wounded

Imagine for a moment that you are somehow injured and not able to able to write, answer e-mail, and more. Your ability to let friends and family far away know how you are doing, how things are going, is extremely limited. A voice-operated computer would be ideal, wouldn't it?

That is precisely what Soldiers' Angels is doing. They are working to get computers with voice software to our wounded soldiers so they can stay in touch, answer mail, and do more.

Go help this effort. Every bit helps. If you claim to support the troops, now is the time to prove it.

Volunteer Week: The Final Tally

It has been longer than planned, but I wanted to give a final tally to the Volunteer Week activities, noting that the previous tally was a bit short.

First, I want to say that the Bad Example family rocks! They led the way and combined, outdid everyone else. Jim at Parkway Rest Stop did yeoman's service with his very kind donation. All together, $245.00 was raised to benefit the Volunteer Bureau and Wolf Park. I would like to thank the following blogs/bloggers for their kindness and generosity:

Bad Example

Letters From New York City
Parkway Rest Stop

I haven't been out to Wolf Park this week to see what may have come in, but as of right now I have $110.00 in hand and another $66 on the way. The $66 comes from Jim, and I am going to have to send him some shortbread for going by the hour. A non-blogger kicked in $20 cash, and my thanks to him, too. Will check to see if any checks came in out at the Park, and if they have I will update. Meantime, my thanks to all who made donations and helped publicize this effort. Aiding The Good

As pointed out in this post, we each have a choice about doing things to make the world a better place. One of the most important is to give of ourselves.

Yes, we all lead hectic lives, and time is precious. Yet, each of us can find an hour here or there to make a difference. You can volunteer as a subject matter expert for Scouting to help advance the mental growth of boys and girls. You can volunteer with any number of other youth programs as well. Many states have soldier's homes where simply a visit, a smile, and a thank you can make an incredible difference. Nursing homes also need people to come in and simply sit with someone, to talk, to listen, to smile. Animal shelters need people to scoop poop, make repairs, and do other things. Schools often need people to come talk on career day or as subject-matter experts on things from arts to sciences.

There are so many things you can do to make a positive difference in the world. Some take less than an hour, and some can become a lifetime of reward. What they all take, is you.

Sponsor Me Or The Gnome Gets It!

Right in the jewels. Okay, I posted on Monday 4 April about my taking part in National Volunteer Week and no one came forward with a pledge. Not a comment, not an e-mail, nothing. Okay, you had your chance and blew it. Start coughing up, or the blogmeet gnome has an "accident."

I am taking part in "Pledge To Inspire," otherwise known as National Volunteer Week, and am seeking pledges and sponsors. Since I am doing it for Wolf Park and it is near Lafayette, the sponsoring organization is the Greater Lafayette Volunteer Bureau. Wolf Park you know of from here. GLVB takes parts in many efforts throughout the year, including working to match elderly and/or disabled individuals with volunteer assistance, helping local agencies fulfill their donation and volunteer needs, and doing the Leaders of Tomorrow program.

The process is simple, and relatively painless (for all but the gnome, that is). You can make a flat pledge ($5, $10, $20, etc.) and send a check for that amount made out to "Greater Lafayette Volunteer Bureau." Or, if you feel generous and lucky, you can pledge an amount based on the number of hours I volunteer the week of 10-16 April, with a check again made out to "Greater Lafayette Volunteer Bureau" to be sent once the number of hours is known. The choice is yours.

As an added incentive, if someone cares to make a donation that is in excess of all the other contributions combined, they get the gnome to do with as they will. Grau, are you listening? Of course, if no one makes any contributions...

Pledge To Inspire

National Volunteer Week is fast approaching, and the theme is "Pledge To Inspire." Your host will be taking part, and would like to challenge you to take part as well by sponsoring. You can either pledge a flat rate, or you can make it dependent upon the number of hours I volunteer during the week of 10-16 April. Because I am doing this for Wolf Park, I will be taking part through the Greater Lafayette Volunteer Bureau and all pledges will be split between the two organizations. So, please open up your hearts and wallets, and make a pledge today!

What Have You Done ?

