Saturday Wine Notes

Being posted on a Friday, no less. I wanted to post some quick notes on Frei Brothers Dry Creek Valley 2002 Merlot. I had this with dinner yesterday and was quite pleased with it. The nose is quite nice and full, with old leather, bramble, dark fruit filling and hints of spice up high. The mouthfeel is full as well, with old leather, and chocolate forming a core, dark cherries with wild berries high and on the sides, and a nice finish filled with spice. Not recommended for computers, just for drinking.

Sunday Wine Notes

My recent trip to Austria introduced me to a new variety of wine, Gruner Veltliner. It appears to be sort of the flagship wine of Austria, and shows a nice range of flavors and styles. It is a white, fairly dry wine, that goes well with a number of meals. It is dry enough that it can be used to cut through heavy flavors or even sweet in the mouth, yet is not so dry that it goes towards pucker factor. The flavors can range from floral to citrus to fruit and you will even find touches of sweet notes. Even the low-ends are well worth a try.

Wine Notes

Since I am not getting to the free wine tastings at Pauli’s anymore, the ability to do regular notes has been curtailed. That said, however, my cousins and I recently went to the Habersham Winery where I found some very pleasant surprises.

Saturday Wine Notes: Double Feature

Okay, I got busy with packing and work, and never posted last week’s notes. So, today I will post those and this Saturday’s notes as well. Be warned, this may be the last until after the move, but we shall see what can be done. Since I am leaving, if you want to have some fun and try some wine, get thee out to Pauli's on Saturday afternoons and take part. Without further ado, here they are:

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

Once again, Pauli’s provided an interesting afternoon with a selection of five wines. While a bit higher than normal in price, the tasting was enjoyable and provided a view of some smaller and interesting estates.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

Yesterday’s wine tasting at Pauli’s was a delight. My favorite wine pusher was there and he usually brings a treat or treats along with information on the wines for me. He did not let me down. When Spain is mentioned, there is an automatic assumption that the wines will be red, yet that country produces some very good white wines as well, such as those from the Rueda region (Old Castile-Leon). I have had one such before (Basa) and yesterday got to try two new ones.

How To Taste Wine

I decided on a more literal food for though item for today: how to taste wine. The notes I post most Sundays are my interpretations, and some have asked how to do a proper wine tasting. So, I thought I would share my thoughts on the matter.

I was very fortunate to do a number of very educational tastings at The Wine Bank in San Diego a few years ago. At those tastings one can learn how to taste, what to look for, and try a variety of interesting wines. To truly appreciate the whole, consider the components

Saturday Wine Notes

Okay, okay, okay. I know I am late with this, but I did not feel it appropriate to post anything else on Sunday or Monday. Yesterday I got tied up, and not in a fun way, so it is coming out today. I will skip the normal stuff, and get straight to what went down at Pauli’s.

Saturday Wine Notes

One of the most frequent questions that any wine person gets asked is, What wine should I serve with XXXX? A frequent disappointment are wines touted as being developed to complement XXXX.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

The Saturday afternoon wine tasting at Pauli’s was fun, as always, even though nothing jumped out at me as a “have to take home” wine. The selection yesterday featured Peter Lehman wines from Australia.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

Ah, it is good to be better and good to be here for the Saturday wine tasting at Pauli’s. Yesterday was a treat, both because it was the first one since the surgery and because of two of the wines.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

Well, when you have so many fine wine tastings, like the outstanding South African tasting a couple of weeks ago, it is easy to get spoiled. So, it is not surprising that I ended up a little disappointed yesterday. The wine tasting consisted of five unrelated wines, and I regret to say I found them all to be unremarkable.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

Saturday’s means a wine tasting at Pauli’s, and a fun time for all. If you have not tried this, you really should. Six wines seems to be the new standard, and these were a mish-mash of things that the staff thought would be of interest.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Kim duToit Day

I decided to dedicate today’s notes to Kim because he is now on his way to Chile, an excellent wine production region, and is from South Africa, which was the focus of yesterday’s tasting. South Africa right now is about where Australia was 20 years ago in terms of wine production and entry into the American wine market. I think it will take South Africa far less time to penetrate the market, as they are providing a range of good wines at very good prices and Americans are growing increasingly sophisticated about good wine.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

After a couple of weeks absence, I made it back yesterday to Pauli’s for the free afternoon wine tasting. This week’s was a real treat on several fronts, including the fact that it showcased six wines instead of the usual four.

No Wine Notes Today

There were some other things I had to do yesterday, including rest up a bit from being somewhat under the weather earlier this week. So, no notes today but stay tuned.

A Few Of My Favorite Things

The good Doctor Galen asked me the other day to list some of my favorite wines, which threw me for a bit of a loop. At first, I was tempted to say that I had no real favorites, but that is not quite true and leads to the real reason for hesitation: the scope of the answer.

Sunday Wine Tasting Notes

Yesterday at Pauli’s, the tasting focused on French wines, and while I will not buy French products, I have no problem with simply tasting them. The snackage of the day included fois gras and some different cheeses. I meant to buy more Drunken Goat cheese, but forgot. Will just have to do it next week.

Saturday Wine Tasting Notes

On Saturday afternoon, Pauli’s on University Drive/Highway 72 holds a free wine tasting. Always fun, usually very enjoyable, and a great way to learn about wine and sample some delicious nibbles. Yesterday, we tried five wines and I was very surprised and pleased with the Chardonnay. Still a little more oak than I would like, but full of buttery fruit as well and far more complex than usual.

Wine Tasting Notes

Every Saturday, there is a good wine tasting held a Pauli’s here in the great Huntsville/Madison metroplex of North Alabama, and yesterday’s was a particular delight. Not only were there two good wines, but I found out that Pauli’s had Drunken Goat Cheese, a favorite of mine that before was only obtainable in Nashville or Atlanta. A quick set of notes on the wine is as follows:

Saturday Wine Tasting

Okay, no notes this week as I am having Palm problems. If you live anywhere near Huntsville, Alabama, there are several wine tastings around, but the free Saturday tasting at Pauli’s is always quite good. This week, as a thank you to the regulars, they did champagnes and caviar.

Now, I don’t buy french anymore, but there are a number of excellent sparkling wines out there that will give any champagne a run for its money. I did drink the french offered on Saturday and enjoyed it very much, but would urge you to try American, Australian, and even Spanish sparklings this year. As for the caviar, I really have got to win the lottery as I love good caviar and can’t afford it. As it was, I will say the Beluga they had was quite good, but the new type I tried and loved was paddlefish. It was nutty and complex, compares quite well with Oestra and similar, and is much more reasonably priced.

The free wine tasting at Pauli’s yesterday focused on Rabbit Ridge wineries, and proved to be quite interesting. There were five wines being sampled, and one of them proved to be very surprising. The notes are as follows:

Wine Tasting

This week’s tasting at Pauli’s was focused on South Africa, and was quite fun. In an unusual move, the tasting started with a dry cider that was a refreshing change of pace. Savanna dry premium cider has a nice yellow colour, a dry crisp nose rich with fruit: pear and apple predominating. The taste is mellow, a medium full body with a slight tartness followed by apple, pear, and a hint of honey. It has a nice finish as well. Not too sweet, and refreshing on a hot summer day.
