It Will Be Alright

You know, I do believe it. I believe that blue tinged former elder god. It will be alright. Thank you, Joss Whedon. Thank you cast and crew of Angel, for five years great writing, production, acting, and stories of good and evil. Of light versus dark, of moral clarity rather than moral equivalence. Thank you for stories that show that it is not the appearance, but the substance. Of taking that which is different and showing that different need not be bad or evil, and for sometimes standing things on their heads to do so. Thank you for real diversity with real honesty, and for emphasizing again and again what tolerance really means: it means accepting that which is good, even when it makes you uncomfortable; and, it means fighting that which is truly evil by thought, word, and deed, with life, fortune, and sacred honor. Thank you for a show that made me think, even as I laughed, cried, and cheered. Thank you for the lie, that was not a lie. Thank you most of all for a great ending that is just a beginning. Thank you all for such a wonderful run. Of course, I must admit I expected no less.

To the suits at WB: frell you and frell your advertisers.

A Tribute To Two Editors

A writer is only as good as they are made to be. All the talent in the world, without guidance, will come to naught and be lost amidst the sea of words that fill this world. That guidance comes, at least at the start, from outside: from editors.

In many respects, the first editors each of us faces in life are our teachers. They are the ones who teach us the rules of grammar, who place the dread red marks upon the papers and prose we submit to them. They guide us, and if they are true teachers, encourage us to express ourselves and do it well. For those that carry their writing further in life, editors take over this role and can make, or break, that career in words.

A Canadian Calls For Russian Aid

This story is a must read for anyone going to Russia, and is a delightful read for anyone who has been there. It makes some good points, and can make your sides hurt with others. Having been charged by a wild babushka, I can appreciate some of his experiences. Thanks Tim, for giving me the heads up!

Letting Go A Client

I had to do a very hard thing yesterday. I had to inform a client that I was no longer interested in working for them. This is never easy, and I feel a bit bad because part of the problem was that I misread something they had put up in regards payments.

The client was a space encyclopedia, and the job should have actually been quite easy. The pay was not good, but it was a job and would give me some more current clips. One difficulty in finding myself doing full-time freelancing again was that I did not have any current non-NASA clips to show, so this seemed to be an easy way to get some quickly.

The problem was, that I misread the pay scale. I agreed to do several entries, believing that I would get some cash and a copy or two of the encyclopedia. What I got yesterday was a notice saying that the payment would be “Full credit for the Entry in the Work and one copy of the encyclopedia.” Oh, and a discount on a second copy if I so wanted it.

I’m sorry, but I have been a professional writer for more than 20 years and have all the credit (and debt) I can handle. No cash, and despite what was posted not even two full copies of the encyclopedia. Of course, I may have misread that too… No professional writer should ever work just for the clips, there should always be money.

So, I have walked away. Not an easy choice in that this will burn some bridges, but it is the right choice to make. Now to go find some work that will pay…

Shoe Was Right

In the march of progress, there are always stubborn pockets of athletes foot. In today’s freelance market, there are scores of publications that refuse to join the electronic age. This in and of itself may not be bad, after all there are all those paper related industries to support, a post awful to confuse, filing cabinet makers to support, and landfills begging to be clogged.
