Author, blogger, and journalist Steven Vincent has been murdered in Iraq. I don't have time to do this justice, but it is clear that there are a couple of cesspits that need cleaning.

Two Posts You Need To Read

Then follow the links on this story on post-election Iraqi politics and on this post on Uzbekistan. The two are related, if you think and follow the links. I agree with my Blogfather on the political theatre to come, though I think that the media will not freak nearly as much as they will have hysterics followed by the vapors. Lest we all end up surprised, pay close attention to the second story. Heck, you really need to read every one of the posts over there, but start with these two.

What Wonderful News

To wake up to this morning. Go to Mudville Gazette for a great round up, or go to Buzz Machine, or go to Chrenkoff or even Instapundit and take a look. Most of all, be sure to click the links so you can see what the people of Iraq have to say.

I am in awe of them, just as I was of the Afghan people when they voted. So many here can't be bothered, and these people faced death to go vote. Literally faced it, not just having some faux trauma be seared, seared I say, upon their brains. They stood up to the murderous thugs who would pull them down, and voted. I am so glad that so many gave the finger (see photos) to the thugs. Congratulations. You start a long road, but it will be one of your choosing. Good luck with it.

Good News For The Day II

An election is being held in Iraq; indeed, around the world the people of Iraq are voting in the first real election that may have ever been seen there. Far from the unanimous re-election of Saddam, this is a political brawl in some ways that is seeing choices undreamt of before. If you don't think this is a good thing, then go listen to what is being said by individuals in Iraq:

Friends of Democracy-Iraq Election News
Iraq The Model
Free Iraqi
Hammorabi

Also check out IEDs-Iraq Election Diatribes and maybe IraqPundit will resume posting.

Read what they have to say, follow their blogrolls to other Iraqi's, and listen. Also, take a moment to thank them, for they risk much to do what we oft take for granted. They are targets for daring to speak freely, to lead, and to grow. They would be even before irresponsible parties abroad try to tar them with unsubstantiated charges of working for the CIA and other organizations. The courage they show is a wonder, and at the very least deserves our sincere and profound thanks. All you risk is a small part of your day. Think about what they risk every hour of every day.

Elections in the face of a determined evil assault. It that is not good news to think about this day, then I don't know what is.

Mosul

Inspired by Tammi:

Light of Light
Shine forth on those to battle called
Shine forth on those from battle called
Enfold them in your love
And welcome them home

Light of Light
Shine forth on those to battle called
Shine forth on those who wounded lie
In bed, on gurney, on bunk, on ground
Guide their path, warm their hearts
And heal them whole from harm

Light of Light
Shine forth on those to battle called
Shine forth on those who serve by wait
Light their paths, guide their way
Send your warmth and love
To augment that of those called away

Light of Light
Shine forth on those to battle called
Stand with them as their shield
Stand with them near and far
In whatever form serves them best

Words fail at times like this, and naught can do justice to the thoughts I have or for what has been done. To that end, for those rough and willing to walk those dark places of world and soul, I offer the following thought:

Light of Light
Shine forth on those to battle called
By Mithras, Mars, and other form
Let those who would destroy us
And did this cowardly thing
Get all that they deserve
In Spades, In Eagles
In Eagle, Globe and Anchor

Cox and Forkum sum things up beautifully with "Watch Your Six". Blackfive and Hook say it far better than I can. What bothers me the most about this is that the reporter apparently gave the tape to Al-J and Al-Reuters -- one or both of which are anti-American progaganda outlets -- before he gave it to anyone else including the military. In other words, he was more interested in glory and headlines for him, and giving aid to the enemy, than justice for anyone. He also did so knowing that it would place Americans and American troops in harms way. This was not a breathless crusade to see justice done, but a grab for glory with other people paying a blood price.

Where's The Boom?

There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom! And I bet that is what a lot of people in the Old Media and the DNC wanted with the story yesterday of the missing explosives. The cries were immediate and loud about how Bush screwed up yet again, the massive danger we were all in because of the less than one percent of conventional explosives in Iraq that are missing. But, wait! As it turns out, the explosives were not there from the start, a fact confirmed by the Old Media itself.