Da Goddess made a very good point in this post and in this follow up for all the people who missed the point.

What have you done to help people elsewhere? The ones you, both left and right, use as points and pawns.

Have you ever donated time, money, or other things to Spirit of America so as to bring school supplies, clothing, library books, sporting goods, and more to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan?

Have you ever donated time, money, or other things to Operation Give to help children in need? Not just in Iraq and Afghanistan, but to the victims of the tsunami throughout Asia?

Have you ever donated shoes or other needed supplies to Operation Shoe Fly so as to bring shoes, boots, blankets and other supplies to the people of Afghanistan?

Have you ever donated to Strengthen The Good to help people around the world?

Did you help the people of Beslan?

Did you go to any of those places to rebuild, provide medical assistance, or other tangible and useful help to them?

Did you do anything other than mouth off?

Deeds, not words, are the measure of any Man be they male or female. Deeds, not screams and screeds, will change the world for the better.

If you have helped, good. If not, shut up and act to do some real good in the world. Otherwise, all you do is contribute to the bad and evil, and as such you part and parcel of the problem and are not a part of the solution.

Thank You N.Z. Bear & Blogads

Yes, that is a very special Blogad over there on the right. It was created by N.Z. Bear, who spent time not only developing the ad but in helping clueless bloggers like myself get it up on our sites. It links not to one charity, but to a good list of charities involved with tsunami relief. I want to thank Mr. Bear and Blogads - who are donating the ads/adspace - for doing this, and for giving people the opportunity to take part. It is nice that individuals and companies can choose where and how to do it, rather than have some petty bureaucrat steal our money and choose how to spend it (and how much to skim).

Mr. Bear also has a very good idea for true long-term help: buy from those countries. He's got a list, adding to it, and if you really want to help them get back on their feet, build a good economy, etc., then buying from them is a good way to do it.

I also love his New Year's Resolution.

BTW, take the time to go thank N.Z. Bear for all he does, from this to the Ecosystem. He gives a heck of a lot to the blogosphere, and the least we can do is thank him for all his efforts.

Last Wishes, And Making One Come True

I have no wish to be morbid during this season, but a number of things – including this post – have conspired to continue a train of thought dealing with such subjects. This morning, I want to explore it a bit further because sometimes one of the best gifts you can give those around you is clear direction.

For the most part, I’ve already done that for those friends who are my executors. To be honest, I’ve had a will and funeral plans since I was about 14-years-old. The will was mandated by my parents, because of inheritance laws and the fact I owned property at the time. The funeral plans were just something we had always discussed, not in dread but in matter-of-fact terms. One of the first words I learned in this life was “cemetery”, a fact used against my Mom with deliberate humor on more than one occasion. In her defense, she was, among many accomplishments, a genealogist and one on the hunt for some information. The net result was that we stopped at many country cemeteries looking for graves for a decade or so.

One result of this was that for many years I had no fear or bad feelings towards them. I did eventually get some of the normal childhood fears, but they were thankfully short lived. To me, they are simply places with some being beautiful and some leaving a lot to be desired. The older I get, the less it concerns me where the rotting meat that once was my home lies. Indeed, because of things I’ve done I rather suspected that I might end up with a cenotaph rather than a tomb, and that fact no longer bothers me. The tomb is not the home and I will not be there, so…

When I was young, I had lots of last wishes and like most they mostly were about taking it with me. Favorite stuffed animals, food (gee, big surprise), Roman coins, and more came during that phase. Today, other than a humorous request to sprinkle my ashes over a nudist colony filled with good looking women, I have none. Do what is needed to make those left behind happy or easier about things.

Yet, a soldier had one that we need to honor, for it is not about him. It is about making a point to those left behind. It is a way to bring comfort in so doing. It is a way to remember both the individual and all those who die so that we can be free.

Go here and read the magnificent post by Blackfive. Then, call, visit, and e-mail – all three – all the local stations you can. Don’t just go country, do it to all. I’ve heard so many stations and shows pay lip service to supporting our troops; now, they have a chance to put words into something tangible. Find out how serious they are, or if they are just blowing smoke, and make this happen. Bear in mind who blows smoke, and who does not, and let it shape your actions. First, though, let your actions be to let them know of this and that you will be listening and sharing.