I expect a lot more lies, distortions, and attempts to influence the election from all sides, particularly the radical extreme. Nor is that limited to here -- I expect as many attacks as possible to be launched in Iraq and even in Afghanistan. I still expect an attack here before or on election day, but hope to be proven wrong.

Short version is, check any story out thoroughly, no matter how good it is or how much you want it to be true.

Religion Of Beheading Murders Second American?

There are reports coming out that the second American kidnap victim/hostage has been killed. This is not confirmed, but does have some credibility. The terrorists set an impossible demand, and have carried through with the sham. May the light shine on this man and his family, and the families of the other murder victim and the remaining hostage. May we also track down the people responsible and remove them permanently from this Earth, along with all who support them. Them or us, people, them or us. I echo Stacy and say, "Scorched Earth." Religion Of Beheading, Yet Another

Go here. The interesting thing here is the demand for release of women prisoners, of which there are only two: and they were both involved with bio weapons research. Gee, wonder why terrorists and outside fighters would want them released. This story does have a local angle for me, in that one of the remaining hostages is from near the temporary lair. My thoughts go out to them and all the families, and especially to those left behind by the brutal murder -- not execution -- of Mr. Armstrong. May the light shine on them all.

Just a thought to share: anytime, anywhere, if a group tries to take you hostage, seize a plane, etc., remember that no matter what you are probably going to die. The only choice left is how.

An Early Transfer Of Power

In a move designed to thwart terrorists on several levels, the CPA this morning turned over power to the new interim Iraqi government. The new government is being sworn in, Paul Bremer has left Iraq, and there are reports the new government will indict Saddam this week. This is a most interesting development, and one to be watched.

LW

UPDATE: The more I am watching this, the more I am thinking that it may be yet another master stroke. GW has a habit of confounding his enemies, and it is clear that this move has confounded his enemies, foreign and domestic, and confounded the enemies of the new Iraq, both foreign and domestic. This has turned a lot of NATO and EU politics on its head, given Tony Blair a boost, and stands to do more. It is interesting to watch/listen to the reaction, some of which is "but he did what we asked him to do, THATS NOT FAIR!" It will be fun to watch the medium- to long-term results as well.

On that note, I want to extend all good wishes to the new Government of Iraq and most of all to the Iraqi people. The road ahead may not be easy, but what happens now is up to you. May the light shine on you, guide you, and may the gift of Freedom be yours and your children's in the years ahead. May the gift of peace follow, and the blessings of prosperity as well.

The Wave Of Coordinated Attacks

Are not a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. The enemy, who are not resistance but terrorists, are scared spitless of a free and prosperous Iraq. They will do anything, and I do mean anything, to prevent such. The current round is both heartbreaking and cause for optimism. If this is the grand punch, a week or so from the handover, it indicates more than a bit of weakness. It also reeks of desperation and fear. Keep in mind that many behind this are from outside Iraq, including most or all of the top leadership. Of the few Iraqi's known to be involved, most were in Sodomite's service. Just some thoughts to keep in mind as the Old Media plays shill for the terrorists and paints as bleak a picture as possible.

Well, well, well. Guess what has turned up in Iraq? Interesting, as – of course – everyone knows that Saddam had no WMD at all. Of course he didn’t, he used harsh words and night wind on the Kurds. Feh. I am very surprised that these have not turned up sooner, but am not surprised that they are turning up now. Fighting In Fallujah

The Marines have been attacked yet again and have called in air support to help deal with some of it. From reports, they appear to be dealing with the situation, unlike the politicians.

There is a very real danger of winning the battle and loosing the war here. The message being sent is that the old playbook is back: endless negotiations, unrealistic restraints on the military, and cut and run. The failure of the CPA and the government to deal with this situation is encouraging other so-called insurgents elsewhere to do the same thing; to go for hostages; to entrench and fortify so that rooting them out will be bloody and expensive.

Mr. President, Mr. Bremmer: Quit letting your people muck around. It is making the situation much worse, and ultimately much more expensive to the country. There are many reports (go search Cardinal Puppilieu as just one place to start) of clear problems with the CPA, and Fallujah may well be the prime example. Fix the problem, and let the Marines fix the situation in Fallujah before it gets beyond redemption.