Let us honor this request, the soldier and family behind it, and keep in mind that freedom is never free.

Doing Good

I have written before about the need to do good, but do it constructively. More than ever, I think the lessons there must be considered, for fate is placing a lot of need our way.

The weather alone is doing damage, from ravaging the Caribbean to devastation in Florida and elsewhere. We have unique opportunities to help fight an important part of the war by giving to Operation Give and Operation ShoeFly among others. We can directly help our troops in a variety of ways, from Hook-A-Thon to Soldier’s Angels to Adopt A Sniper to Beer For Soldiers. We can help those in need here in the U.S. by giving to organizations ranging from the Mennonite Disaster Services to Strengthen The Good.

Also, look into helping individual bloggers. If you know of good jobs, contact Tammi, DaGoddess, or Kathy. Heck, I’m under employed and could use some work too. If you can make a donation, DaGoddess, The Delightful Ith, and Kathy would all appreciate a hit to their tip jars. To be honest, there are a lot more out there who need help, some who have no Amazon button and some who do. Choose wisely and do what you can.

For we can all do a good bit. I know someone who is in desperate straights, having been screwed over royally on paychecks and told flat out that they will not get the money they are owed. Too bad, so sad. Yet, this person still has given to those in need, and continues to do so. What are you willing to do? Can you live up to the challenge this person places before us all?

Choosing wisely is the heart of today’s food for thought: Think about what you can do, and do it wisely. It is not enough to donate to something that says it will do good, for what you must do is take the time to find out how much goes where, and where that where really is. Are you helping those in need? Or, just perpetuating a bad situation and making it worse. Can you live without fancy coffee for a week to help those in need? Choose wisely. Go back, read the post, and think.

Then do. And do what is right and best for everyone, including yourself.

Don’t just give a hand-out, for that is a cheap cop-out. Give a hand-up. Do some real good in the world. We will all be the better for it.

Helping Those In Need

Storms are raging, earthquakes rocking Japan, and terrorists strike. There is a lot of bad and evil in the world, and it can be easy to get overwhelmed. One way to avoid that, to do something to help fight back, is to do good. There are many ways to to it. You can go over to the menu on the right and scroll down to my Good Works section and click on any banner there. Or, you can go here and do what you can for the people of Beslan. I also urge you to go to Strengthen The Good to find some good ways to help all those in need no matter where they may be. They will be added to my Good Works section as soon as I get an icon for them. Or, take part in some way in your local community. Whatever you choose, do something for the good.

Hook-A-Thon 04

Okay folks, you have a chance to show your appreciation to some of our men and women in uniform in a very tangible way. Get over to Hook-A-Thon and take part, so these people and their families can have have a GREAT reunion when they return home from the Stan.

Operation Give/Atlas Update

Well, since I am here local, I followed-up on yesterday's post and called Atlas. I think they are less than happy with the calls and attention. The lady who answered demanded I hold, and then the lady who then came on was very aggressive and even beligerent. According to her, this is all Operation Give's fault and I was asked if I supported a group that was more interested in giving to those who did not want their gifts and was perfectly willing to hurt people here. Not an exact quote, but pretty darned close. When I challenged her on this, she denied that she was trying to blame Operation Give for the problems, but she also suggested strongly that I investigate what they were posting and saying. While I gave my name, and we had to play some games because she demanded to know my position with Operation Give (and I reiterated several times I had none), she never gave hers. I am far less than impressed with them, and the behavior they showed says it all.

Oh, yes. When I thanked the anonymous lady for giving me my next column, she hung up on me.

Soldier’s Angels Needs Help Too

I’ve seen this at several sites, so want to join in urging you to visit Soldier’s Angels and do something for our wounded at Landstuhl. There are some other things you can do there as well, so pitch in and help out.

Operation Shoe Fly

Now has its own site so get on over there and help out. Kudos again go to Sgt. Hook who has put this together while serving in the Stan, and to all those who have joined in to make this what it is. Now, let's all do what we can to make it even more successful.