Rough, But No Surprise In Middle East

The so-called “insurgents” are back to old tricks this morning after finding out that it does not pay to take on the Marines. Coordinated car bombs went off in Iraq targeting police stations. Another car bomb has detonated in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia targeting – apparently – the (a?) general security building. None of this is unexpected, though you might not get that from some of the Old Media coverage. A Danish businessman who was kidnapped has been murdered by his captors and his body found. I would also note that appeasement did not help the Spanish, Dominican, and Honduran military as their base was hit by mortar fire last night. On Fox this morning, at least, there was coverage of the Iranian connection to all of this, and some discussion of oil for food scandal and a hint of oil for terrorism. Stay tuned, things may happen fast over there in the next few days.

A Celebratory Breakfast

I realized that I haven't posted a recipe in a while, so thought I would share my breakfast this morning. In delight at the news, I have changed my plans for the day a bit. I did cook up the oatmeal that is a Sunday staple, but hit it with a good dollop of homemade vanilla as well as the normal cinnamon. Instead of an egg flipped over easy, I did two eggs scrambled. A tablespoon of heavy cream, chives, dill, a few grains of chipotle, and a splash of sparkling wine went into the mix.

Yes, I did say sparkling wine. No product of a treacherous and ungrateful nation today. Which sparkling wine? Not telling. Out of the Coalition of the Willing, there are several with fair to great sparkling wines, among them Australia, Spain, the U.S., and even Poland. Go check them out, remembering that not all products of any of the countries rate fair to good. :) This one was, though.

Whisked nicely, and then added in some red lumpfish fish eggs. Not really fair to call them caviar in some respects, but good. Cooked up nice and fluffy, and served with a dollop of sour cream topped with yet more eggs. Put cream on the oatmeal, serve with a glass of sparkling wine, and a good start to the day. A slice of homemade holiday/fruit cake is toasting now to finish out the repast.

I am going to wait on a couple of major posts, in part because I want to see how certain groups handle this issue. I also want to see how some of this gets spun in terms of negative – hard to see how, but I bet that within the hour that someone has found a way if they haven’t already. Know some are in disarray, as on the Old Media I have already heard someone speculate about how France really feels about this, since Saddam can spill the beans on the extent of their collusion. It will be interesting.

Also, if you have not already done so, get over to Winds of Change. My Blogfather, Joe Katzman, has the latest installment up on a story that you will not find in the Old Media. This one is important, and deserves our full attention.

Will go for now, the toaster has dinged. Time to clog the arteries and frell the blood sugar good for the day. :)

Iraq: Signs of Desperation

The recent events in Iraq show a clear sign of desperation on the part of the leadership. Frantic efforts are being made to halt the spread of a malignant entity into the body politic there, to restore order, and to deal with the inevitable slide into the unthinkable. The ill-considered and haphazard actions clearly show the fear that has gripped the leadership, as more things are rushed into play without proper consideration.

The Desperation Shows

The increase in number and type of attacks comes as no surprise to anyone who has been studying the situation. From SDB to the pages of Winds of Change, it was discussed and it only means one thing: the opposition is on the ropes.

Hitting them hard, taking out leadership, and generally showing them that they are finished is bringing out last-gasp desperation. They are counting on trouble to drive the Coalition of the Willing out, as it has worked elsewhere before. They are hoping that all the inconvenience will make the population rise up. I hope they are right.

Jordanian Embassy Bombed

The Jordanian embassy in Baghdad has been bombed, and a crowd of protesters stormed the embassy right afterwards and did some damage before police and soldiers drove them out. In a separate incident, there was another attack on a humvee and it is reported that two soldiers are dead.

The Media appears to be playing this for all it is worth, with quagmire being the word of the day, along with it being the end of the "truce" or "peace" that had been in place since just after the two thugs died.

The attack on the humvee is not at all unexpected. What is interesting is the bombing of the embassy, both for its power and relative sophistication and for its choice of target. There is a lot more here than meets the eye. Stay tuned.

Of course, none of it can exist since we did not find it in the first three weeks.

Matt, my mentor and boss at 801 Franklin, is a bit different in many respects. Instead of music and such, we listen to talk radio as we work.
